Microsoft's Huge Mobile Gamble

March 5, 2010

The mobile market has come full circle from multitasking to single-tasking

Microsoft's Windows Mobile and its predecessors distinguished themselves as an operating system which are very desktop-like when compared to devices like a Blackberry or Palm VII. At the beginning of the last decade, Palm was at the top of its game and it was soon facing a brutal battle with the iPaq from Compaq which delivered a more laptop-type experience and a bright full-color screen. And my favorite iPaq feature was multitasking which allowed me for example to download a document while emailing.

Microsoft Uses Courts and Other Companies to Fight Google

March 1, 2010

In the blink of an eye a company can become invisible on a search engine due to an algorithm or policy change and in the process they can lose millions of dollars or more.

Last month an internet marketing company Quinstreet went public and within the prospectus you can find the following warning:

Our approaches may be deemed similar to those of our competitors and others in our industry that Internet search websites may consider to be unsuitable or unattractive. Internet search websites could deem our content to be unsuitable or below standards or less attractive or worthy than those of other or competing websites.

Let Companies, not Government Create Jobs

February 23, 2010

Maybe it's because I am a techie or perhaps because I have seen how the post office, tax code and department of motor vehicles works - but I am fairly certain that an investment by Intel - in this case $2 billion for new US companies will generate 100x more lasting jobs per dollar than the US government via stimulus and/or jobs bills. It is worth pointing out that there are other firms investing as well bringing the total investment amount to $3.5B.

The reason VC firms are investing now is they feel more secure about the future and sense the opportunity to make money. This is what drives capitalism -- the opportunity to make money.

History has shown the US economy is vibrant and ever-evolving.

Windows Phone 7 is Really Version 3.0?

February 15, 2010

For years, Microsoft products have been known to be pretty poor until version three came around - at which point they were pretty good. Based upon the early comments about Windows Phone 7, this update seems to be the version 3.0 experience which basically means the best mobile product the software leader has developed to date.

Why?

The company has embraced the clean interface needed to compete in the mobile space without any gimmicky pseudo 3D interface tricks.

The Microsoftization of Google

February 10, 2010

You have to give Google credit; they seem to want to make the world a better place by opening up the world and making technology and services more accessible. And they are powerful enough to make it all happen - search revenue pours in and is being allocated to services which compete with Amazon and Microsoft among others. In the mobile phone space they go up against Palm, RIM, Nokia and Microsoft.

Yesterday they announced a new social networking initiative called Buzz which is supposed to unseat Facebook and twitter.

Apple Antitrust Issues

February 9, 2010

Apple has a very closed ecosystem and at least some think the company may be headed down the road of antitrust litigation if it isn't careful. This article asserts the problem Apple could get into is an area where Google absolutely dominates - advertising. To me, Google will act as an eternal counterbalance letting Apple get away with a great deal as it fights the search giant.

This by the way, this is why regulators allow Oracle to buy anything and everything...

Supercomm Dies, What it Means to Carriers, The Industry

February 8, 2010

Last week, Doug Mohney had the big scoop that Supercomm will be cancelled - he blogged it as a rumor which was subsequently confirmed by the TIA and USTelecom today. As a show organizer myself I get a lot of questions regarding what this news means to our industry. Rather than continuing to opine on a person-by-person basis, I thought it made sense to put my thoughts in writing.

Microsoft Under Scrutiny

February 5, 2010

In a recent post I mentioned that years back I launched the world's first Tablet computing conference and at the time our fortunes were tied to Microsoft. Obviously the tablet PC market did not take off and now that the iPad has debuted and is already deemed to be successful by analysts, many are beginning to dissect the problems at Microsoft.

One very good article on the matter is from Mary Jo Foley at ZDnet who says the answer is for the company to continue focusing on small and isolated teams which launch new products isolated from the corporate parent. Ironically this is exactly what Microsoft did with ResponsePoint, the SMB PBX which was full-featured and a tremendous value.
