Spikko Brings Multiple Numbers and Recording to Mobile Phones

October 9, 2017

While there are a number of companies who can add phone numbers to mobile phones via VoIP, Spikko takes a different approach. The company allows a mobile device to have a single SIM and multiple local numbers with global call-recording added as one of its optional services. The company supports most countries but there are around 50 primary ones.

I spoke with company representative Ron Barak about the company's differentiators and he mentioned that they have their data center in the Amazon cloud in Ireland and from there they allow phones to work as local devices on multiple networks. They have negotiated great rates for customers - 2-3 cents per minute per call, $10/month for call recording and $5-$6 per number.

AdaptiveMobile: CSOs Flying Blind if They Can't Monitor Mobile Networks

October 8, 2017

SS7 is the signaling protocol for the world’s telecom networks and like the internet, it wasn’t really designed with security in mind. The assumption back in the day was the telecom operators were all trusted nodes on the network. It turns out over time, hackers have figured out how to penetrate the carrier network the way they have just about all others.

Bad actors can send spoofed SMS messages, track a user’s location or intercept messages used to authenticate a user as well as their phone calls.

Aculab Impresses with Cloud and Applianx AP Gateway

September 30, 2017

Aculab Milton Keynes, UK Headquarters

Aculab has been an innovator in the telecoms space for decades and most recently they've impressed us with their cloud offering as well as their Applianx AP Gateway. The company was early to cloud - perhaps one of the first in the telecom space to embrace it. Even before the big Silicon Valley companies all vying to be the CPaaS leader.

The company's cloud can do voice, messaging, multilingual TTS, voice biometrics and fax. What makes it frankly better than some of the clouds which are run by IT and not telecom people is their deep and somewhat extensive knowledge of telecom signaling and telephony protocols.

Streann OTT Hopes to be the Evolution of TV

September 23, 2017

"The revolution and evolution of the golden age of entertainment is happening right now," according to Giovanni Punzo the CEO of Streann Media. The company touts itself as the multiscreen next-generation monetization platform for delivering linear TV, VoD and proprietary  interactive services to end-users anytime and anywhere.

The idea behind the platform is fairly simple - allow customers to provide Netflix-like services with localized content. The solution has a built-in ad platform, app editor builder and allows the full distribution and monetization of content.

In addition, the company has a provisional patent on a new way to show video ads - they can be seen in split screen. This is a replacement of the pre-roll which many people including us have grown tired of.

The Miami based company is doing very well in the Latin America market and its HQ in Miami likely doesn't hurt.

Tunnel is the Professional way Call Centers Text Customers

September 4, 2017

WhatsApp revolutionized consumer texting. Slack did it for business. Tunnel wants to do it for call centers.

There is no shortage of vendors who will allow your call center to send text messages via an API.

Watch out Slack, Here Comes Flock

September 2, 2017

There is no shortage of competition for the enterprise messaging customer. Slack is the acknowledged leader but Cisco, Microsoft and everyone seems to want to get in on the market. The latest is Flock, a cloud-based team collaboration service, which has attracted 25,000 enterprise users and customers including Tim Hortons, Whirlpool and Princeton University.

According to Bloomberg:
A teenage entrepreneur who became a millionaire by 20 before sharing a billion-dollar fortune at 36, Bhavin Turakhia isn’t afraid to think big. Now he’s putting $45 million of his own money into building a rival to Slack and other office messaging platforms.

The bottom line is the price Flock will charge is more than $3 per user less than Slack.

StaffAlerter Provides Value in Emergency Notification and IoT

July 8, 2017

With terrorist attacks and other shooting incidents becoming commonplace, the need to quickly notify large groups of people regarding dangerous situations seems to have never been greater. While many of the solutions on the market are targeted at governments or large police departments, the emergency notification system on a budget market has been neglected.

Enter StaffAlerter, the infinitely flexible solution which combines the power of IoT-like sensors with IFTTT real-world flexibility. By this we mean that the system can be easily programmed to sense an emergency button being activated in the freezer and then proceed to unlock the freezer door.

Tempered Networks Boosts Trust with Identity-Defined Networks

June 19, 2017

If you missed Paula Bernier’s article (free registration required) in our IoT Evolution Magazine, you may not have known Tempered Networks is the new name for Asguard – which is pronounced the same way as Thor’s home-world but spelled with and added letter u.

The idea behind the company is to build trust between systems to go beyond encryption by using Host Identity Protocol for encryption and IF-MAP. “This is a way to have inherent security in your network because it doesn’t happen at the application layer, it happens at the protocol,” said Jeff Hussey, who established F5 Networks and is now President and CEO of Tempered Networks.

Some months later the company outlined their vision – or the problem they are out to solve in more detail:
