Broadband at One Dollar per Mbps

Cablevision has released its 100 Mbps service in Long Island, NY termed Optimum Online Ultra. 100 Mbps is the download speed while upload speed is rated at 15 Mbps. While I agree with Om Malik that Cablevision is doing things differently than many other cable companies who are effectively fighting with customers by implementing broadband caps... A little known secret about Cablevision broadband is heavy users are effectively restricted to a penalty box which drastically reduces their upload and download speed until they upgrade their service level or call and have the service reset.

Still, I consider the company's broadband service to be among the best values in broadband access in the country and have nothing but praise for a company that not only provides broadband at $1/Mbps but throws in free WiFi to boot.

What AT&T Earnings Tell us

AT&T just reported earnings and revenue (release) was down slightly - 0.6% or $30.57 billion. Most of the 1.2 million net new wireless customers purchased iPhones which shows just how dependant the company is on Apple for its wireless growth. And wireless is a crucial part of the business when you consider it reported a 12% increase in profit on a just under 9% revenue gain. The good news is churn held steady at 1.2% which in this environment.

But what analysts may have missed is the fact that the iPhone is the stickiest phone in the history of the wireless business because of the App Store which enables these devices to be powerful pocket computing devices which run a plethora of applications.

Who is Bidding on Nortel?

According to the Wall Street Journal, there are a number of companies vying for pieces of Nortel. The LTE research and carrier groups may go to Nokia Siemens Networks or NSN if the JV between Nokia and Siemens has its way. NSN sends my editorial team news of a win a day from around the world but few of these are in the US. This acquisition would help cement the joint venture as a true global player with much more strength in North America.

TMC Builds You Online Communities

For those of us used to continuous and fast broadband access, having to wait for a computer to respond due to poor hotel connectivity is frustrating beyond belief. In this economy, many of us need to be more productive than ever and often work efficiency is directly related to speed of information access.

Cisco Moves in Opposite Directions

With all the opportunity to sell more products in the data center and the consumer electronics space, a company like Cisco can afford to simultaneously attack both markets. To that end, Cisco recently announced its entry into the blade server market and today purchased Pure Digital Technologies for $590 million, the company behind the Flip Video brand of pocket-sized video recorders.

Cisco's efforts in the consumer electronics space have not been nearly as successful as its accomplishments in the enterprise but the company seems to believe if it sells enough products in the connected home, sooner or later it will become a preferred provider in the consumer setting. They could be right but the problem for the industry today is the threat from Apple who will continue to own more and more of the home network and consumer electronics market.
