China Hack: Is Nothing Secure Anymore?

January 15, 2010

When you couple a massive government spying program with triple encryption and unknown exploits in Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Adobe's Acrobat, you get a terribly troubling outcome. It seems the Chinese have banks and banks of engineers hacking the world's software by using government/corporate espionage on a level not before seen. The object of this program was among other things to get source code from the companies which were hacked. In fact they succeeded in stealing much of it.

Will Silicon Valley go to War with China?

January 12, 2010

To protect the privacy of its users and data, will Google really pull out of the country?

A major challenge for all companies doing business with china is how to you gain access to the huge market of over a billion customers without signing away your crown jewels. Many companies reluctantly have signed over their intellectual property in exchange for being able to compete in the market. At a breakfast I attended some time back, Jack Welch mentioned this was something GE had to do to gain access the mainland.

Tech Rock Star Jamie Siminoff Keynotes Startup Camp Telephony

January 11, 2010

Jamie Siminoff is someone I have great admiration for... He launched a company called SimulScribe which later became PhoneTag and what it did was transcribe your voicemails and send them via email. As far as I am concerned voicemail is useless without receiving it transcribed in an email with an attached MP3 file. You mean you still listen to your voicemails??

Google Breaks Cardinal Supplier Rule

January 11, 2010

There is an unwritten rule that companies who compete with their customers are inviting trouble. When companies break this rule, generally their competition will use this information against them when there is a bid on the table. Over time, when you break this rule, it bites you in the rear.

Companies like Intel, who have a dominant position in the market, are generally able to bend or break these principles to some degree but for most others, you know where to draw the line.
