Sonus Says Dial Plans Are A hot Product These Days

I just had a fascinating conversation with Sonus – they company responsible in-part for getting carriers to adopt IP communications is now seeing something very interesting happen. The company’s PSX or Centralized Routing and Policy Server is gaining interest among customers. The reason? They are looking to integrate their disparate IP communications systems together into a unified solution.

BroadSoft's Big Opportunity: Contact Centers

After spending more than a decade selling solutions which allow carriers to resell UC solutions, BroadSoft has decided the call center is its next big opportunity. By acquiring Transera, BroadSoft is positioned well to provide cloud-based call center solutions to not only customers but carriers themselves. In addition, these solutions will be scalable as BroadWorks is known for scaling to million so users.

In my meeting was Prem Uppaluru, who founded Transera – the cloud contact center company which BroadSoft acquired.

CafeX Looks to Solve Biggest Video Collaboration Challenges

WebRTC has been an incredible driver of interoperability in real-time communications but it still won’t work across every browser. CafeX Communications has been working on solving this problem for years and now has a new solution called Chime which it hopes becomes the ultimate cross-platform, browser-powered video solution.

I spoke with Sajeel Hussain about the new solution and he emphasized that it works with Microsoft Edge and can interwork with in-room systems from Cisco and also work with Microsoft Skype for Business. In addition, he emphasized companies can save 75% on their bandwidth utilization as Chime can cluster four video sessions as a single session which connects to the MCU.

If was an app, it would likely be worth north of $100 billion today but sadly, there were no ultra-successful app stores at the time. And if memory serves, our phones weren’t smart, all they did was allow us to flip them open and talk.

Craig Walker, became a founding investor in the company and later sold it to Yahoo.

Tangoe Goes on the Mobility-as-a-Service Offensive at MWC16

was one of the leading players in the TEM or telecom expense management space when it launched and did a superior job of rolling up the market and becoming the leader in what is now the enterprise mobility management (EMM) market. The company’s CEO, Al Subbloie (pictured) is never afraid to innovate and be ahead of the pack. In fact, we’ve been covering companies he’s run since the 1980s (alas, I can’t find any articles on the internet earlier than this). Tangoe’s new Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) offering will leverage its position within the enterprise marketplace to offer wireless plans, devices, expense management, EMM and logistics to create an integrated mobile solution.

GENBAND Makes NFV, SBC and fring Alliance news at MWC16

As carriers look to compete with OTT voice and video solutions, GENBAND is helping them via their new fring Alliance Revenue Engine Apps. As a reminder, the fring Alliance is a group of carriers working collectively to for all effective purposes to launch a cross-carrier Skype competitor. GENBAND makes it easy for operators to set up a virtually turnkey solution which allows mobile and other operators to provide an alternative OTT service.

A common challenge for many businesses is having adequate connectivity. You’d think in the US this isn't an issue but I can tell you from firsthand experience (I am also CEO of a New York and Connecticut provider of IT support), in many buildings, the landlord signs an exclusive contract with a carrier and subsequently the tenants are stuck with one, often poor choice. Quite often, these buildings have only copper connections and they are generally very old. In other words, the telco locks in a building to avoid having to upgrade service to compete with cablecos.

I’ve just returned from a whirlwind event for the telecom market known as Mobile World Congress and I’m still amazed by the amount of optimism I’ve just witnessed. It would not be an exaggeration to say this level of excitement about the future of telecom hasn’t been seen since 1998. Although it has great food, the city of Barcelona has a pretty poor economy.

SIP Forum and UNH Team on Seamless Enterprise Communications Deployment

The SIP Forum recently announced it’s continuing to do its part to ensure enterprise communications products fully interoperate with service provider networks. In fact, its new SIPconnect Certification Testing Program will be hosted by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) and is designed to help ensure adherence to the SIPconnect Technical Recommendation currently at Version 1.1.

In an interview with Marc Robins SIPNOC Program Chair and Robert Kinder of Cox Business who also serves as a director, they mentioned the SIPconnect 1.1 spec is about five years old and is currently included in many RFPs. The goal of this new initiative however, is to increase interoperability between IP-PBX providers and service providers.

The idea is to plug in the box to the carrier with less headaches, in less time, and see installation issues and challenges which could have lasted weeks, be reduced to mere hours.

Dialogic Plunges into Apps with PowerVille

By technology standards, Dialogic is a veteran – having been established in 1983, the company has supplied communications infrastructure used by carriers, enterprises and developers for many, many decades. The New Jersey company enjoyed the benefit of providing solutions which could be paid for by arbitrage. In the late eighties and nineties, Dialogic boards allowed companies to build computer-telephony solutions which used off-the-shelf computers to compete with custom-built hardware solutions from manufacturers of telecom equipment. Even though Dialogic boards were not cheap, solutions based on their products cost far less than alternatives on the market thanks to the ability to leverage PCs and servers.
