Many M2M devices need to be securely and persistently connected over a variety of transports such as satellite, WiFi, LTE, etc. Increased persistence can increase pressure on security as the longer devices are connected, the greater the chance of them getting hacked. In addition, staying on all the time means a larger battery drain.

Comtech Boosts Location and Analytics in IoT

Telecommunication’s big differentiator in the IoT space has to do with its Location Studio IoT. The company has been a leader in the space for decades thanks to its acquisition of TCS – a company who also was a leader in indoor LBS going back to our earliest meetings with the company in the nineties.

Fast-forward to 2017 and location is becoming crucial for numerous applications on cell phones but also for asset tracking, customer service and numerous other applications being developed.



We had a chance to discuss the company’s vision with Jay Whitehurst (above) and Fred Servais (below) who mentioned the company’s SDK has the following features:

The way the system works is to send whatever information the device has available to it and Comtech uses the cloud to determine where the device is located.


ORBCOMM Looks to Become Complete IoT Solutions Service Provider

One of the topics discussed often among communications service providers is whether they want to be relegated to dumb pipes or they want to add services and increase the value of their offerings. The latter idea generally wins out and the concept also applies to satellite providers like ORBCOMM. I recently sat down to talk about the company with Sue Rutherford, VP of Marketing and we discussed how the organization has evolved by adding transportation management expertise through acquisitions.



The goal of the company is to become a solutions service provider, covering all parts of the IoT ecosystem.

Iridium Doubles-Down on IoT Support, Faster Connections

“If you have a coverage map, you aren’t global,” said Tim Last, VP & GM M2M Business at Iridium when I asked why the company’s M2M/IoT business was growing so fast. The company’s customers span most major markets such as enterprise, industrial, government, maritime, aviation, fleet management, asset tracking, environment and Cathodic protection or pipelines. The company’s satellite–based solutions help industries that have global assets which need tracking.




He also showed me the new Iridium Edge (coming soon), a solution which is like a fixed-site telemetry device – it can be used for secondary connectivity to back up cellular.

Why I'm Neutral on the Comcast, Time Warner Cable Deal

There has been lots of controversy over the merging of two of the largest cable companies Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Concerns range from fear of a monopoly to worse customer service to higher fees and data caps. Jim Edwards at Business Insider for example says you will get screwed if the merger goes through.

Consumers Union thinks if the merger happens, prices will increase and service will suffer.

Google and Dish Were in Talks to Launch Wireless Biz

Some time back I commented on rumors of a Sprint takeover by Google and at the time many thought the idea was crazy. Fast forward a few years, tens of thousands of Android devices and a Motorola Mobility acquisition later and now Google is reportedly in talks to launch a wireless service with a number of companies including Dish Networks. As you may recall, Steve Jobs too wanted to launch a wireless network and if Google is seriously exploring this option this means Apple has to be doing the same.

The next frontier of advertising revenue for Google is mobile and if carriers and Apple decide to lock the company out of this lucrative market (even partially), then they have no choice but to own the wireless pipes.

After all, devices are becoming far more powerful and quad-core tablets and smartphones could become the norm by the middle of next year if not sooner. Recently I was emailing with one of my contacts at Verizon asking what the hot devices are from his perspective and during our conversation I mentioned I have Verizon 3G in my laptop but haven’t had a chance to try Verizon 4G. Without a beat he offered me a 4G MiFi Mobile Hotspot to test and review. It’s funny really, I am not starved for connectivity but this device made my business life much easier… It is an essential device for the cloud-based world we are moving to. After all, if all your apps live somewhere else and you don’t have the best connectivity possible, you really aren’t able to leverage the cloud.

Why Blocked AT&T, T-Mobile USA Deal is Good for Growth

Critics might say, in the history of M&A, it is difficult to recall one instance where more jobs were created as a result of two companies coming together. Yet this is the argument AT&T has been making for just less than three months after the merger announcement with AT&T and T-Mobile USA was announced. In part the argument was reinforced by the company's commitment to bring remote call center jobs back to the states.

Moreover, AT&T’s claim that this merger would be good for consumers is an interesting one as critics might say it is fairly easy to argue either side.
