Zultys Upgrades its Communications Software

December 2, 2015

Unified communications vendor Zultys has been hard at work coming up with a new release and since it’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to share what they are up to, I reached out to interview Neil Lichtman, Chairman & CEO of the company. He was gracious enough to give his views on a range of areas from the future of unified to communications the challenges facing channel partners.

Is technology changing business for the better? Why/why not?

Mazda to Bring Back the Rotary Engine

December 1, 2015

In the nineties, I leased the last generation Mazda RX-7 and it was an amazing car. The company touted it as "Lightning in a world of thunder." It handled like almost nothing else and at 255 HP, you could push the car to its limits in every-day driving.

The technology powering the car was a rotary-engine... A single triangular rotor spins inside a small valveless barrel and two turbos make the spinning happen even faster.

Unlike a conventional engine with pistons which go up and down, the moving parts in this engine never change direction.

It was a far simpler approach to engine design.

Alas, the car did have some problems. Ed McMahon said the car was fragile and he was correct.

November 12, 2015

Mitel put on a nice event in Manhattan today. Wes Durow, CMO made a great presentation on where the company was and where its going.

A quote of note: "One out of three SMS messages goes across the Mitel network."

Some of what I am hearing is embargoed - so sadly, I'll have to keep you posted on some announcements at a later date.

Rich McBee, CEO takes the stage.

Are desk phones dead? "We ship a handset every 14 seconds and the pace is accelerating."

Our vision: Making communications and collaboration seamless.

Important points:

They will continue to acquire legacy solutions and then grow them. The contact center is a more and more important part of the business.

The intersection of mobile, cloud and enterprise is the next thing for us - we will accelerate products and solutions in this area.

"We have 3 billion potential subscribers with our current carrier customers."

Much discussion about Mavenir - the acquisition which gives them great mobile technology and low cost R&D centers.

Security is becoming a huge factor going forward.

UCC is more complex than ever

Simplifying this in an open environment  is what we're betting the company on.

We will continue to be a consolidator.

Mitel Next Accelerator is a think tank working on the next big thing but it needs to have products in a customer in one year - and they have to be paying customers.

When Hired Gun Managers Fail

November 11, 2015

What happens when you intersect the Innovator's Dilemna with investment, ROI and stragic planning? Especially since new, disruptive technologies aren't adopted overnight - they can take ten years or more to be widely accepted. Conversely, investors are generally more short-term oriented.

Bottom line: markets have their own timing which require companies to adapt.

TMC Conducting 100+ San Jose Video Interviews Next Week

November 6, 2015

I'm really excited to share that next week, I'll be in Silicon Valley interviewing over 100 companies and personally learning about the state of technology in the hottest tech market in the world. The response to our trip to the west coast has been fantastic. What's amazing is how many companies we'll meet which are relatively new.

Some which I'm sure most of you have never heard of and many which are just out of stealth mode.

They span the range of hot technologies from analytics, cloud and IoT to identity management, speech recognition and of course security.

We have a few slots left so if you have something important to share - like a leading-edge technology you are about to introduce, please reach out ASAP to sfine (at) tmcnet.com.

Here are some of the videos from a recent trip we took to Dallas.

Happy Birthday Digi International

November 5, 2015

In the eighties I was a UNIX admin and database programmer and relied on DIGI International for terminal banks which plugged into the UNIX machine and allowed dumb terminals from companies like Wyse to be connected. For those of you who may not know, UNIX is the grandfather of Linux and back then you could run a company of 16 users on 1 MB of RAM and 50-100MB worth of hard disk!

Hard disks cost about $5,000 at the time - or about $11,000 today!

Getting back to DIGI - they are one of the few companies which was able to evolve and stay on the leading edge of the tech curve. they are now major players in the IoT and their solutions even help NASA.

My colleague Ken Briodagh has more but I didn't want the opportunity for me to wish them Happy 30th Birthday to go by. Its an achievement - especially in the tech space to survive and thrive for multiple decades.
