Sorry Apple, This is Really Samsung's Month

September 19, 2014

I find if you write about Android or Apple, you are often a target for people who will flame you on social media for being pro-Samsung/Google or Apple. Actually I am not pro-anyone... I use Android, iOS and Windows 8 - often all within the same hour.

Having said that, many people in my office are iPhone users and it seems a casual survey of them shows almost all have decided to take the plunge and buy the iPhone 6 Plus which is likely one of the tallest phones you will find with any frequency. Its 6.2 inches tall in fact!

It's funny really, many people who have ordered it are actually scared that the phone is too big.

Larry Ellison Was a Real Trailblazer

September 18, 2014

Today, Larry Ellison announced he will step down as Oracle CEO, handing over the reins to co-presidents Mark Hurd and Safra Catz, who will now report directly to the board. In the late eighties/early nineties I was a database programmer here at TMC and had to decide between Oracle and Informix – two of the more popular relational databases at the time. I made the decision to go with Informix because Oracle was in the middle of an SEC investigation relating to how the reported forward earnings.

At the time, companies were far more siloed… A database company was a database company.

GENBAND Kandy Goes Public at Ruby Skye

September 17, 2014

Last night, GENBAND hosted a gala premiere at Ruby Skye in San Francisco for its official Kandy launch - the transitional solution from the communications hardware company which positions them as a seller of cloud-solutions. The point of the event was two-fold... Establish the brand Kandy into the minds of attendees who consisted of the media, analysts, customers and partners and also to show off the partner ecosystem which is beginning to flourish.

The company seemed to nail it on both parts - the extravagant event was not inexpensive and it was choreographed perfectly. Many attendees told me they couldn't believe the investment.

Important ITEXPO Content so far

August 13, 2014

We are fortunate that some of the Content Boost team at TMC came to ITEXPO in order to generate the stories and news you need to keep up to date with the market and show. I hope you find the following articles useful and more importantly helpful for what you do.

BTW, the Content Boost team is utilized by many companies in the tech space - we are the back-end of their social media, white papers etc. We even write many stories which you read as contributed stories on other industry sites!

It's not just tech companies though, we work with organizations of all types. Once again, here is a sampling of what they do...

HumansFirst ColdSmoke Lets You Buy with your Smartphone

August 7, 2014

While speech-technology has come a long way, we still haven’t entered the world of Star Trek reruns where the computer can do truly useful things through voice interactions. A big step in the right direction comes from a new app from N.L.P. LLP called HER. Yes, Siri works well for many things but if you tell it you want to buy an iPad Mini with Retina Display, it tells you to check out Apple.com which isn’t the best mobile experience if you want to buy something quickly.

The PBX Squeeze and How You'll Benefit

July 3, 2014

The following diagram is borrowed from the substantial cranial database of TMC partner in WebRTC Expo and UC University, Phil Edholm who was a major tech driver at Nortel and Avaya for decades. It was modified a bit by me.

The state of the PBX market can be summed up by this chart showing existing vendors getting squeezed between Microsoft coming from the OS down, Cisco coming from the router out and cloud and open-source coming from the bottom up in terms of pricing. In short, it is a tough time to be a PBX vendor.

What's the Future of SIP Trunking, IoT, Cloud and WebRTC?

July 2, 2014

Gary Audin shares his insights on the future of technology

Does the cloud have challenges you should be aware of? Is IoT the future? If so, how should carriers react? Weill WebRTC change how companies communicate internally?

On Aereo, Supreme Court Needs to Get with the Cloud

July 2, 2014

There are some good thoughts from Carl Ford on the Supreme Court Aereo ruling which says the company cannot transmit content freely received over public airwaves over the internet while also providing a DVR service and charging customers. Carl argues that the Supreme Court lost track of the public good regarding this case but I would argue that that is not the job of the court. Instead, I would make the point that if I were to come to your house and install a digital TV antenna, DVR and Slingbox I would effectively be giving you what Aereo does. If I were to charge monthly for the equipment, would this not be providing the same service Aero does?

Everything We Know About Disruption is Wrong

June 18, 2014

People in the tech space generally accept the Innovator's Dilemma written by Clayton M. Christensen as fact - companies need to either disrupt or be disrupted. Jill Lepore writing for the New Yorker Magazine questions much of what is "accepted wisdom" or as Al Gore might call it, "settled science" in a well-researched and written piece debunking much of what techies have believed for decades.

Lepore's argument is that the book uses handpicked case studies which aren't necesarily cut and dry in terms of their outcomes. Moreover, the innovators aren't always more successful than the incumbents as you can see from this passage below:

In fact, Seagate Technology was not felled by disruption.

AudioCodes: A Solid WebRTC Money-Making Story

June 17, 2014

Alan Percy had a challenge... The Senior Director of Marketing at AudioCodes saw the promise of WebRTC three years ago... And he saw how disruptive it could be for his company which provides communications equipment for enterprises and communications service providers. He approached his engineers and told them they need to start thinking seriously about this new standard.
