NYC or France, Where Would You Locate Your Company?

January 7, 2017

New York City – whose moniker is “The City that Never Sleeps” has pushed to ensure your company never sleeps and in today’s connected and digital economy, this may be the difference between success and failure.

If you had a chance to choose a western region to locate your company and you had the choice of just New York City or France, which would you choose based on recent events? Moreover, if you had to make your decision largely based on recent government actions – let’s the last few weeks or so, which would you choose?

In other words, we are going to put aside tarriffs, currency, minimum wage, taxation, regulations, the availability of a solid slice of pizza, baguette or the availability of fine wine.

As we reported on Christmas Day of last year, France has a new law which allows people working for companies with 50 or more people to negotiate to not work after normal business hours.

2017 Predictions From Rich Tehrani

December 9, 2016

Without further ado, here are my predictions for the new year!!! What do you think?

  1. We will see major financial problems begin to take shape at hardware companies without a solid cloud strategy.
  2. Trump’s new offshore tax rules will bring a flood of cash to tech companies – much of this will be shared via dividends and buybacks but it will also find its way into M&A as well as new product development.
  3. Smart factories with low cost energy will make the US a major force in manufacturing but this prediction will need to take 10 years to play out and thanks to IoT and robotics, the factory of tomorrow will need 1/10th the workers of today.
  4. Chinese cell phone provider Huawei or Xiaomi will become a serious thorn in the side of Samsung – producing low cost phones for hundreds less than the Korean maker and selling them in large numbers outside China.

Go!Foton Hopes to Advance Data Center and Carrier Fiber Transformation

November 23, 2016

Continuous advancements in technology and hyperbolic cloud growth is straining all networks at carrier central offices and data centers alike. Virtually all aspects of the data center have evolved - from Ethernet speeds to software defined networks and even SD-WAN. In corporate networks we've seen the rise of virtualization become table stakes for companies of more than about 25 people. Carriers have been moving towards NFV to gain similar benefits in their central offices.

Yet there hasn't been the same evolution in fiber management and connectivity and its the reason we interviewed Farshid Mohammadi of Go!Foton to learn more about his company's efforts in this area.

Tell us about your company, Go!Foton

Embracing Change: The Shift from Making Products to Selling Value

When he was younger he started collecting baseball cards and eventually it became a business. At one point they tried a different angle - they blindfolded a kid and let him pick from a group of cards for 50 cents. They then realized if there were higher value cards, they could charge more.

ORBCOMM Looks to Become Complete IoT Solutions Service Provider

October 17, 2016

One of the topics discussed often among communications service providers is whether they want to be relegated to dumb pipes or they want to add services and increase the value of their offerings. The latter idea generally wins out and the concept also applies to satellite providers like ORBCOMM. I recently sat down to talk about the company with Sue Rutherford, VP of Marketing and we discussed how the organization has evolved by adding transportation management expertise through acquisitions.

The goal of the company is to become a solutions service provider, covering all parts of the IoT ecosystem.

Your Phone Just Ate Your Car Key

October 17, 2016

Are you ready for your new digital future? It’s a great question to ask as the role your mobile phone plays in your life continues to grow. Not only is your iPhone or Android great for texting and Pokémon catching, you can soon use it to open your car door.

In a recent conversation with Pelle Svensson, Product Marketing Short Range and Sven Etzold, Sr. Director Business Marketing at u-blox, I got a chance to discuss what this module maker is looking forward to seeing happen as bluetooth low energy 4.2 or BLE rolls out.

Procera Helps Carriers Shape Even Encrypted Traffic

September 26, 2016

One of the biggest challenges for network operators is certainly dealing with the growth of network traffic in a margin-compression environment. Video is one of the main drivers of bandwidth growth on the net but it isn’t always easy to deal with it. Consider mobile traffic is growing 53% CAGR from 2015 to 2020.

See graph below:

In addition to dealing with the above issues, carriers have to also manage various video providers and their particular responses to your traffic shaping.

SD-WAN Fuels Aryaka 150% Growth

July 13, 2016

Aryaka just announced another great quarter in Q2 - 150% growth. These are the highlights:
  • Over 150% year over year growth for Q2 and the first half of the year, as compared to 2015
  • Over 70 new customers added, including gaming company, Demonware; cable manufacturer, Volex; the educational platform, Knewton; and Quanshi, the leading online collaboration service provider in China.
  • 40% of total bookings generated from existing customer base, who expanded their use of Aryaka’s services
  • Partner contribution of more than 73% of total Q2 bookings
  • Exited Q2 with $45M+ of unbilled backlog (customer contractual commitments yet to be invoiced).
  • China, Asia Pacific overall, and Europe were among key growth drivers with bookings in these regions equaling momentum in the U.S.
We had been working on an interview with the company regarding their last quarter results and was just about to post it. The timing couldn't be better.

With Polycom, Siris Capital Builds Impressive UC Holdings

July 11, 2016

Many where caught off guard when they learned Siris Capital outbid Mitel for Polycom but there are some good reasons for Siris to have made this move. After the Mitel acquisition was announced, I detailed the good and bad about the deal.

Here were the two comments which I placed in the bad category:

Bad: Polycom most logically should have ended up merging with Plantronics IMO – the companies are geographically close to one another and the synergies between headsets and other endpoints seemed like a perfect fit. I’ve thought this for many years.
