Microsoft Buys Nokia Device and Services Business

September 3, 2013

“What’s good for windows phones will be good for the Windows ecosystem,” said Steve Ballmer to CNBC regarding the company’s acquisition of Nokia’s services and device business. He went on to explain that this deal will help Lenovo and Dell. Of course he said this precisely because this strategy is going to cause problems with Microsoft’s relationship with other hardware manufacturers the company relies on. The goal of course is to the thread the needle – similar to Google, by producing hardware and licensing Android to others.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will pay EUR 3.79 billion to purchase substantially all of Nokia’s Devices & Services business, and EUR 1.65 billion to license Nokia’s patents, for a total transaction price of EUR 5.44 billion in cash.

7 Areas of Microsoft Focus Post-Ballmer

August 23, 2013

Steve Ballmer has just announced he will be stepping down from Microsoft in the next twelve months and for his many critics, this is triumphant news. The happiest critic will likely be the author of the Mini-Microsoft blog I first reported on in 2005. The author, a Microsoft Employee was never a fan of the management and in a post today outlined the challenges regarding the timing of this announcement – it follows a restructuring which may have to be restructured yet again under another CEO. Moreover he goes on to suggest the next leader actually have programming experience.

Live-Streaming as Wearable Tech Killer App

August 22, 2013

When asked about the future of wearable tech and whether the market can truly evolve from under one billion dollars to fifty billion in a few years I point people to two trends which we can’t escape.

Miniaturization is unstoppable – the smartphone today is the supercomputer of a decade or so ago. Simply stated – even though battery technology isn’t evolving as fast as we would like, everything else is.

Although physics seems to be limiting battery performance, it doesn't mean the technology isn't advancing, Steve Grady from Cymbet has more

Jennifer Darmour talks about the growth of the Wearable Tech market at Wearable Tech Expo in New York

Five-ten years ago, did people think they would be watching movies on a device which fits in their pocket? Probably not.

Snom Riding Lync Wave to Success

August 19, 2013

In a recent meeting with Snom’s Mike Storella in the company’s office in Massachusetts, I had a chance to learn how the company is riding the Microsoft Lync wave to success. One of the early differentiators they touted was Lync phones which allowed multiple lines – an essential feature for many, including executives who don’t answer their own phones.

This early flexibly caught the attention of Microsoft – not to mention a number of Fortune class companies who needed such features.

Mike touted other features as well like the company being first to allow device-based music-on-hold for Lync as well as being first to qualify a device for the Microsoft Lync 2013 compatible devices program.

Why Apple Should not Produce Low-Cost Phones

August 19, 2013

Speculation and rumor will tell you that next month Apple is set to introduce a low-cost phone. Some will argue this makes sense since Apple is competing in a field with other companies such as Samsung and HTC which produce devices across many price points. The question worth asking however is whether this strategy is logical in the long-run. After all, aren’t mobile devices the natural evolution of PCs and laptops and hasn’t Apple learned that to be successful in those markets, you want to stay as far away as you can from being seen as a low-cost, commodity electronics producer?

Jobs Movie Inaccurate Say Steve Wozniak and John Sculley

August 16, 2013

By now everyone knows there is a movie called Jobs which celebrates the life of Steve Jobs and tries to recreate the events which surround the tech legend’s life. Of course whenever such an ambitious project is undertaken, the challenge you have is getting agreement on what happened and just as importantly trying to get everyone involved in the happenings to work collaboratively.

It is apparent this movie faced some challenges in both regards. For example, Ashton Kutcher who plays a pretty convincing Steve Jobs complained recently that Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak aka “The Woz” is being paid by another company to support a different Steve Jobs film.

Why Google is Getting Hammered on Twitter for being Evil

August 16, 2013

Google is being called out by Microsoft for being "evil" and pursuing anti-competitive practices

Last May Google blocked a Microsoft YouTube app from running on its mobile platform Windows Phone causing Microsoft to rewrite it to Google’s specifications. This week the app was blocked once again and Microsoft’s David Howard explains why in a letter titled The limits of Google’s openness.

Howard explains that his company’s goal is to satisfy customers:

We know that this has been frustrating, to say the least, for our customers. We have always had one goal: to provide our users a YouTube experience on Windows Phone that’s on par with the YouTube experience available to Android and iPhone users.

Mosquito Magnet Cleared my Mosquitos

August 13, 2013

My yard has always been quite buggy. This past weekend however I went outside and didn’t see or more importantly feel a single biting insect after being outside at dusk for about ninety minutes. Since we had a very wet spring, the mosquito population in May and June was absolutely tremendous – I didn’t even want to go outside without liberal amounts of spray which is harmful to humans.

The good news is I can actually see where all these biting critters went… Into a net in my Mosquito Magnet Executive.
