You know I would never stoop to reminding you about the weather to persuade you to attend what I believe to the be the best tech and telecom conference in the world - OK, maybe I would.

So I was driving along this morning on the way to work and noticed I couldn't feel any of my fingers. I decided to check to make sure I was wearing gloves. I was. Then I realized I couldn't feel any of my toes and yes I had shoes on.

I then looked at the temperature reading and it said one degree. I decided to risk my life to take the picture above while driving - I could have pulled over but hey, I was late for my first meeting and I would do just about anything for you, my faithful reader. Attention law enforcement professionals - some elements of this blog post may have been overly sensationalized in order to provide dramatic effect.

But getting back to Connecticut where TMC is based - one coworker who lives in Danbury, CT said it was -11 degrees when she left her house this morning. And that's nothing. If you can believe it... CBS News reports temperatures with wind chill hit as cold as -50 degrees F!

BTW, in AP biology back in high school we learned that -40F is the same temperature as -40C - this little bit of trivia courtesy of Mrs. Beers my 11th grade teacher. Hope I spelled her name right.

Oh, but back to the point of this meandering post... It is freezing out. There is one show in Miami next week where you can go to network with those who matter in the world of tech and telecom. Almost forgot to mention it is called ITEXPO East 2011. Every important topic is to be discussed from super WiFi to SIP to open source to virtualization and cloud computing. It is all there - in Miami under a single roof where you will also get to hear keynotes from former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin as well as executives from BT, Adobe, Aculab, GENBAND and Digium - the creators of Asterisk. Its the only industry event with a networking party at Mangos, one of the hottest spots on South Beach. Yes, there are other places to network as well.

So I hope to see you there and I look forward to greeting you in person.

Here is the ITEXPO show site, collocated events, free workshops, exhibitor list and giveaways you can win such as a new Jeep.

I am fortunate that I get to speak reporters about my company from time to time and whenever I do I always worry until the article comes out. Reporters are busy (speaking from experience) and they don't always get all the facts right. I always blame myself when this happens - after all if you communicate in a clear, concise manner with an organized, structured system of segueing between topics, it is much easier to follow.

Personally I have sat in briefings with charismatic tech leaders who spend 30 minutes talking and when I look at my notes, I wonder what the heck was said. Someday I vow to teach classes on how to speak with the media but in the mean time I am very proud to say that TMC was just written up in the Norwalk Hour - our local newspaper. We even made the front page of the business section.

The article written by Chris Bosak is one of the most accurate articles I have ever seen. He absorbed my fast-talking, excited, enthusiastic rambling, took notes on paper and produced something I could read and say - hey this is exactly what we do. Thanks Chis - great article and thanks to the Norwalk Hour, the TMC team, our customers - readers, sponsors, advertisers, exhibitors, partners and suppliers.

Here is the article (registration required) and some excerpts.

While some media companies downsize and struggle to gain back employees, Norwalk-based TMC has grown to the point where it needed more space.

The company also produces live events and produces videos for customers, but its various "communities" on the Internet are now TMC's core business.

The communities are geared toward a specific audience and TMC staffers and freelancers produce stories related to the subject. The sites, most of which are sponsored, are constantly updated as new stories and news become available.

Content volume helps the communities reach the top of Internet search engines. That is attractive to the sponsors of the communities.

"We're selling premium real estate," Tehrani said. "This is ocean-front real estate. By working with us, our sponsors rank high on a specific subject area."

TMC currently has 130 communities -- from next generation communications to headsets -- and at least 15 in development. Rich Tehrani said the company will eventually expand beyond the technology arena.

Tehrani said companies want to sponsor sites because they can not replicate the volume of stories produced by TMC.

"Companies can't accomplish this on their own. They try," Rich Tehrani said. "My father used to say: 'If you don't market, you don't exist.' Now you can say: 'If you don't show up on the first page of search engines, you don't exist.

"The most important part of the transformation was taking a publishing company and turning it into a media company powered by technology," he added. "Advertising is a commodity so we differentiate ourselves by developing targeted communities."

Not everything TMC has done over the years has been a success, but the company has never been afraid to try something new. That attitude has helped the company survive 38 years, Rich Tehrani said.

"The most important thing we've been able to do is react quickly and evolve," he said. "We're not afraid to fail. We're not afraid to make mistakes. You learn from it and do better next time."

Nadji Tehrani, who at 74 still shows up for work every day, said hiring the right people is another key to success for any company.

"We have a great staff," he said. "Everyone works hard. That's one of the things that makes me very proud -- to have this many quality people."

Please join me in welcoming Juliana Kenny to the TMC news room and to the TMC team where she will be writing, editing and producing videos. Here is her first video which discusses the newly launched TelX Ethernet Exchange - which will allow carriers and enterprises to interconnect their Ethernet networks. This Cisco-powered service should be quite successful based on my early discussions with TelX customers as well as TelX executives.

Speaking of Cisco, Juliana further discusses Cisco's prediction that Internet traffic will hit 767 exabytes by 2014. The video has lot more and I don't want to ruin it so watch, enjoy and have a great weekend.

How do companies make it through gut-wrenching industry and technological change without going under?

I do my best to wish every TMC a team member a Happy TMC Anniversary and as such the start date of all of our full-time members are in my calendar so I can be the one to send them this greeting (If I forgot you in the past - please accept my apologies). Last week I noticed that it was the anniversary of Nadji Tehrani, the company Founder & Chairman, my father and the person who decided to start this company in 1972. Funny, I never noticed his start date on my calendar before - and it occurred to me that this was TMC's 38-year anniversary.

Wow! Has it been that long?

And as I reminisced about the past decades I thought it would be instructive to go over the lessons we learned which kept us alive as markets and industries changed. I have also added in some of my personal philosophies as I feel these are interrelated in keeping our company and perhaps yours successful.

The Customer is First

I am thankful that the TMC team has always been the most customer-friendly of any company we compete with based on comments we regularly receive from customers. We are far from perfect and we are constantly trying to improve but to make it at TMC you need to put the customer first. And by the way, customer should refer to other team-members - showing respect, courtesy and care for those people you work with and our end customers is what has allowed us to survive and thrive when the going gets tough.

Take nothing for granted

The list of competitors TMC has had these past decades is incredible. Oftentimes we competed against companies which were considered impervious to competition. In the nineties we had a competitor who had a massive trade show in Los Angeles which companies in the industry told me we could never compete with.

At the beginning of this decade there was a very large trade show which we were told we could never compete with. Both of the referenced shows are now gone as is COMDEX, Supercomm, CEBIT America and many dozens of others.

If you are on top today - consider yourself lucky - it is not a right or a gift. A new technology will wipe you out overnight if you are not aware of the changing business landscape.

Speed

14 years ago I was approached by someone who worked for a competitor and he told me something stunning. "We know there is no way TMC can compete with us because they are too slow." Sh&%$T, he was right I thought. I didn't sleep that night - I came up with ways of transforming our company so we can become not only faster but fastest. Within the next few years, we performed a slew of market-changing announcements and strategies that I found out later left our competition in the dust.

At one point in our past we were alerted to the fact that a competitor was going to launch a new product which we too were about to launch. We further knew we had a few weeks to saturate the universe with our product and message because the decision-maker for the opposing company decided to take two-weeks off.

When this person got back from vacation, they decided they were too late and cancelled their product launch shortly thereafter.

Fail

If you aren't failing regularly you are doing something very wrong. Launch, launch, launch and learn from your mistakes and be quick to change strategy. Streamline the launch process so it costs as little as possible. Use brand extensions to test new techniques and business models... Yes, use your core and successful businesses to test new ideas and concepts.

The world is filled with opportunity - how do you know you are doing your part to take advantage of them all? The only way to know for sure is a track record of not only success but failures that in some cases became successes as well.

Be Passionate

If you don't have passion for what you do, why do it? Life is too short. Technology has changed the way our business works - before the Internet, a great artistic design or article would be read by a predefined amount of people. With the advent of the web, the best content is spread virally and as such you can get instant feedback on your work via search engine rankings, referred traffic, comments and more. In other words, the Net allows us to entertain the most innate passion in all of us - the need for recognition and positive reinforcement. If you don't agree then you explain the success of blogs, Twitter and Facebook.

Work Harder

The world is getting more competitive and with few exceptions, every industry is a target for intense competition. In just over a decade technology has helped wipe out photo processing stores, florists, retail stores, catalogers and more.

Profit margins are being and will continue to be squeezed thanks to the Internet.

Every year I find myself working harder and the companies who don't keep up are generally liquidated and the employees are left scrambling looking for new jobs with little notice.

Obviously hard work alone won't cut it - you can row as hard as you like but if your rudder is not pointing in the right direction, you are destined to crash and burn. Be sure your company is doing all of the above and if needed, be the change agent to make these ideas a reality. If you do, you will likely be rewarded. If not, perhaps you are on the wrong boat - I mean team.

I asked our founder Nadji, why he started this company and he went over the last 35+ years in a few minutes. Perhaps the quote which moved me most was the following, "We wanted to be first and better than anybody else."

Quite often, passion and enthusiasm disseminated from the top is the equivalent of hitting a tuning fork hard on a desk. Just as the vibrations feel as if they are more powerful as they descend down the fork, passion and enthusiasm spread throughout an organization can be even more powerful than the initial jolt of energy a company's founder injects into a team.

A passion for serving our customers well - being accessible, listening to constructive criticism and treating each other with courtesy and respect are a few of the reasons I believe we have made it through countless wars, bubbles and other business challenges.

Then there is that last concept which I believe almost all companies need to more effectively communicate - gratitude. And on that note, thanks to the TMC readers, sponsors, advertisers, partners, conference attendees, vendors and team members who have helped us achieve this milestone.

I have heard a number of positive comments regarding the addition of an optical event at ITEXPO this fall. Thanks for all your comments. As I mentioned recently, Lightwave ONE which stands for "Optical Networks for Enterprises" will be collocated with ITEXPO Oct 4-6 2010 in Los Angeles, CA.

As you likely know, we at TMC do our best to ensure we provide the most complete educational experience we can under one roof. There is no other suite of simultaneous shows we know of on the planet with the unique mix of exhibitors and overlapping industries you will see this fall at the show.

You can come to Los Angeles the week of ITEXPO and learn everything you need to about the optical market while also taking in the latest on switching gear, communications, 4G the smart grid, M2M and much more. See the list at the bottom of this post for specifics please.

One of the reasons for this post is I wanted to alert you that the Lightwave ONE conference Web site is now up. Here are some important links and additional facts about the event from the site:

Dates and Times

Speaker List (coming soon)

Sponsorship Opportunities

Optical Exhibit Pass

Lightwave's ONE Conference is a must-attend event for:

Small, Medium and Large Commercial Enterprises: IT/Network Directors and Managers, Data Center and SAN Managers, Communications Directors and Managers, CIOs and Corporate Executives involved in Strategic Planning

Service Providers: IT/Network Directors, Operations Directors, Strategic Planning, Customer Care, Business Development, Regulatory Affairs

Local, State and National Government - IT/Network Directors and Managers, Data Center and SAN Managers, Communications Directors and Managers, Policymakers

Financial, Healthcare, Education and other Specialized Communities: IT/Network Directors and Managers, Data Center and SAN Managers, Communications Directors and Manager

Lightwave's Optical Networks for Enterprises (ONE) Conference is unlike any other communications, networking or optical conference.

LIGHTWAVE's ONE Conference is the only event exclusively focused on real-world optical communications strategies for network owners, managers and service providers. The ONE Conference and Optical Networking Pavilion, collocated with ITEXPO, provide a unique educational and networking opportunity for enterprise and service provider managers who are evaluating, implementing and managing fiber-optic networks.

At Lightwave's ONE Conference, leading strategists, analysts and deployment specialists will reveal how you can use optical communications technology now to cost-effectively meet and prepare for rapidly expanding enterprise bandwidth and service needs. Whether you manage the communication network within an enterprise organization or want to provide the fiber-optic services that power it, this unique conference will help you make the right optical networking technology, architecture and product decisions.

Enterprise, government and service provider organizations are looking for practical solutions to rapidly expanding bandwidth and network cost challenges, and Lightwave's ONE Conference focuses specifically on their needs.
Corporate and government secrets are currently being stolen on a grand scale - can anything be done about it?

If you are one of those people not easily rattled, please have a seat and get ready to shake. A new acronym, APT which stands for Advanced Persistent Threat is on the scene and by many accounts is an online threat which is virtually impossible to detect and even worse eradicate. Once your company is infected it seems hackers have access to virtually any and all information on your network. And once again, there may be nothing you can do about it.

Most of these attacks are launched through social interaction consisting of spear phishing - for example where someone poses as a friend via a social network or email and sends a link which includes code which begins the launching of an exploit. This is exact security flaw by the way which recently hit Google and in that case a vulnerability of Internet Explorer was used to begin the infiltration.

Quite often when a company is hacked, they keep it quiet, not wanting to let the world know about the breach. But it seems according to Wired that thousands of companies have been infected since 2002 and Google is one of the first to go public with such news.

"The scope of this is much larger than anybody has every conveyed," says Kevin Mandia, CEO and president of Virginia-based computer security and forensic firm Mandiant. "There [are] not 50 companies compromised. There are thousands of companies compromised. Actively, right now."

What you need to know about APT attacks is that they are different than typical exploits which may be targeting credit card information. Advanced Persistent Threats are designed for long-term espionage - siphoning off Microsoft Office files and PDFs. The files are aggregated and stored on your network and then combined into larger files which are then sliced into small files which are encrypted and sent in bursts to servers which are typically in China.

Defense companies, government agencies and oil companies have been hit and another target which may not seem surprising are companies doing business in China - especially law firms. In one case, a company negotiating to purchase a company in China was infiltrated and information pertaining to the negotiations was stolen by a company inside China. As you may have guessed, this information, once discovered -- killed the deal.

According to the Christian Science Monitor:

In this new scenario, a single piece of malware often has multiple characteristics. Its digital signatures can morph to evade detection. At the same time, it can spin off decoys intended to be caught to make it appear as if an attack has been thwarted.

More than half of the 600 IT managers operating critical infrastructure in 14 countries reported being recently hit by "high-level" adversaries such as organized crime, terrorists or nation states, according to a new global survey of information technology executives by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington late last month.

A majority of the group hit, 59 percent, said they thought their computer networks and controls systems were under "repeated cyberattack, often from high-level adversaries like foreign nation-states."

US Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair's comments might be news to the Senate, but cybersecurity experts face these threats daily. The "persistent" threat he referred to, for instance, is known widely as the "Advanced Persistent Threat" or APT within the security community. It's also shorthand for state-sponsored "foreign intelligence" operations and sometimes just "China."

"These are not 'slash-and-grab jobs'," says Rob Lee, a director at Mandiant, a leading cyber security firm. "The goal of the intruder is to occupy the network. These are professionals, not people doing this at night. This is someone's full-time job from the initial breach to lateral movement across the network, the actual occupation, then the exfiltration of data - there are clear lines of responsibility between different actors going on."

According to Mr. Lee and other experts, the common thread in the APT is connected to China. Among 40-45 very sophisticated attacks in the past year, about two-thirds were "China related," he said.

Shawn Carpenter, principal forensics analyst at NetWitness Corporation, concurs. He says that in a number of cases he has traced malware code back to Chinese hacker sites and to Chinese character sets in software compilers used to create the code. "You can put together some pretty compelling links that trace their way back to China," he says.

Representatives of the Chinese Embassy regularly rebut such criticisms, as they did with a Monitor report last month on cyber attacks targeting the US oil and gas industries.
InformationWeek recently interviewed IT security firm MANDIANT who describes an APT attack as follows:

Phase 1, Reconnaissance: Attackers will watch and take notes on who in an organization they need to target, from administrative assistants to executives. Much of this information is gleaned from public Web sites.

Phase 2, The Initial Breach: They will use spear-phishing attacks to send those identified targets an attachment with an exploit that can be used to hijack the target's system. Any personal information the attacker knows about the source will be used to entice the target user to open the attachment.

Phase 3, Get a Network Backdoor: MANDIANT says the attackers will do what they can to get network administrative credentials. And they will also implant malware (that they centrally control) designed to avoid detection. These will be used to gain further access to more of the victim company's infrastructure.

Phase 4, Grab User Credentials: These credentials are used to log-on to end point systems, and siphon data. MANDIANT said the typical victim organization it studied has 40 systems compromised: some had more than 150.

Phase 5, install attack utilities: Now the network is being peppered with backdoors, tools to grab passwords, steal emails, and footprint the network.

Phase 6, Data Ex-filtration: Continuing to move about the infected network and increasing access rights to more sensitive systems, the attackers are now compressing stolen data - imagine anything from financial data, marketing plans, research and development information - and transferring that information to an external server under the attackers control.

Phase 7, Maintain Persistence: The rest is a cat and mouse game: as the organization cleans and updates systems, the attackers establish additional footholds.

If there is any good news to be found on the matter it may be that the above mentioned company NetWitness has received a US Patent for network analysis which may be helpful in detecting and preventing APT attacks. According to TMCnet:

The new patent is a development over its currently held patent NetWitness' method of capture, reassembly, port-agnostic service identification, and recursive data extraction, covering all the essentials for network and application layer network forensics. The patent applied for in 2002 defends a core investigative technology in the NetWitness NextGen product suite, and stresses on the exclusive method in which NetWitness models and systematizes the captured network data.

As voice, video and fax all ride over IP networks, there is absolutely no reason why these attacks can't target these mediums meaning video calls between the CEO and the board can be captured. Phone calls, voicemails, contracts... Everything on the network is at risk.

Now that the extent of the problem is being made public I hope that global governments get involved and create harsh penalties for countries caught in wide scale corporate espionage. Moreover, the opportunity for security and vendors seems enormous - one would imagine security experts are salivating at the potential profits they can make from helping companies and governments secure their vital information.

I received an email today from Richard Herman, co-author of "Immigrant, Inc. --- Why Immigrant Entrepreneurs Are Driving the New Economy (and how they will save the American worker)."

I asked to accept it as a guest blog and received permission to do so. Why?

Because I believe we need more immigrants to stay in the US and start businesses. The media company I am now the CEO of is here because a single student - my father -- was allowed in the country in 1957. It is worth noting he was not only allowed in but allowed to stay. As I wrote recently on the topic of reductions in US patents:

Perhaps the best part of the article is the quote from Mark Chandler, general counsel of Cisco Systems when referring to the US system of allowing the best and brightest from around the world to be educated in the US and then forced to leave the country, "We're forcing these people to do their productive work elsewhere. They should have a green card stapled to their admittance letter."

Here is an important comment I made in the article:

What should be done? The government should allow in- even court the best and brightest students from around the world - have them educated and then give them grants to start companies in the US. We should overhaul our immigration system, allowing the smartest and most productive citizens of the world easy access to jobs and opportunities in the US.

Every day it seems I learn about new companies founded by immigrants. In most every case they are employing US citizens. Perhaps my viewpoint would be different if unemployment was around 1% or less but since we are far from there at 10% and growing, it is time to get assistance from the best and brightest in the world.

This is what has made America great up until this point and what will continue to help us as the world becomes more global.

This is what Richard Herman has to say:

--

I remember appearing on Fox's television show "The O'Reilly Factor" a couple of years ago to discuss immigration reform with guest host Michelle Malkin. As you can guess, Michelle quickly abandoned a conversational tone and erupted into a frenzied scream on how immigration is destroying America.

I also remember receiving death threats after the show, from viewers who called me to say things like: "all 100 million saw you on TV, and the revolution is on."

I don't think Michelle (whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from the Philippines in the 1960s as the result of the Immigration Act of 1965, immigration reform that more widely opened the American door to Asians and other non-Europeans) will like the new book I co-wrote with journalist Robert L. Smith, titled "Immigrant, Inc. --- Why Immigrant Entrepreneurs Are Driving the New Economy (and how they will save the American worker)" (John Wiley, November, 2009).

While I hoped a few might like this read of immigrant success stories intertwined with groundbreaking research, I didn't anticipate that the book would garner such glowing reviews and attention as referenced below.

In his review, Neal Peirce of The Washington Post Writers Group calls the book "audacious." Peirce writes that "the mere fact that immigrants are an asset, not a liability, puts a whole new face on the Lou Dobbs-style attacks on America's 12 million undocumented immigrants that CNN so longer tolerated, and right-wing media still promote." Peirce supports the book's message that welcoming immigrant innovators and entrepreneurs is "a virtually guaranteed stimulus to our economy and to our creative capacity for this century." Hard to do with the current immigration system, which reserves only 9% of the coveted "green cards" for highly-skilled or investor immigrants. Due to the paltry number of available green cards and the resulting years' wait to get one, more and more super talent is leaving the U.S. or deciding not to come in the first place.

In his review, Ira Stoll, editor of Future of Capitalism and author of "Samuel Adams: A LIfe" writes that the immigrant success stories "are compellingly told in this book." Stoll also found that the book uncovered a unique angle on the formation of Google. "Somehow, even with all the books out there on the company's success, most Google users probably don't realize that the involvement of immigrants in the company's success is so extensive." An interview with the parents of Google co-founder, Sergey Brin, also give the reader a new perspective on how America's welcoming of refugees has changed the world.

India's Businessworld magazine says that Imimigrant, Inc. goes "beyond praising talented immigrant entrepreneurs to explore their mindsets, cultural specificities, and their high level of determination and innovative thinking....suggesting how Americans need to tap their 'inner immigrant' to succeed."

The Akron Beacon Journal says that the authors "embarked on a mission to explore the data on immigration and open the eyes of a country they viewed as growing more insular since 9/11."

The book is also generating the type of controversy that I first tasted after my appearance on "The O'Reilly Factor." As indicated in the posts to some of the articles below, the nativists insist on spreading a message of xenophobia and of perpetuating antiquated high-skill immigration policies that continue to tie at least one hand behind America's back as she faces fierce overseas competition in the innovation and job-creating game. As my quote in Forbes suggests, "Americans are having a tough time dealing with global diversity."

Congress and the President are expected to tackle immigration reform in early 2010. Let's hope that we can find a way to free the immigrant job-creators.

For reviews and prominent mentions of "Immigrant, Inc." see:

"Skilled Immigrants: The Stimulus We Need?" by Neal Peirce, The Washington Post Writers Group, Chair of CitiStates, December 27, 2009

"Book Explores Immigrants' Role in U.S. Economy (Cleveland authors write that highly skilled foreign-born entrepreneurs bring vitality but Northeast Ohio isn't doing enough to welcome them)" by Paula Schleis, Akron Beacon Journal, December 28, 2009

Review, by Ira Stoll, Editor, Future of Capitalism

"Eight Indian CEOs at Big U.S. Companies (a scan of America's corproation shows the ethnic group's growing presence)" by Megha Bahree, Forbes, Decembe 21, 2009

"Let's Give Visas to Startup Founders (Instead of Encouraging the first brain drain in U.S. history, the country should create a program to welcome funded startup entrepreneurs)" by Vivek Wadhwa, BusinessWeek, December 2, 2009

"Immigrant Entrepreneurs Spark Illinois Economy Through Startups, Innovation," by Dee Gill, Crain's Chicago Business, December 14, 2009

"Immigrant, Inc. ---- The authors emphasize how Americas need to tap their 'inner immigrant' in order to succeed" Businessworld, November 14, 2009

"Eight months on, U.S. finally fills H1B visa quota," by Anirudh Bhattacharyya, Hindustan Times, December 23, 2009

"A Prize Worth Pursuing," by Lute Harmon, Publishder, Inside Business Magazine, November, 2009

"Investing in Immigration," by Dan Moulthrop, Sound of Ideas, WCPN, 90.3 Radio, NPR/Cleveland

The book was honored as a winner of the prestigious 2009 Small Business Book "Readers' Choice Award."

<meta content="text/html;

During the dotcom boom I launched a company called Infofill whose goal it was to help companies who needed content for their Web sites. As I envisioned it, every company needed to become a media company and as such needed articles, audio and eventually TV studios.

As the bubble burst, the idea morphed into over 120 sponsored news-powered channels and communities which are a major factor in the success of TMC and TMCnet.

Interestingly I turned the dotcom idea inside out to make it work and now, many companies have chosen to partner with TMC for a number of reasons such as having access to content producers, designers, SEO experts, analytics professionals and more importantly, many of our customers want to leverage the proprietary content management system we have built to optimize content dissemination to the most interested audience possible.

I had a moment of déjà vu as I read an article from Steve Vonder Haar, Research Director and Founder, Interactive Media Strategies. Steve's company has partnered with TMCnet to build content focusing on business video. We built an industry site in fact which disseminates information via articles and unsurprisingly videos.

This is how the Business Video Industry Site looks on TMCnet

By the way, an industry site could potentially have its own channels and Global Online Communities -- meaning for example someone could sponsor a mobile video channel or perhaps a video production or streaming community.

It goes without saying that virtually all Web sites will leverage video to communicate with customers and the growth rates of video will continue to boggle the mind.

To quote Steve:

Simply put, video is going to be huge. And I don't mean huge in the "Google (News - Alert) buys YouTube" sense. Rather, think more about a "huge" that implies a pervasive presence over time for video in every digital venue you can imagine. Think about an era of video ubiquity.

In our research at Interactive Media Strategies, we have developed a fundamental belief that video will evolve into a type of data that can be integrated into every software application you use and every Web site you visit.

And this means more than just using YouTube (News - Alert) to tap into a late-night comedy skit or home family video blooper. That's kid's stuff. Rather, video adoption heralds a new age of digital development that is serious business.

Just as sites disseminate the written word via blogs, audio via podcasts and PowerPoints via webcasts, the next step is video. The modes of communications continue to mount and as they do companies have to figure out what blend of technologies is ideal in their case.

Rest assured however that as the world gets more complicated the difference between winners and losers in many markets will be levels of marketing prowess coupled with effective online communications. What do you need to be aware of? Some areas include Twitter, Linkedin, email newsletters/marketing, telephone marketing, Facebook, podcasts, SEO, community building, blogs, webinars, trade shows, banner ads, splash pages, event marketing, video, and traditional and new forms of advertising... It's no wonder most marketing departments have surgically implanted ball bearings into their necks so their heads can rotate freely.

In order to assist forward-thinking companies, TMC and Interactive Media Strategies are devoting our resources to produce serious and important content in the business video space so you may start reading and watching now to keep up.

It took ten years for the market to catch up to where I hoped it would be someday and I am thankful for your loyalty to TMC and our partners over the decades - always following us via print publications, live events and now online communities and industry sites.

ITEXPO hotel rooms continue to go quickly. 11 days ago I mentioned that the hotel room block at the Loews was sold out at 106% and you needed to reserve a room quickly to get the low rate ITEXPO had negotiated. After returning from the holidays I was informed the hotel is now sold out at 131% and this news came accompanied with this message from the hotel.

Sorry for the late notice, but we will not be able to accommodate any new reservations at the ITEXPO group rate. I would have given you more notice but it drastically picked up very rapidly.

Grammar aside, you can still call the hotel and try to get a room at the $249/night rate - perhaps you can be persuasive. The more common option is to just contact the DoubleTree Surfcomber (this generally includes an oven-fresh cookie ) Here are more details:

Group Code - ONE

Central Reservations: 1-800-853-0264

Online Booking

Rate - $179.00

Cutoff Date - January 4, 2010 (or until the block is gone and/or the hotel is sold out)

Airfares to Miami Under $150!

In addition to the discount on your hotel room, you can also take advantage of amazingly low airfares to Miami from around the U.S. Round trip fares from cities like Boston, New York, Charlotte, St. Louis, Chicago, Atlanta, D.C., and Buffalo are less than $200 - some less than $150. Fares from Dallas are less than $225.

Specifics from Travelocity (does not include fees):

Chicago: 178

Charlotte: 188

Buffalo: 118

Atlanta: 178

St. Louis: 134

New York: 164

Boston: 178

LA: 150

DC: 154

Dallas: 214

Minneapolis: 243

San Fran: 236

San Jose: 199

I hope to see you at the show and remember - as I said last week in my post about Startup Camp telephony:

By bringing together a wide swath of the communications and technology markets at one time and place - in association with ITEXPO we provide you with an unprecedented opportunity to learn about the entire market and network with more relevant people than at any other show. This includes spaces such as 4G, M2M, smart grid, open source telephony/Asterisk, cloud communications, virtualization, SIP trunking, VAR/channel opportunities and more.

See you at the show January 20-22, 2009!

We love startups - as a society we owe them more and more each day. The contributions of Apple, WalMart, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Intel, etc. Most companies which were not spinoffs started life as tiny babies in the enterprise pediatric ward.

In order to honor these startups and support new ones - giving them the exposure they need to get to the next level, TMC has launched in conjunction with Embrase/Larry Lisser an event called StartUp Camp Telephony. Expect this conference to give startups the exposure they need to the media, analysts, bloggers and investors. This in turn helps them get recognized by a much broader audience.

You may apply to present here.

Companies applying so far include: Aksys Networks, Dinsk, LLP, Call Loop LLC, Cloudvox, SecureNFC Inc., Unixbox, Zipano Technologies, MojoUSA, Inc and SayHired.

I don't need to hype the telecom market and its growth opportunities - some organizations like Skype have been purchased twice this decade -- and both times for more money than most people expected. Most recently for $2.75 billion. Tandberg was sold to Cisco for a premium which was greater than originally expected at $3.4 billion. In addition, the networking giant picked up Starent Networks a short while back for $2.9 billion and isn't done.

Not to be left out, Google purchased VoIP provider Gizmo5 just last month - an inference/suggestion made by blogger Andy Abramson.

Perhaps you have noticed a theme here -- if not -- here it is -- telecom companies are hot -- on fire and even though I said this market didn't need hyping -- arent we in a great depression? Look at these numbers. Communications and tech have got to be some of the best places to be -- period.

Speaking of Andy, he has a nice post discussing all the reasons you need to be at ITEXPO, January 20-22, 2009 in Miami. Thanks Andy.

I can tell you sincerely, we have worked day and night to make sure this show has more relevant content than any other we have ever produced. How? We are constantly working on partnerships with people we believe are experts in disseminating useful information in their respective fields. We believe this is the absolute best way to increase the value of our community building products such as live events.

So with that, please have a Happy Holiday Season and New Year and be sure to make plans to be in Miami in January. I look forward to seeing you there.

Leveraging Ecosystems Eclipses Developing Products

Widgets for TVs, application stores for wireless phones, applets for the connected home and automobiles... The trend is clear as smart ecosystems have emerged on the scene as a new way to generate revenue while locking in customers to specific hardware/software solutions. For many manufacturers such as Avaya, Cisco, RIM, Nokia, Apple and makers of televisions, it is no longer adequate to focus exclusively on the products your company develops. Now you have to figure out how to build a smart ecosystem around your offerings in order to leverage an able and willing (hardware and software) developer community who will evangelize your platform and develop long-tail applications, services and add-ons which boost the value of your ecosystem.

In order to help educate the emerging smart ecosystem community, TMC has partnered with Crossfire Media and distinguished college professor Mary Cronin PhD to launch a smart ecosystem portal containing news, thought leadership and analysis called SPEC which stands for Smart Product Ecosystems Connection and located at www.specosys.com.

As you may recall, Crossfire Media is home to Carl Ford and together we have already partnered to build online and live communities (4GWE and M2M Summit) in the 4G and M2M spaces.

This partnership also includes Mary Cronin, a professor in the Information Systems Department of Boston College's Carroll School of Management. Mary is a true thought leader in the space and you can expect to hear her prescient thoughts on how ecosystems will take root and evolve. Her first article is titled Five Rules for Smart Product Ecosystems.

The coverage areas will extend into a variety of industries and for now they include Telecom & Mobile; Health & Medical; Automotive & Telematics; Home Automation and Connected Home Entertainment Devices; Energy Monitoring and Personal Energy Management Solutions. We are open to adding new areas so drop us a line with suggestions.

It is evident that as time goes on, companies in all industries will be looking to tie their products and services into more and more ecosystems. They will either develop their own and/or leverage others on the market. In order to stay up to date on the investment, partnering and other opportunities ahead, be sure to bookmark the new SPEC smart ecosystem site and check back often.

Companies have spent hundreds of millions of dollars over the decades to ensure their contact centers are as efficient as possible. In a business where you have hundreds of agents in a call center you have to worry about any excess spending and you must minimize waste. Calling queues and skills-based routing are just some of the simple technologies call centers have used for decades to efficiently connect the right agent with a caller. Amazingly, the average healthcare worker makes 2-5 times as much as the average call center agent and we don't spend the money to automate healthcare processes the way we have in the contact center. Obviously hospitals use technology but their processes can be automated the way ACDs and predictive dialers have automated the contact center.

There is a tremendous opportunity to automate healthcare through unified communications and other related technologies and Nortel is one of the companies looking to seize this market. I recently visited the company's corporate campus and saw a demo of their solutions in action and yesterday I had a chance to speak with Wes Durow, VP Nortel Enterprise Solutions about how his company is helping hospitals and municipalities with their healthcare automation needs.

Have a listen.

What I have noticed is the service is improving and aside from occasional glitches, surfing the web on an Apple iPhone 3Gs is a more pleasant experience. I don't think it approaches Verizon Wireless yet but then again, VZW doesn't have to deal with the onslaught of wireless data requests generated from legions of iPhone users. AT&T has an opportunity of a lifetime to upgrade its network before it loses iPhone exclusivity (assuming it does).

To say the company is rushing to improve its service would be an understatement - in fact it is doubling its data speed through the use of HSPA in six cities -- Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami and Charlotte. This is great news as the next ITEXPO and - East 2010 and the collocated 4G Wireless Evolution will take place in Miami this January and these upgrades should be in place by year's end. I am looking forward to testing the service out then.

Sir Terry Matthews gave a fascinating keynote address today to a standing room only crowd at TMC's ITEXPO and started his address by discussing the opportunity he sees in the communications and technology markets. You know from my past writing that I consider Terry to be one of the most incredible people I have met - he has started 89 companies primarily in communications. He has also started companies in the leisure space - hotels and golf resorts.

He is worth billions and he still works as hard as anyone I know. He travels the world and closes business. He actually said selling things turns him on. It shows - the companies he has started are some of the most successful around. I hope to have a fraction of his energy at his age.

Based upon the crowd here at his address and the focus by audience members on every word Terry is saying, it seems we picked a great keynoter for this event. Here is a clip of Terry speaking and the crowd shot of who was there.
