ORBCOMM Looks to Become Complete IoT Solutions Service Provider

October 17, 2016

One of the topics discussed often among communications service providers is whether they want to be relegated to dumb pipes or they want to add services and increase the value of their offerings. The latter idea generally wins out and the concept also applies to satellite providers like ORBCOMM. I recently sat down to talk about the company with Sue Rutherford, VP of Marketing and we discussed how the organization has evolved by adding transportation management expertise through acquisitions.

The goal of the company is to become a solutions service provider, covering all parts of the IoT ecosystem.

Your Phone Just Ate Your Car Key

October 17, 2016

Are you ready for your new digital future? It’s a great question to ask as the role your mobile phone plays in your life continues to grow. Not only is your iPhone or Android great for texting and Pokémon catching, you can soon use it to open your car door.

In a recent conversation with Pelle Svensson, Product Marketing Short Range and Sven Etzold, Sr. Director Business Marketing at u-blox, I got a chance to discuss what this module maker is looking forward to seeing happen as bluetooth low energy 4.2 or BLE rolls out.

Procera Helps Carriers Shape Even Encrypted Traffic

September 26, 2016

One of the biggest challenges for network operators is certainly dealing with the growth of network traffic in a margin-compression environment. Video is one of the main drivers of bandwidth growth on the net but it isn’t always easy to deal with it. Consider mobile traffic is growing 53% CAGR from 2015 to 2020.

See graph below:

In addition to dealing with the above issues, carriers have to also manage various video providers and their particular responses to your traffic shaping.

We had been working on an interview with the company regarding their last quarter results and was just about to post it. The timing couldn't be better.

With Polycom, Siris Capital Builds Impressive UC Holdings

July 11, 2016

Many where caught off guard when they learned Siris Capital outbid Mitel for Polycom but there are some good reasons for Siris to have made this move. After the Mitel acquisition was announced, I detailed the good and bad about the deal.

Here were the two comments which I placed in the bad category:

Bad: Polycom most logically should have ended up merging with Plantronics IMO – the companies are geographically close to one another and the synergies between headsets and other endpoints seemed like a perfect fit. I’ve thought this for many years.

API of the Week: Use Flowroute to Access the Multibillion Dollar Telecom API Space

May 18, 2016

Flowroute is one of the companies in technology that “gets it” when it comes to APIs. Yes, I know APIs aren’t new… Us developers have been using them and function calls since programming progressed beyond punch cards. It’s for this reason, some underestimate how much is happening in this area of technology. They may not realize just how much opportunity there is in opening up your platform to the world of developers and becoming the hub at the center of a thriving mini-economy you help create and foster.

The company had also sent me this email and it is so powerful, it literally took my breath away.

Allied Fiber LLC Has not Filed Chapter 11

April 25, 2016

Allied Fiber LLC has been engaged in a long running dispute with its senior secured lender. After exhaustive efforts and numerous offers that the company believed would have resulted in the full payment of all of the lender’s principle and interest, for reasons unknown to the company, a settlement was unable to be reached.

On April 20th, 2016, the senior secured lender purportedly exercised voting rights in the Allied Fiber LLC subsidiary companies (AF Southeast LLC, AF Florida LLC and AF Georgia LLC) and allegedly replaced the members of the subsidiaries, appointed a chief restructuring officer, and then caused the subsidiaries – not including Allied Fiber LLC – to file for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding in Delaware.

Apparently there will now be a court-supervised sale of the subsidiaries to the highest bidder which may include a marketing period that may be approximately 90-days.

Coriant Hopes to Help Carriers Move to NFV and SDN

April 18, 2016

Earlier this year, Coriant, shared a study of more than 80 network operators and found the following:

A reported 80 percent of them showed a high interest in using SDN to make their networks better and more capable of handling the demands of a mobile clientele.

Not surprisingly, the company has been doing its best to establish itself

as the go to resource for these operators as they make the shift into these new areas. In fact at MWC16 they introduced the Transcend Packet Controller which Extends SDN control from transport to IP/MPLS Networks. It further enhances multi-layer optimization and improves service performance in IP/MPLS based mobile backhaul and carrier aggregation networks.

Mitel Buys Polycom: The Good and Bad

April 15, 2016

This post has been updated on April 15, 2016 at 4:30 pm with feedback from Wes Durow, CMO of Mitel. Also, it turns out we broke the news on the potential of this merger even earlier than thought... December of 2015.

Last month my fellow TMCnet blogger Peter Radizeski broke the news that Mitel was buying Polycom – so if you’re a TMCnet reader, once again, you got in front of this news. Peter had more thoughts on the matter today as it became clear the acquisition was happening.
