TMC is Hiring

July 17, 2009

While the media business in general has been like so many other industries such as financial and real estate - meaning lots of doom and gloom, I am happy to report TMC is hiring to fill new positions and looking for new people as well. We just hired three new professionals in our sales group and expect to add more people this year.

You may recall I mentioned we were looking last month.

While print publications have seen advertising decline and we should know as we publish four magazines - we have positioned ourselves for the day when marketing moved to the web since the nineties.

How to Sell Communications Products This Fall

July 10, 2009

I know we are in a recession and everything is supposed to be gloom and doom, etc. but please indulge me as I remind many of you just how important it is in these tough times to get new customers.

It is for this reason I feel compelled to remind you ITEXPO has become the world's communications conference - the place you need to go to find new products and services. As a result, vendors/exhibitors were thrilled with ITEXPO in Miami this past January.

Doug Mohney Writing for TMCnet

July 7, 2009

Funny, I have been meaning to mention Doug Mohney is writing for TMCnet for a while now. I decided indeed today was the day I would do so and I then came across a post from Doug mentioning his writing on TMCnet with links to many of his articles and a hello message to me.

For those of you who were fan's of Doug you can find much of his content here and some of his most recent articles are below:

Hi back Doug

Something Old and New at Tiscali International Network Media Event

July 6, 2009

A while back I headed out to Sardinia Italy to attend a media roundtable hosted by Tiscali International Network regarding the state and future of broadband technology. I do get invited to quite a few of these press/analyst events and this one really stood out in my mind due to the quality of the speakers and the location of the event itself. Sardinia is located in the middle of the Mediterranean and if you picture Italy as a boot kicking Sicily - a soccer ball, Sardinia would be located at the top of the kick.

CBX 2009

June 23, 2009

On Thursday of this week I will be at one of my favorite events - the CBX conference in New York where I will be interviewing some of the best and brightest in the data communications space. The event is hosted by Telx, a leader in the carrier hotel, data center and colocation spaces (Telx is also sponsor of the popular collocation community on TMCnet). Many of the companies in attendance at this invitation-only event are Telx customers looking to do business with one another. A bunch of well-known tech companies will be there as well such as China Telecom, NTT Communications, Force 10, Adva, Ciena, Cisco and more.

IBM Brocade Relationship Trouble for Cisco?

May 31, 2009

If you ask Cisco publically what they think of IBM you will get nothing but praise. In fact Cisco counts IBM as a major partner and IBM does the same with Cisco. Oftentimes the companies even promote technologies like collaboration together.

But more recently this alliance seems to be facing a challenge.

Expand Networks Offers Free Mobile WAN Acceleration Software

May 30, 2009

The drive for more bandwidth does not slow - even in a global recession some reports show bandwidth needs increasing at rates higher than 100% per year on carrier and enterprise networks. The trend towards more collaborative applications, video, VoIP and cloud-based services are no doubt just a few factors in what seems to be just the beginning of a global bandwidth binge showing no sign of slowing.

Enter Expand a company focusing on application acceleration over WANs who is looking to help solve the branch office bandwidth drought. The company makes its living selling a variety of appliances which they say will increase ROI and stretch IT budgets further.

Adtran 1544 Series Layer 3 Switches Fill Networking Void

May 30, 2009

ADTRAN is a networking company which has transformed a great deal over the past decades. In the nineties, the company held a virtual monopoly in the CSU/DSU market and most every network had the company's standalone boxes in their network (including TMC). In fact the company was once synonymous with the term CSU/DSU in my mind. As this functionality was added into other boxes, the company saw its identity erode and in the process took the opportunity to grow into a major networking force selling over 1,700 products to enterprise and carrier customers.

TMC Wishes Greg Galitzine a Fond Farewell

May 7, 2009

For nearly 13 years, Greg Galitzine has been a tremendously valuable part of the TMC team. His career started as an editor for CTI Magazine in 1996. Where he reported on the collision of the computer and communications spaces including what we called IP telephony back in the day. In 1997 we convened a meeting with Greg to explore whether it made sense to launch a publication in the IP telephony space.

Nortel Almost Gone

April 29, 2009

It looks like Nortel could be gone as a standalone company in the next few weeks according to published reports. The news is sad but true. It looks like Avaya or Siemens could pick up the enterprise pieces. The optical division could go to Fujitsu, Huaweii, Alcatel-Lucent or potentially a private equity firm.
