I recently wrote about Nortels

I recently wrote about Nortels outlook on the communications space and how they mentioned the US is falling behind in both technology and in the move towards VoIP. To further elaborate on my column titled Nortel Networks' Bright Future in Internet Telephony Magazine, there is a great article in the Wall Street Journal titled China Expands Phone Service Via The Internet (paid subscription required. There seems to be no easy way to link to the article. You need to do a search on past articles at http://www.wsj.com) discussing Chinas jump to VoIP as well as an article in the New York Times titled Losing Our Edge? It was technology that allowed us to overcome the tremendous outflows of manufacturing jobs over the past decades. We have without a doubt been the worlds technology powerhouse. The question becomes, what happens in the future? Can we continue to be the place that the world looks to for innovation? We may still have the entrepreneurial lead in terms of our culture as well as a market where many people with good ideas can get access to capital. These are areas which we do still excel in. So the future may not be as murky as some may suggest. Still, we need to do everything we can to encourage better education of future generations in science and engineering if we want to continue our lead. If there is one thing we have learned it is, you cant take anything for granted in life Success, technological superiority, standard of living, nothing. Lets hope that our politicians realize what is at stake and make sure to improve our educational system quickly before the technology lead momentum tilts too heavily towards other countries.
