Increase Marketing Spend in a Recession

I just couldn't help but sharing this article about how companies who increase their marketing spend in a recession come out of it doing better than when they went into it. I am not advocating that there is a recession mind you but even in a slow down, the companies who remain consistent in their messaging do better than others who wait for phones to ring by themselves.

Quantcast Update 01/08

On November 6, 2007 I had a post (see bottom of post for chart) where I showed how TMC compares with other IP Communications sites. I did this by pulling numbers from Quantcast, a web service which tracks web traffic worldwide but whose numbers quoted here equal the unique United States visitors each month.

So a Quantcast ranking of 3,000 means that you have 100 unique visitors each day per month (approximately 30 days). So 100 x 30 = 3,000. Again -- these are US numbers only.

In November of last year, TMCnet attracted just over 711,000 US unique visitors per month according to Quantcast.

Now, just two months later, our Quantcast ranking is 870,019, an increase of 159,019.

Alcatel-Lucent May Cut More

October 30, 2007

It is a shame to hear that Alcatel-Lucent may be cutting more people than expected. I was really impressed with the wireless security device the company recently rolled out with Sprint and I’m saddened to see great new products accompanying job loss. But then again if the customers are merging, so too must the equipment providers. Here is the scary news. The company is planning on cutting 12,500 but at least one analyst thinks the company needs to cut 30k to be as efficient as Ericsson. Ouch! The Financial Times has more on this story.

TMCnet New Traffic Record

Thanks to all our readers and visitors who have allowed TMCnet to achieve a new traffic record in July 2007. Here are the numbers: Page Views 30,977,147 Average Visit Length 35:45 Unique Visitors 3,078,409 Page Views refers to actual pages viewed. So if you look at three articles a month on TMCnet you represent 3 page views. Our prior average was 20 million. 30,977,147 represents a 50+% increase over the prior record. Average Visit Length represents how much time a person spends on the site Unique Visitors represents how many unique viewers came to TMCnet in the entire month. Thank you also to the TMC team for continuing to produce content our audience finds compelling.

TMCnet Goes Twitter

It seems like if you are under 18 you spend a good deal of time twittering on well – Twitter. Since my typical reader is above 18 you may not be aware that Twitter is a service allowing you to send and receive messages via SMS on cell phones. People spend hours letting their friends know (in excruciating detail sometimes) about all aspects of their life. “I am going to have lunch.” “I am having a snack.” “I am sick,” are some of the things you may see while twittering. But if you get sick of twittering with friends and are interested in using Twitter to keep up with the latest (and best of course) communications and technology news and analysis, be sure to check twitter.com/tmcnet.

SimulScribe: Real Visual Voicemail

So here I sit on vacation missing the hysteria taking the nation by storm. Of course I am talking about the iPhone lunacy. This device will definitely change the telecom world for the better and moreover it is already a target of other companies looking to capitalize on the Apple marketing machine buzz. Witness the humorous videos being produced by companies like SimulScribe (related entries). As you recall, SimulScribe offers voicemail transcription and allows you to read your voicemail instead of listening to it. As the company says, it is real visual voicemail while the iPhone is “fake” visual voicemail. Take a look at video 1 and 2 for yourself.

InfoWorld on Patent Reform

Let’s hope patent reform gets a great amount of momentum in our government and it actually happens. Large companies are indeed hoarding patents and using them as weapons to crush smaller companies. Patent litigation seems to be increasing by the day and reforming the system would allow companies to spend more time developing products for the good of markets and less time meeting with lawyers and in the courts. Read: New legislation would overhaul U.S. patent system.

Thanks to readers like you, TMCnet has been blessed with 1-2 million unique visitors every month and last month over 20 million pages were viewed on this site. We are truly grateful to our readers, sponsors and advertisers who support this site and all other TMC products and initiatives. Of course hats off to the TMC team who nurtures the development of our beloved communications and technology portal. At TMC we are always innovating. We always look for ways to serve our audience better. A number of months back an advertiser came to us and said according to his research, TMCnet is not only the top communications site in the US but the world. The interesting part of this conversation is it seemed that not everyone knew just how popular TMCnet was outside of the US. To rectify this situation and moreover to make it easier for those people around the world to get access to news pertaining to their interests, we embarked on developing TMCnet for various continents. But instead of hard coding this project, we decided it would be better to build a framework which was customizable. This would take longer but what it would allow is a fully customizable news portal by specific topic or even specific keywords. Once this project dubbed myTMCnet was launched and working we could then easily extend it to be continent specific, country specific, topic specific, etc. Yesterday we rolled out the beta of myTMCnet. TMCnet has 3,000-4,000 articles, press releases and other content pouring into it daily. We have now given the world a custom interface so they can see this news in any way they choose. For example, if you are interested in IMS news you can add a custom box dedicated to IMS. Or perhaps you want to track SanSay or Avaya or unified communications. It doesn’t matter. I have found MyTMCnet is an invaluable competitive research tool allowing me to see what they are up to.

TMCnet Sets Page View Record

March 20, 2007

This past February 2006, TMCnet passed the 20 million page view mark for the first time ever with a total of 20,554,331 page views from a total of 1,169,160 unique visitors. I am personally thrilled with this accomplishment because it shows TMCnet is becoming more sticky and our visitors continue to return in ever-greater numbers. Thank you readers for helping us achieve this goal. We are happy to continue serving you with the most targeted and complete communications and technology news and analysis.
