TMC Gets Written up in Norwalk Hour Newspaper

June 4, 2010

I am fortunate that I get to speak reporters about my company from time to time and whenever I do I always worry until the article comes out. Reporters are busy (speaking from experience) and they don't always get all the facts right. I always blame myself when this happens - after all if you communicate in a clear, concise manner with an organized, structured system of segueing between topics, it is much easier to follow.

Personally I have sat in briefings with charismatic tech leaders who spend 30 minutes talking and when I look at my notes, I wonder what the heck was said.

Open Source, Cloud Computing and Ecosystems Changing VC Investments

May 24, 2010

The world of investing is changing as startup costs are plummeting for companies who are able to use open-source software and cloud computing tools while in many cases piggybacking on existing product ecosystems as they grow. As Bloomberg reports in an article I found through GigaOm, tech startups need much less money because they aren't using the expensive computers their "ancestors" used.

Hosted storage, hosted software, open-source and the lower price of office rental space means there can be many more startups per dollar. The downside for VC funds is you can't put a billion dollars to work $500,000 at a time.

TMC Celebrates 38-Year Anniversary

May 24, 2010

How do companies make it through gut-wrenching industry and technological change without going under?

I do my best to wish every TMC a team member a Happy TMC Anniversary and as such the start date of all of our full-time members are in my calendar so I can be the one to send them this greeting (If I forgot you in the past - please accept my apologies). Last week I noticed that it was the anniversary of Nadji Tehrani, the company Founder & Chairman, my father and the person who decided to start this company in 1972. Funny, I never noticed his start date on my calendar before - and it occurred to me that this was TMC's 38-year anniversary.

Lightwave ONE Web Conference site now up

May 22, 2010

I have heard a number of positive comments regarding the addition of an optical event at ITEXPO this fall. Thanks for all your comments. As I mentioned recently, Lightwave ONE which stands for "Optical Networks for Enterprises" will be collocated with ITEXPO Oct 4-6 2010 in Los Angeles, CA.

As you likely know, we at TMC do our best to ensure we provide the most complete educational experience we can under one roof.

How Smart Products can Transform Health Care

May 22, 2010

Smart health systems have the potential to transform healtchare and weight-loss in a similar manner to the way electronic spreadsheets transformed corporate analysis and boosted the bottom line

One of the largest shifts in technology which has silently grown in importance in the world of electronics and technology is that of the product ecosystem - the group of smart products which interact with one another to provide a collective solution much more powerful, adaptable and flexible than any particular component of the ecosystem.

If you haven't kept up with the Smart Product Ecosystem or SPEC site on TMCnet, please do as this is the best place I know of to keep up with the market and its evolution. There are some fascinating stories I just received in this week's SPEC enewsletter (subscribe) and I will focus on the first one as you are free to check out the others at your leisure.

The first story from Professor Mary Cronin discusses MetaLogics, a company that developed a sensor to determine accurate caloric expenditure.

Google Buys GIPS - Here's Why

May 18, 2010

When it comes to enabling technology, Google's new mantra is its better to be needed than liked

I first met the company called Global IP Sound around 2002 at TMC's ITEXPO and Pulvermedia's VON expos. What differentiated the company tome at first was the company's ability to power wireless VoIP calls over PDAs - specifically Compaq iPAQs via a low-bandwidth codec. As you can imagine, at the time, the codec needed to not only be low-bandwidth due to the slow wireless connections but also had to be super-optimized because processors in PDAs at the time were not powerful.

Apple Pages for iPad Gets Update

May 14, 2010

I spent yesterday morning in New York talking with Ooma and I decided to take only my iPad to the meeting. Normally you know me as the buy who lugs a bag full of gadgets, chargers and batteries everywhere I go. My Dell laptop has that extra battery attached to the bottom and if I had to I could get nine hours of life out of it. Moreover I have probably logged as many miles on the wheels of my laptop case as I have on American Airlines.

Cloud Computing Unleashes Creativity

May 2, 2010

Recently at Cloud Expo in New York I caught up with Duke Skarda the Vice President, Information Technology and Software Development at The Planet and learned about his company's Infrastructure as a Service business targeting companies who have hardened websites which need to be up 24x7. He explained how his company believes many customers want a blend of cloud and premise-based solutions.

In the above video Skarda explains a growing part of his business is experimental projects where companies hope for the best but plan for the worst by utilizing cloud-based infrastructure to ensure they have resiliency of an always-on network without the CAPEX of doing it yourself. The ability to quickly scale an application at a fraction of the cost of owning all the equipment yourself means companies can experiment with services in ways not possible in the past.

Interop News and Information Technology Site on TMCnet

April 20, 2010

As I head to the Cloud Expo show today I thought it made sense to make sure my readers are aware of two important TMC sites which you may want to bookmark to stay current with important news of the day. The first is our InfoTech Spotlight site which will keep you up to date on the world of information technology. An easy way to remember the url is just to use the initials IT instead of WWW in the TMCnet domain name or it.tmcnet.com.

Another important one is our Interop news site which has a domain name which is not as easy to memorize so you can just search for it or bookmark the link. I hope you find them both useful.
