Why Facebook Needs a Phone

Facebook as the dominant social network is becoming the replacement for the phone. Nowadays in fact it is fairly common to use Facebook as the primary way to stay in touch with others – especially among those under 30. The point here is that the phone is becoming the Facebook communicator.

And with mobile adoption continuing ta a blistering pace – many people have multiple mobile devices in fact, Facebook should be sitting pretty, right?

Yahoo Kills off Livestand

It took six months but Yahoo! decided its Livestand newsreader will no longer be offered. Apparently the competition from Google Currents, Zite and Flipboard was too much.

I mentioned this past December that the Livestand user interface was clunky and I suppose this is what did the product in. That of course and being late to the party and seeing superior competition from Google - whose interface is better.

Think about it though - Yahoo has virtually infinite marketing real estate avaialble to it and could have made this product a success. Perhaps they decided its new Axis browser is more strategic and a better place to focus on.

Interestingly I just checked out the Yahoo blog post on the matter and they confirmed my suspicions.





Yahoo Reinvents Mobile Browser with Axis

Yahoo has taken the mobile browser and improved it dramatically by integrating search and allowing users to view results rapidly without the need to open page after page. While Google allows similar functionality on a desktop what Yahoo! has done here is put the results of browsing up top where they should be. And with the simple swipe of a finger a user can scroll through pages after page to see the site they are looking for.

If you take the best parts of Google Instant and the now defunct visual SearchMe bowser and put them together with some added features you get Yahoo’s Axis.

TV to GO: Cablevision Customers Access TV Beyond the Home

Cable companies having come together to share their WiFi networks in order to compete somewhat with 3G and 4G networks are also looking at another competitive threats such as OTT video such as YouTube, Hulu, Netflix and any other alternative way consumers can get access to video content.

Yesterday, Cablevision started to promote via an email their TV to GO service which allows customers to watch TV outside their home – as long as they have the Cablevision Optimum Online user name and password.

I have been fortunate enough in my career to do something I love – cover technology and be involved in all the most innovative happenings from the early eighties until today. Tech is one of the markets which experiences constant change, moreover, the ability to learn something new presents itself virtually every day. Whether you are a system administrator, programmer, database designer or microprocessor designer you are not only in demand, you are able to constantly do new and innovative things in the course of your work.

Of course some jobs are better than others and if you do not keep up you may find your skills become obsolete. Furthermore, not every moment of a techie’s life is exciting but what has been constant for three decades is techies are in demand, treated well and given numerous opportunities for advancement.

Is Yahoo Just Doomed?

Years back I was at a conference with a consultant who worked at Yahoo! and told them they need to take on Google more directly and he was told, “That is not the Yahoo way.” I still remember the dumfounded feeling I had when I heard this ridiculous comment. We all know that Yahoo is a company with outstanding assets but with major internal problems. CEOs seem to be ousted annually, the company is behind in just about every market it invented and even with all its traffic, it seems to be all about yesterday’s Internet.

There are lots of stories about the company’s incompetence – one past high-level exec detailed the situation at a TMC conference (at the person’s request I won’t share more detail) and his explanation of the corporate politics remind me more of a sitcom than a company looking to win.

Politics are nothing new… Every company has them. Egos are fragile things and people want to amass more power.



GM to Facebook: Your ads Don't Work

When you are about to have one of the largest public offerings in the world - north of $100 billion and much of the reason for the size of your IPO has to do with advertising revenue, there is nothing worse than having one of the world's largest and most sophisticated advertisers telling you your ads don't work. And that is exactly what just happened to Facebook when GM pulled the plug on a $10 million dollar ad deal.

To put this in perspective, GM is the third largest advertiser in the US and its budget is absolutely huge. Last year in fact it was  $1.8B. The interesting part of the situation is that even though GM won't be continuing its ad spend this year it plans on continuing to spend $30M or so for Facebook content.

What this tells us is Facebook is just becoming a driver of the Splinternet or another Internet which advertisers and developers need to take into account.
