Interviews With ITEXPO East 2010 Participants

January 13, 2010

Next week's ITEXPO, Jan 20-22nd in Miami promises to be one of the best shows in the communications and technology spaces. When you consider all the knowledge you can absorb at the show with collocated events which portend the future - you just have to be there.

The opportunity to save money on communications, find new products to help you make money and/or boost productivity... The chance to launch a new career and network with the best and brightest - there are many reasons to be in south Florida at ITEXPO and related events: 4G Wireless Evolution -- Digium/Asterisk World -- Smart Grid Summit -- M2M Evolution -- Cloud Communications Summit -- Virtualization Summit -- StartUp Camp Telephony -- SIP Tutorial.

To give you an idea of the sorts of people you can meet at the show and network with, you are welcome to check out the interviews I conducted with a number of the show's participants below:

Today we sent out a confirmation and update regarding next week's ITEXPO and I wanted to make sure my readers were aware of many of the happenings at the show. One of the more interesting questions I get in passing is - "Rich, are you still giving away a car at the show?" The answer is yes, a Honda Element and also a Honda motorcycle.

Will Silicon Valley go to War with China?

January 12, 2010

To protect the privacy of its users and data, will Google really pull out of the country?

A major challenge for all companies doing business with china is how to you gain access to the huge market of over a billion customers without signing away your crown jewels. Many companies reluctantly have signed over their intellectual property in exchange for being able to compete in the market. At a breakfast I attended some time back, Jack Welch mentioned this was something GE had to do to gain access the mainland.

Flash on Google Nexus One Makes App Store Battle Moot

January 6, 2010

Flash Player 10.1 + Google Nexus One = Mobile Flash = Infinite Apps

Although Apple's iPhone does a great job approximating a PC-based browsing experience on the go, lack of Flash support which one past high level Adobe employee blames 100% on Apple, really makes the phone a lot less useful than it could be. I spent a good deal of time writing about how lack of Flash support is the real Apple tax and I still contend that because Flash does not run on the iPhone, many Web sites need to do double design and programming work.

In other words, a site which uses Flash needs to have yet another set of pages or sites designed so an iPhone can see what is happening.

Google, Apple set for Death Match

January 5, 2010

Like a Godzilla movie with award-winning special effects, this battle will open up new opportunities for players in the communications market deep into the decade.

Apple recently announced it has had over three billion applications downloaded on the iPhone and iPod Touch and has further purchased mobile advertising company Quattro Wireless for $300 bmillion. If you have followed Apple, you know this move is not surprising. Last November in fact I wrote about how Google is scaring Apple to death as evidenced by Apple filing a patent in the advertising space and reportedly bidding for Admob.

Tech Lubricates Theft, Can it do so For Law Enforcement?

December 31, 2009

The Internet is an incredible lubricator and margin compression resulting from immediate and widespread information dissemination is destroying industries on a level never before experienced. Examples include the newspaper business which has seen classified ad revenue jump to Monster and Craigslist. And in display advertising, newspapers are losing business to search engine and other online ad locations.

Once, pawn shops were a primary place for thieves to take stolen products but the criminals soon realized auctions are the best way to get the maximum price for goods.

How Immigrants Can Help Employ US Workers

December 28, 2009

I received an email today from Richard Herman, co-author of "Immigrant, Inc. --- Why Immigrant Entrepreneurs Are Driving the New Economy (and how they will save the American worker)."

I asked to accept it as a guest blog and received permission to do so. Why?

Because I believe we need more immigrants to stay in the US and start businesses.

ITEXPO East 2010 Hotel Block 131% Sold Out

December 28, 2009

ITEXPO hotel rooms continue to go quickly. 11 days ago I mentioned that the hotel room block at the Loews was sold out at 106% and you needed to reserve a room quickly to get the low rate ITEXPO had negotiated. After returning from the holidays I was informed the hotel is now sold out at 131% and this news came accompanied with this message from the hotel.

Sorry for the late notice, but we will not be able to accommodate any new reservations at the ITEXPO group rate.
