Diverse Broadband Roots Gives Hughes an SD-WAN Edge

December 15, 2017

One of the most demanding communications environments is satellite where bandwidth can be extremely limited yet real-time communications is a necessity as soldiers need to communicate with others - potentially thousands of miles from the battlefield. Over the years, VoIP satellite technology has evolved allowing multiple conversations to be compressed together to minimize bandwidth use.

Today, satellite bandwidth may seem abundant but during the numerous wars in the middle-east in the past few decades, satellite vendors really had to push the edge of the envelope to allow effective communications to take place.

Hughes Network Systems is the group within satellite company Hughes that provides business services and its evolved to become a diverse broadband provider over the years - from roots which include providing military solutions.

GENBAND Enables Carriers to Take On Silicon Valley

April 18, 2017

In 2010, we told you Genband has become a mini Alcatel-Lucent for all practical purposes and we couldn't help thinking of this, almost a decade later as we sat, discussing the latest happenings at the company. GENBAND is actually not only a company delivering hardware and software, they have become a cloud-enabler for carriers worldwide. For example, Deutsche Telekom has a consumer app based on Kandy.

Who is GENBAND today? They are becoming the ultimate enabler of carrier communications solutions.

Go!Foton Hopes to Advance Data Center and Carrier Fiber Transformation

November 23, 2016

Continuous advancements in technology and hyperbolic cloud growth is straining all networks at carrier central offices and data centers alike. Virtually all aspects of the data center have evolved - from Ethernet speeds to software defined networks and even SD-WAN. In corporate networks we've seen the rise of virtualization become table stakes for companies of more than about 25 people. Carriers have been moving towards NFV to gain similar benefits in their central offices.

Yet there hasn't been the same evolution in fiber management and connectivity and its the reason we interviewed Farshid Mohammadi of Go!Foton to learn more about his company's efforts in this area.

Tell us about your company, Go!Foton

Procera Helps Carriers Shape Even Encrypted Traffic

September 26, 2016

One of the biggest challenges for network operators is certainly dealing with the growth of network traffic in a margin-compression environment. Video is one of the main drivers of bandwidth growth on the net but it isn’t always easy to deal with it. Consider mobile traffic is growing 53% CAGR from 2015 to 2020.

See graph below:

In addition to dealing with the above issues, carriers have to also manage various video providers and their particular responses to your traffic shaping.

NTT DATA Adds Dell Services. Touts Cloud Offering, NFV Success and Agent Growth

April 3, 2016

There is some interesting timing in NTT DATA’s decision to purchase Dell Services in order to become a leading Global IT service provider. Before we get to that however, it’s worth noting the deal is valued at more than $3 billion has already helped Dell’s debt reduction and a ratings increase as it acquires EMC.

For NTT, The combined companies will offer expanded BPO capabilities with a focus on the healthcare and insurance markets.

Other benefits of the acquisition will include an increased infrastructure platform footprint, with Dell’s U.S., U.K.

Level 3's SDN-Powered Instant-Bandwidth is here

March 13, 2016

Programmable networking (with an emphasis on analytics)! That was the message from Travis Ewert (pictured), SVP of Network Software Development for Level 3. You’ll have to excuse my exaggerated use of punctuation. Travis didn’t really exclaim or scream about programmable networking but he was very excited about to discuss how Level 3 is able to use its SDN control-layer to more flexibly provide bandwidth than other players in the space.

At MWC, Netronome Powers up Ericsson and Juniper NFV and SDN Solutions

March 2, 2016

A major theme at Mobile World Congress (MWC16) was digital transformation which allows carriers to compete more efficiently with OTT providers. As the world moves faster towards becoming fully digitized, the pace of change also gets quicker. Operators need to be agile and in order to be agile they need lots of powerful computers with smart software running things behind the scenes. AT&T’s move into OTT video this week is an example of how carriers need to compete on the competitor’s home turf.

Lemko EZ LTE Really Disrupts the Carrier Model

October 28, 2015

As I write this, I’m in disbelief as it seems impossible to take the massive carrier equipment which makes up the multimillion dollar central office LTE network and repackage it into a plug-and-play module which fits on a coffee table. Yet, this is exactly what Norman Fekrat of Lemko shared with me.

A previous interview with Norman regarding his company’s solutions

I’ve known the company for some time as a provider of NFV solutions (video) based on software. What I didn't expect was how fast Moore's Law has worked to decrease the size of the hardware.
