CloudGenix Gets Funded to Fuel SD-WANs

May 12, 2015

Kumar Ramachandran, Co-Founder and CEO of CloudGenix recently sat with me and explained his vision for software-defined enterprise WANS, which use off-the-shelf hardware and allow corporations to abstract their business processes, utilize hybrid network virtualization and network function projection. SD‐WANs use centralized controllers without relying on interactions with underlying provider transport solutions. De‐coupling the data plane from the control plane, replacing internetworking protocols with APIs and building policies based on application metrics rather than network metrics make this possible according to Kumar.

In case you were wondering - according to the company, the simplest definition of a SD‐WAN is a WAN that utilizes software and virtualization technologies instead of traditional hardware such as routers to connect remote locations.

The company would love for you to learn more by downloading their Dummies book on SD-WANs

QualiSystems Boosts Automation of NFV, DevOps and SDN

May 11, 2015

One of the more interesting vendors at Interop 2015 was Qualisystems as the company allows companies to automate many manual tasks in order to more efficiently develop, manage and deploy jobs in the cloud and on legacy computing environments. Alex Henthorn-Iwane, VP, Marketing explained his company designs solutions for non-programmer teams. Moreover, they help create an environment as a service – a set of cloud offerings for a private cloud. They take very complex infrastructure and make it more agile and continuous, like what they would run on Amazon AWS.

He went on to explain, quite often engineering has one cloud, testing has another and deployment could be in yet another cloud.

Stratus Technologies helps Boost the Efficiency and Fault Tolerance of NFV

April 22, 2015

As telcos become software telcos, they are beginning to shed some of their bespoke, proprietary hardware in exchange for NFV software running on OTS computers from white box companies, Dell, HP, Cisco, etc. This move follows similar trends in many markets – thus we’ve seen opinion pieces about how software is eating the world.

It’s all about abstraction really. Software running on smartphones for example can replace fixed-function remote controls.

ITEXPO will help Explain the Coming Cloud Upgrade

January 16, 2015

The cloud is changing how technology is bought, sold and used. The very economics of business have shifted as a result. When Yahoo! launched, it needed boatloads of multimillion dollar Sun Microsystems servers just to have the computing capacity needed to deliver services. Now, companies can just pay as they go and purchase as much cloud as they need to get a job done.

Don't Miss Fiber Mountain Session Next Week in Vegas

August 5, 2014

Next week at Software Telco Congress (the NFV and SDN event) in Las Vegas - collocated with ITEXPO, there will be some amazing speakers who will help companies evolve into the software realm from hardware. Specifically, there will be one new speaker who has never spoken at a TMC event. M.H. Raza is the CEO of Fiber Mountain.

Alcatel-Lucent: NFV Can be More Secure than Legacy

June 16, 2014

As NFV and SDN usher in a new era of software telcos, there are just so many pieces which have to be put into place to enable solutions from disparate vendors to interoperate smoothly. Moreover, carriers are always looking for one throat to choke and NFV really opens up the carrier network is so many new ways that determining who is responsible for issues is more difficult.

Security has always been a major focus for operators. Indeed, when their networks were proprietary and thought to be bulletproof, it was determined a simple whistle distributed in a box of Captain Crunch cereal could give access to hackers.

GENBAND Perspectives 14 Live Blog

June 10, 2014

GENBAND Perspectives 14 kicks off this morning - expect the live blog here... Last night the company hosted a networking reception where I had a chance to speak randomly with one of the company's customers in Mississippi - an ILEC becoming a CLEC. The person I spoke with said they actually purchased the equipment from Nortel just before that company went under and GENBAND acquired the assets. He went on to say he is very happy with the road map GENBAND is on and how they handled the acquisition.

NTT Communications Becomes an NFV-Fueled Software Telco

May 29, 2014

In a press conference, NTT Communications unveiled today the first global NFV and SDN network. Touting the fact that CIOs and service providers need to more heavily focus on their networks, the company said these technologies will create a bigger wave than the internet for carriers.

They say the level of disruption is tremendous.

If you’ve read my comments about the birth, potential and future of the software telco business (more), you can see I agree in general with what the company is espousing.

Metaswitch Forum 2014 Live Blog

May 13, 2014

Metaswitch Forum 2014 will kick off soon, stay tuned.

Any second now - its 8:05 am in New Orleans

The event has kicked off with a keynote presented by Steve Gleave - which has been preceded by a few well-produced videos. The idea so far is tying in the theme of the event "The brains of the new global network" with Steve's brain. The cast of characters behind the scenes show how they tinker with Steve's brain - he eventually comes out on stage on a Segway with Harley Davidson sound-effects.
