March 16, 2007

Here is my audio podcast on the Cisco acquisition of WebEx. There are many positives here and lots of interesting perspective and I kept it to a few minutes. I hope you like it.

TMCnet Sets Page View Record

March 20, 2007

This past February 2006, TMCnet passed the 20 million page view mark for the first time ever with a total of 20,554,331 page views from a total of 1,169,160 unique visitors. I am personally thrilled with this accomplishment because it shows TMCnet is becoming more sticky and our visitors continue to return in ever-greater numbers.   Thank you readers for helping us achieve this goal. We are happy to continue serving you with the most targeted and complete communications and technology news and analysis.

MyTMCnet

March 21, 2007

Thanks to readers like you, TMCnet has been blessed with 1-2 million unique visitors every month and last month over 20 million pages were viewed on this site. We are truly grateful to our readers, sponsors and advertisers who support this site and all other TMC products and initiatives.   Of course hats off to the TMC team who nurtures the development of our beloved communications and technology portal.   At TMC we are always innovating. We always look for ways to serve our audience better.   A number of months back an advertiser came to us and said according to his research, TMCnet is not only the top communications site in the US but the world.   The interesting part of this conversation is it seemed that not everyone knew just how popular TMCnet was outside of the US.   To rectify this situation and moreover to make it easier for those people around the world to get access to news pertaining to their interests, we embarked on developing TMCnet for various continents.   But instead of hard coding this project, we decided it would be better to build a framework which was customizable.   This would take longer but what it would allow is a fully customizable news portal by specific topic or even specific keywords.   Once this project dubbed myTMCnet was launched and working we could then easily extend it to be continent specific, country specific, topic specific, etc.   Yesterday we rolled out the beta of myTMCnet.   TMCnet has 3,000-4,000 articles, press releases and other content pouring into it daily.   We have now given the world a custom interface so they can see this news in any way they choose.   For example, if you are interested in IMS news you can add a custom box dedicated to IMS. Or perhaps you want to track SanSay or Avaya or unified communications.   It doesn’t matter.   I have found MyTMCnet is an invaluable competitive research tool allowing me to see what they are up to.

TMCnet Goes Twitter

July 4, 2007

It seems like if you are under 18 you spend a good deal of time twittering on well – Twitter. Since my typical reader is above 18 you may not be aware that Twitter is a service allowing you to send and receive messages via SMS on cell phones. People spend hours letting their friends know (in excruciating detail sometimes) about all aspects of their life. “I am going to have lunch.” “I am having a snack.” “I am sick,” are some of the things you may see while twittering.   But if you get sick of twittering with friends and are interested in using Twitter to keep up with the latest (and best of course) communications and technology news and analysis, be sure to check twitter.com/tmcnet.

TMCnet New Traffic Record

August 15, 2007

Thanks to all our readers and visitors who have allowed TMCnet to achieve a new traffic record in July 2007.   Here are the numbers:   Page Views 30,977,147 Average Visit Length 35:45 Unique Visitors 3,078,409   Page Views refers to actual pages viewed. So if you look at three articles a month on TMCnet you represent 3 page views. Our prior average was 20 million.   30,977,147 represents a 50+% increase over the prior record.   Average Visit Length represents how much time a person spends on the site   Unique Visitors represents how many unique viewers came to TMCnet in the entire month.   Thank you also to the TMC team for continuing to produce content our audience finds compelling.

FonalityCRM

November 5, 2007

Fonality has made quite a splash in the open source communications market and the most recent news coming out of the California company is an acquisition of Insightful Solutions Pty Ltd, one of the world’s largest SugarCRM development houses.   I had an opportunity to have a podcast interview with Fonality CEO Chris Lyman about the acquisition, the future of telephony, CRM, unified communications and the market in general.   As part of the transaction, Fonality will also begin selling Insightful’s SugarCRM managed service offering called FonalityCRM. The solution is integrated with PBXtra and trixbox Pro and provides click-to-call dialing, agent screen pops, telephone campaign management for outbound sales teams, and a host of other features. It is hosted at one of the six Fonality data centers and available immediately to PBXtra and trixbox Pro customers worldwide. The underlying FonalityCRM managed service platform was developed by Insightful to provide a complete on-demand offering that is updated, maintained, backed-up and available 24x7.   As you may expect, Fonality will leverage Insightful’s knowledge and experience when supporting SugarCRM deployments, as well as support of its other solutions.

This acquisition is infinitely logical and also provides a tipping point in the open-source market.

Podcast Interview: Oswin Eleanora, Acision

December 3, 2007

In my travels, one of the more knowledgeable players I have run across in the space of telecom – and especially wireless communications is Oswin Eleonora (Oz) the Senior VP Sales and Marketing North America for Acision. You may recall I wrote about Oz and Acision back in July of this year.   I had a chance to pick his brain again regarding Verizon’s open network announcement, the iPhone, the future of wireless, the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), Android, CDMA, GSM and more.   How will service providers differentiate themselves in the upcoming years as networks become more commoditized? Oz has the answer.

Quantcast Update 01/08

January 15, 2008

On November 6, 2007 I had a post (see bottom of post for chart) where I showed how TMC compares with other IP Communications sites. I did this by pulling numbers from Quantcast, a web service which tracks web traffic worldwide but whose numbers quoted here equal the unique United States visitors each month.

So a Quantcast ranking of 3,000 means that you have 100 unique visitors each day per month (approximately 30 days). So 100 x 30 = 3,000. Again -- these are US numbers only.

In November of last year, TMCnet attracted just over 711,000 US unique visitors per month according to Quantcast.

Now, just two months later, our Quantcast ranking is 870,019, an increase of 159,019.

ECI Telecom Podcast Interview with CMO Laura Howard

February 4, 2008

Since my last article about ECI Telecom, the company has gone private. The question I am sure you are wondering about is how has this move changed the outlook for the company if at all and moreover what is ECI up to today?

Thankfully, your questions will be answered as this podcast interview with Laura Howard the company's CMO will keep you up to date on how ECI Telecom is evolving from a product to a solutions company. In addition, you get to learn how ECI has separated itself from many of the larger players in the telecom space and how they are navigating the international markets for communications equipment.

Another thing you'll learn is how ECI has broadened out its portfolio and isn't just an optical-only player these days. In addition, this podcast will explain how the company views next-gen video, voice and IP and how it helps solve problems for service providers.

Finally, you'll learn about how wireless backhaul has been a hot growth area for ECI and moreover where other telecom opportunities lie.

Service providers will get a great glimpse (or should that be "listen?" ) at what they should be concerned about as Howard gives unique global and real-world perspective on how ECI Telecom helps providers achieve their goals in a number of geographically disperse markets.

Podcast Interview: 8x8 VP Marketing Huw Rees

February 5, 2008

8x8, the company behind Packet8 service has been doing a terrific job running their company with positive financial results and new services which are innovative and unique. Some are video-based, some are mobile and others are in the call center market.

Two weeks ago I had a chance to speak with Huw Rees the VP of Sales & Marketing at the company onstage at ITEXPO in Miami, FL. The talk went very well and there was tremendous feedback from the audience so I decided it made sense to talk with Rees in a podcast format allowing listeners who couldn't make the keynote to hear what is happening at his company and the industry as a whole.

Some of the items discussed have to do with Gov. Schwarzenegger's recent California Broadband Task Force report, mobile services, the SMB, and a host of other issues.

One area worth mentioning is marketing as the company is competing against at least one competitor who has told Wall Street that they will buy market share at all costs. We also delved a bit into patents and how intellectual property can be used as a defense and offense.

Hope you enjoy the podcast.
