Free HBO Content Makes the AT&T Pipe Smart

April 5, 2017

For years, communications service providers like AT&T and Verizon discussed their need to to not be dumb pipe sellers but instead add value with various services. It turns out one of the major ways to add value to a dumb pipe is with content - lots of it. Comcast owns NBC and Universal, Verizon owns Yahoo! and AOL and AT&T owns DirectTV.

Thanks to T-Mobile and Sprint, there is real price competition in the wireless space and differentiating can be more difficult. Tremendous credit goes to to T-Mobile for immediately offering Pokemon Go with no data charges - soon enough to capitalize on the trendy new game.

Amazingly, carriers are more nimble than they've ever been.

ITEXPO Attendee Cap'n Crunch Needs Your Help

April 4, 2017

I first met John Draper or Cap'n Crunch at ITEXPO in Los Angeles as he was looking to connect with Asterisk Creator and Digium founder Mark Spencer. I still remember how mystified people at the conference were when they learned this gentleman's nickname was a breakfast cereal. In case you don't know the story, John blew the whistle that came in the box of Captain Crunch cereal into a phone and was able to subsequently hack into the AT&T Central Office.

He became the first hacker by accident.

Draper also knew Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, a past ITEXPO keynoter.

The Cap'n now needs our help. He has a major medical situation.

Communications Transformation is Just Beginning

April 4, 2017

The technological journey to a more efficient enterprise never ends. There are endless new tools which a company can adopt to become more productive. "Digital Transformation" is the latest buzzword to describe what has been happening in companies since the advent of Lotus 123 on an IBM PC which allowed companies to instantly get access to what-if scenarios impossible to duplicate with a pencil.

Transformation never ends.

In 1978, using metal to print newspapers and magazines was commonplace.

A young Rich Tehrani received this metal type from the New York Times as a gift and its its helped him remember that change is constant and adaptation is a necessity for survival.

This is one of the last metal-based newspapers they were printing as they were going to start using computers. At the time, the cost to automate was astronomical - you needed a mainframe and custom software and proprietary interconnections.

Devialet, 4,500 Watts of the Cleanest Power You Will Hear

April 4, 2017

In my former life as an amateur audiophile I would have been salivating over the Devialet line of speakers and amplifiers. But that was a long time ago. Then again, when I got a chance to hear these speakers, I did salivate and if you have extra thousands of dollars lying around, you will likely not find a better sounding speaker, anywhere. Truly amazing.

Technology has revolutionized audio - not since vacuum tube powered components have we seen such an improvement in audio quality.

Stop the Shrinkage with Digital Transformation

April 4, 2017

Digital Transformation reaches across all areas of your organization - from business process to communications. In fact, we would argue it starts with communications. In retail however, shrinkage - the colloqialized term for theft is a major problem. How major?

Sennheiser Shows the Future of Work in NYC

April 3, 2017

Sennheiser
and furniture company Wilkhahn recently held a press conference at their pop-up store in Greenwich Village, NY where the audience was treated to great content and the ability to try some of the company's high-end audio products.

The presentation started with pictures which showed the evolution of the office - from tightly packed desks, to offices, to cubes and now more casual informal settings replete with couches, huddle rooms and a few quiet areas for serious work. In other words, our collaborative future.

The takeaway? Well, it wasn't all that different from what many of us heard in the keynote room of ITEXPO in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Companies are changing to suit the tastes of millennials.

If you look at the innovations of the iPad over the years, the device has gotten significantly more powerful as well as lighter with each iteration. Shock! IBM Reverses Telecommuting Policy. Here's Why

March 21, 2017

It's mind-boggling. It's incredible. The biggest news in tech culture is without question  the reversal by IBM regarding a telecommuting policy which will affect thousands of people.

This is staggering because IBM was actually famous for letting and even pushing people to work from home. I've been at the company's headquarters and asked management about how they do it - over a decade ago, before the trend was common and they told me they have a set of technologies and management procedures to ensure it works well.

10 Seismic Communications Trends Creating Billions in New Value

March 20, 2017

People need not apply in our brave new communications future

Communications was once a person-to-person mechanism allowing individuals to collaborate or share information with others. The move from traditional phone networks to VoIP, from wired to wireless, from voice to chat all involved two or more people at the ends of conversations.

The next wave however will represent the largest shift in our lifetimes - the most important communications innovations in the next decade will transcend people.
