Google Breaks Cardinal Supplier Rule

January 11, 2010

There is an unwritten rule that companies who compete with their customers are inviting trouble. When companies break this rule, generally their competition will use this information against them when there is a bid on the table. Over time, when you break this rule, it bites you in the rear.

Companies like Intel, who have a dominant position in the market, are generally able to bend or break these principles to some degree but for most others, you know where to draw the line.

Most Tablets Will Fail

January 7, 2010

Hi all, here a small dose of reality. I know the world is tablet-crazy

and all and I hate to be the one breaking up the party but in reality those of us over 18, remember how tech works. Most of the tablets will die horribly. Perhaps content will interoperate between these larger than normal gadgets, making this a minor issue but it is very very unlikely that more than a handful of these devices will sell in volumes needed to be successful.

Google, Apple set for Death Match

January 5, 2010

Like a Godzilla movie with award-winning special effects, this battle will open up new opportunities for players in the communications market deep into the decade.

Apple recently announced it has had over three billion applications downloaded on the iPhone and iPod Touch and has further purchased mobile advertising company Quattro Wireless for $300 bmillion. If you have followed Apple, you know this move is not surprising. Last November in fact I wrote about how Google is scaring Apple to death as evidenced by Apple filing a patent in the advertising space and reportedly bidding for Admob.

Apples iTablet Confirmed - Why it May Ruin Tech

January 4, 2010

Some of the most exciting news for all of technology has to be the official introduction of a new product category at Apple - the tablet. After all, the iPod and iPhone were responsible for billions of dollars in new spending from global consumers. Remember, MP3 players and mobile phones were both mature markets when Apple entered - but look at them now -- everyone seems to crave products from Apple and they want to spend more money for them because frankly they are worth it.

But there is danger in this new product launch which scares me more than almost anything else in the land of tech.

M2M Equals Smart Services

January 4, 2010

"Engineers like to call it machine-to-machine or M2M while businesspeople like to refer to the market as smart services," is a notable paraphrased quote made by nPhase's Joe Jumayo while being interviewed (video below) by Dr. Mary Cronin, a TMC and Crossfire Media partner in the Smart Product Ecosystem industry site on TMCnet and referred to affectionately as SPEC.

Some of the more important parts of their conversation have to do with e-book readers which are now interconnected, water treatment plants which are connected by M2M solutions and more. Siemens is used as example above in discussing how M2M has helped them in the water business and this experience is being used to help them in other areas in which they play.

M2M is also important in the robotics space where Jumayo explains an outage of a robot for an hour in a particular application is the equivalent of $60,000 lost.
