Competing Effectively in a Facebook and Google World

March 9, 2011

With a sky-high valuation over $70B Facebook has to be super-aggressive to ensure they can support a valuation which seems to grow by the tens of billions every few months. And with the ability to hire some of the best and brightest engineers it is obvious the company should be exploring a range of new ways to justify its lofty valuation which is worth about 75% of Cisco Systems.

This past January I listed the 11 Things Facebook Should Do With Their New $1.5B and number two on the list was competing with iTunes/Netflix.  Specifically, this is what I said:

Build Online Communities With Adonis DNA

March 7, 2011

You gotta love Charlie Sheen - and after hearing him talk about his Adonis DNA - I realized, Hey... TMC has building hundreds of communities for customers over the past decade that also have Adonis DNA  . They aren't "tiger blood" perfect mind you but the millions of dollars we have invested in technology to connect the right buyers with the right content seems to be paying off nicely for TMC customers looking for branding, thought-leadership and leads.

This investment has in-turn yielded millions of readers who come to TMCnet each month and benefit from these communities which provide information on diverse topics from headsets and disk defragmentation to network monitoring and cloud computing.

We believe we have the largest collection of monthly sponsored communities on the Internet and if that doesn't elevate our DNA to godlike levels, we aren't quite sure what else we need to do.

Perhaps this is why a popular question we get at TMC is how do I build a viral, content generated community of my own?

Is Facebook Becoming the Internet?

March 1, 2011

In the past, I have discussed the concept of splinternet (a term Forrester researchers say I may have invented) - where the Internet splinters into app stores and websites such as Facebook - a world where developers have to constantly spend their time optimizing their content for platform after platform.

For example to be a successful developer today you have to build an iPhone app as well as one for Android and Blackberry. Then perhaps a PC app, a Mac app, a web version, a Facebook app and perhaps a version for gaming consoles such as Xbox and you should consider building a widget for a number of the TV manufacturers out there.

But as Facebook has grown in power and influence, it is becoming a more important slice of the pie and as such developers are looking to it as a platform to start developing on first. Certainly Zynga - the company behind Facebook games such as FarmVille and CityVille being worth about $10B hasn't put a dent in this idea.

But it isn't just the developers moving to Facebook, one newspaper, Rockville Central has decided to move all of its content to the social networking site and it will cease putting fresh content on its own site entirely.

Erik Ledbetter a Facebook user was a bit concerned about the move mentioning he uses facebook but doesn't like to have a news source intertwined with his friend updates because his mental space is now being intruded upon. This is an interesting point because I have a mix of friends, relatives and business contacts on the social networking site and I generally post mostly work-related content - meaning my non-work connections have to deal with the same issue each day.

Socializing Search

February 25, 2011

In the last few weeks there have been a higher than usual amount of articles on search quality where mainstream media sources have shined a bright light on companies who are achieving high levels of search rank using methods which could be questionable. A small eyeglass manufacturer for example actually provided poor customer service seemingly on purpose so the company could benefit from a higher perceived search rank as a result of negative comments from customers.

In another case, J.C. Penny was using an outside SEO company to place links on low quality pages all over the web and when the New York Times wrote an article about it, Google scrambled to penalize the company's results. Then Overstock made headlines when it was learned it offered discounts to colleges while encouraging them to post links back to the company.

The point here is fairly obvious...

Building Communities Online: Boost Sales, Search and Social Initiatives

February 22, 2011

Over the past decade, hundreds of companies have benefitted from TMC’s Community program, attracting a laser-targeted group of potential customers who are looking to learn about a specific topic area. TMC populates these communities with thousands of articles per quarter – which in turn attracts millions of interested viewers a year to our sponsors.

Sponsors can then offer these viewers more information about themselves – offer them coupons, a chance to visit them at a trade show or road show or whatever else they are looking to communicate to this group.

The most common question I am asked lately is how to build online communities and moreover companies in many new industries ask constantly about how TMC can help build these content-generated microsites for them.

Electronic Warfare is the Future. Are You Ready?

February 14, 2011

Stuxnet is Victory at Entebbe 2.0

The Stuxnet worm alleged to be the work of Israel and the US was designed to target and disable Iranian centrifuges by increasing their speeds to dangerous levels while reporting to operators that all was well. The latest report from the New York Times shows this worm has also hit five industrial sites in the land of Ahmadinejad.

It’s no secret most of the world does not want Iran to get nuclear weapons and the best weapon being used to deter the country’s nuclear program was sanctions and if they are working it would be tough to know it as the country are prospering greatly as the price of oil is much higher than what Iran has budgeted.

Facebook Ad Connect Coming Soon?

January 26, 2011

Last week I detailed 11 things Facebook needs to do with their $1.5B but in terms of rapid revenue production the #1 item on the list should have been developing a Google Adsense competitor. In the last year or so Google has modified how it shows ads, taking into account search behavior before presenting an offer. This can lead to some interesting side-effects. For example, when I was in a meeting with a prominent company in the communications space, someone asked me why an ad for dresses is showing on TMCnet - I had to explain how Google uses past search behavior to show ads.

ITEXPO Hashtag is #ITEXPO, Receptions and More

January 23, 2011

Good evening readers,

Just a note to let you know the hashtag for ITEXPO on Twitter will simply be #ITEXPO. You will see enhanced levels of twitter messaging at the show (Twitter stream at keynotes for example) allowing the ITEXPO and related technology and communications communities to stay connected.

A good way to keep track of news from the show is to set up a column with search terms ITEXPO and/or #ITEXPO in programs such as Hootsuite, Tweetdeck and/or your mobile Twitter app.

The show officially begins in nine days and here are some links you may find useful:

Thank you for your message... Please be advised I will be out of the office Feb 2-4, 2011 attending TMC's ITEXPO in Miami.

11 Things Facebook Should Do With Their New $1.5B

January 21, 2011

Facebook has just received yet another billion dollars in investment and this on top of the $500M from Goldman Sachs and Digital Sky technologies according the company. This is what Facebook should do with the money.

1)      Start an app store: These days you are no one in tech without one – they need to find a way to get in on the game and leverage their community in a way which can be easily monetized.

2)      Compete with iTunes/Netflix: If everyone is in Facebook, all the time then why wouldn’t they consider buying their media where they live.

Online Community and SEO Interview

January 21, 2011

I was just interviewed on a podcast by Peter Radizeski who in addition to being a TMC blogger is an expert on the telecom channel and a sought out social media and marketing consultant. On the online community building and SEO podcast we discussed not only how to improve search rank but how to select keywords and use call to action to ensure success. We also had a chance to discuss TMC’s online communities which are news-generated and help our sponsors with their branding, thought leadership, social networking and lead generation. I Hope you like it.
