2017 Predictions From Rich Tehrani

Without further ado, here are my predictions for the new year!!! What do you think? 

 

  1. We will see major financial problems begin to take shape at hardware companies without a solid cloud strategy.
  2. Trump’s new offshore tax rules will bring a flood of cash to tech companies – much of this will be shared via dividends and buybacks but it will also find its way into M&A as well as new product development.
  3. Smart factories with low cost energy will make the US a major force in manufacturing but this prediction will need to take 10 years to play out and thanks to IoT and robotics, the factory of tomorrow will need 1/10th the workers of today.
  4. Chinese cell phone provider Huawei or Xiaomi will become a serious thorn in the side of Samsung – producing low cost phones for hundreds less than the Korean maker and selling them in large numbers outside China.

Continuous advancements in technology and hyperbolic cloud growth is straining all networks at carrier central offices and data centers alike. Virtually all aspects of the data center have evolved - from Ethernet speeds to software defined networks and even SD-WAN. In corporate networks we've seen the rise of virtualization become table stakes for companies of more than about 25 people. Carriers have been moving towards NFV to gain similar benefits in their central offices.

Yet there hasn't been the same evolution in fiber management and connectivity and its the reason we interviewed Farshid Mohammadi of Go!Foton to learn more about his company's efforts in this area.

Why AT&T Should be Encouraged to Purchase Time Warner

At first glance, allowing AT&T, a large, powerful telephone company to purchase the invaluable media assets of Time Warner makes one wonder if the resulting organization will be too rich and powerful. The answer is, if executed properly - hopefully better than AOL's attempt, it will be a whopper of an organization which has a limitless list of valued assets such as CNN, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, HBO and TNT.

Keep in mind, AT&T has multiple modes of distribution from wireless to wired and satellite. So really, even at second glance, it would seem we are putting together an organization with so much market power, competitive companies will be slaughtered.

Regulators will likely force AT&T to divest some assets or agree to some stipulations which keep the market from being excessively harmed - but let's discuss what the new AT&T could do in a worst-case unconditional buyout scenario.

You can already stream unlimited DirectTV on the AT&T Wireless network at no additional cost, giving the carrier an advantage over other wireless carriers.





Wireless Carriers Racing to the Bottom

It had to happen eventually - a price war is taking its toll on telecom equipment providers because their customers won't spend money in some cases unless they can see an ROI of a billion dollars fairly quickly. This comment is attributed to Verizon from a trusted source I can't reveal.

In my recent meeting with Sprint, they explained how they are racing to the bottom by giving away more for less with their Unlimited Freedom plans. Obviously, these are my words, not theirs.



In addition, the Sprint ads on TV are amazing - they say their network quality is within one percent of Verizon yet a lot cheaper. When put in those terms, its very tough for Verizon to keep charging a premium for their service.

T-Mobile is obviously part of the challenge as well - they've been giving away more for less and increasing their value over the years.

Ericsson just put our its numbers for the quarter and an unexpected 14% drop in sales cratered the stock by 20%.









LinkNYC: The Ultimate Sin Hub in your Neighborhood

Once upon a time you had to travel to Las Vegas to live the Sin City Experience but why bother when new York can bring it right to your neighborhood. The idea behind LinkNYC is fantastic - free internet access at insane speeds for all to use for free.

The trouble is, the users are still watching porn, smoking weed and since this blog is rated PG-13, I can't go into the other sins taking place in the 150 feet or so where you can get absolutely blazing fast WiFi.

That's even after the screens were removed.

On the plus side, the upload speed is actually faster than the download - in this recent speed test taken by a fan of the technology and sent to me. 193 Mbps up and 153 Mbps down!

The city hopes the idea will generate more than $500,000,000 which is probably why we won't see the kiosks going away any time soon... In fact, we can expect 4,550 of them by 2019.

We know the Muni-WiFi market crashed and burned once before - we'll see if this time things will be different.

Finally, I have never done a ping test where the response time was 7 ms.













Procera Helps Carriers Shape Even Encrypted Traffic

One of the biggest challenges for network operators is certainly dealing with the growth of network traffic in a margin-compression environment. Video is one of the main drivers of bandwidth growth on the net but it isn’t always easy to deal with it. Consider mobile traffic is growing 53% CAGR from 2015 to 2020.

In addition to dealing with the above issues, carriers have to also manage various video providers and their particular responses to your traffic shaping.

SD-WAN Fuels Aryaka 150% Growth

Aryaka just announced another great quarter in Q2 - 150% growth. These are the highlights:
  • Over 150% year over year growth for Q2 and the first half of the year, as compared to 2015
  • Over 70 new customers added, including gaming company, Demonware; cable manufacturer, Volex; the educational platform, Knewton; and Quanshi, the leading online collaboration service provider in China.
  • 40% of total bookings generated from existing customer base, who expanded their use of Aryaka’s services
  • Partner contribution of more than 73% of total Q2 bookings
  • Exited Q2 with $45M+ of unbilled backlog (customer contractual commitments yet to be invoiced).
  • China, Asia Pacific overall, and Europe were among key growth drivers with bookings in these regions equaling momentum in the U.S.
We had been working on an interview with the company regarding their last quarter results and was just about to post it. The timing couldn't be better.

If you want your company to have a tremendous valuation, make it an integral part of a platform which allows others to benefit financially from effectively selling your products and services. Tens of thousands of resellers promote Microsoft software, hundreds of thousands develop software for iOS, Salesforce has a great partner ecosystem of app builders and so on. There are a few ways of becoming the platform company… From the inside out or the outside in.

In other words, once iPhones got in the hands of millions of people, the apps added value to the platform and by default, Apple, who is on the inside.

The most dangerous criminals on the Dark Web are states. Hackers sponsored by Russia attacked Ukraine in the past. It is also a matter of time before a rogue state or bad actor takes out critical infrastructure in the US.




IDT $19.99 Cloud UC Package Delivers Solid Channel Value

IDT Corporation has been a visionary in the VoIP space for almost two decades and I’ve always been impressed with the company’s technology and range of solutions in the SIP trunking and hosted PBX spaces. Recently, they have become very aggressive in the UC space, going after a channel and looking to be the disruptor in the market they helped create in the 1990s.

In an in-person interview, IDT/Net2Phone President Jonah Fink told me he thinks his company will keep people up at night.
