ListAndPlay: Music Videos Done Right

October 27, 2010

A while back I outlined my idea of dream TV and talked about how the merger of music selection algorithms and video clips could bring us television which is customized by content genres as opposed to today’s system of having to watch a channel at a time. Let’s say you are an avid Yankees fan – every clip mentioning the Yankees will eventually be queued up for you to watch. The stream could include clips from the Home Shopping Network, local news, ESPN, etc.

Anana Enables Social Networking Dial-Tone

October 25, 2010

It was only a matter of time – social networking has permeated so many aspects of our lives that almost one-in-five divorces cite Facebook as part of the reason for the split! Moreover, in some countries a single text message is legal grounds for divorce. But wait, how did I get on this tangent? This was supposed to be a happy story about how social networking has integrated with telephone service like never before, enabling carriers to generate revenue by tapping into one of the most popular phenomenons on the planet.

What if Someone is Trying to Steal This Data?

October 25, 2010

Google apologized for inadvertently collecting passwords, phone numbers, emails and other personal information with its street view cars. My question is what if they or worse – a malicious party is actually trying to get their hands on this data? Since we know Google has scanned WiFi networks all over the world, wouldn’t it be nice if they could let the owners of unsafe WiFi networks know that their unencrypted, personal information is floating around the airwaves for anyone to tap into?

TV End Game has Google Written All Over It

October 22, 2010

After a whirlwind tour of SATCON and Content & Communications World which took place last week, 4G World and Interop which took place this week and over a hundred meetings, I find myself ruminating over numerous discussions about where things are headed – in terms of content, technology, entertainment and apps.

There are macro trends which are intersecting and diverging and as much as I would like to say I have 100% clarity about it all, I don’t – but I do believe I have enough observations to share in order to get investors and innovators thinking about what the future will look like.

Over the last 30 years the rise of cable and then satellite radio shows consumers will pay money for content and in many cases for the ability to reduce the amount of commercials they consume.

But this idea is under attack from yet another trend emerging over the last few years.

Facebook, Microsoft Kinect and Yahoo News of Note

October 18, 2010

Here are some stories worth reading on TMCnet today:

Jaclyn Allard explains Microsoft has a $500M ad budget for Xbox Kinect and in my opinion this is one of the best new products I have seen in many years and creates a new paradigm (yes, I used the P word, what's wrong with that? ) in human interaction with a computer and it has the potential to be more important that gestures used on smartphones today. Cameras aimed at users translate movements of hands and body into computer input - no wireless controller needed. Very cool.

Ashok Bindra reports that Gartner believes information will be the oil of the 21st century - a resource running the economy.

TMC Robotics News Becomes Robotics Wire

October 18, 2010

TMC's robotics coverage has just evolved with a new look and name. We've been covering the space for many years but now this coverage area has become Robotics Wire and can be found at roboticswire.com.

Robotics technology is evolving and while not quite mainstream (except perhaps for vacuum cleaners) the technology is making a difference for the disabled, military and many industrial and manufacturing applications. Thought Leaders Descend Upon ITEXPO

October 2, 2010

Kind of a silly term- "thought leader" but in every market there are people involved in setting the conversation... Those whose thoughts and ideas permeate the web and industry conversations. "Did you hear what so and so said? Can you believe he thinks this company sells junk products and won't be around in a year?"

Well you get the idea.

It turns out a number of the people in the market who I have personally followed for some time have joined forces on a blog called Voyces.

ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide Available

October 1, 2010

The ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide is here and if you are flying to the show - you may want to download it to your Kindle/laptop/iPad/netbook/smartphone or print it. I am on the plane now and we have the equivalent of a 300 baud modem's worth of bandwidth so I can't download it but as I recall it is over 100 pages and gives you a solid overview of the dozen conferences taking place next week.

In addition it shows you the exhibit hall with over 200 exhibitors and which sections correspond to which technology.

I have this dream that I will have enough time to go through the directory and point to some of the interesting highlights in a blog post.

We'll see how that works out.

Here is the PDF and it is fairly compressed down to 5 Megs as I recall - we may be getting a higher res one soon as well in case you have the bandwidth.

Sleeping Spouses Rejoice: TV Ads get Quieter

October 1, 2010

Federal government intrusion into the lives of its citizens has gotten pretty bad these past ten years and it seems we lose rights and more privacy each month. I'll be on an airplane later today and the whole removing shoes, laptops and belts routine is not something I'm looking forward to.

Having said that, I am happy that politicians have decided to deal with commercials which are much louder than other programming. I think it is absolutely crazy that we are still fumbling for remote controls late at night to lower the volume of a screeching ads. Actually it is interesting that TV sets haven't dealt with the problem on their own. Jacqui Cheng has more.
