Logic Prevails in EU as Bill Gates Robot Tax Dies

June 2, 2017

As we wrote in February while eating sushi and reading about Bill Gates trying to set global tax policy, taxing robots is a terrible idea. We wondered why Mr. Gates who we have the deepest admiration for in terms of his contribution to the world of tech, didn't volunteer the idea to tax office productivity applications which replaced workers. Could it be perhaps because Microsoft, the company he founded, made hundreds of billions of dollars selling these applications?

Just a guess of course.

No one wants people to be jobless or poor or for that matter unhappy, unhealthy, etc. but taxing technology isn't the answer and never ever will be.

UCONN Brings Tech Education to Young Women

June 2, 2017

UConn Engineering’s new 2017 SPARK Program gives young women in middle school and high school access to week long learning programs that focus on different engineering disciplines. This is the latest effort by the Engineering Diversity and Outreach Center to help UCONN bridge the gender gap in the STEM fields and make more young women interested in science fields.

Each week’s curriculum will focus on a different engineering discipline:

  • Coding (July 9 – 15): learn the basics of coding and its real-world applications using Arduino
  • Robotics (July 16 – 22): learn how to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and miniature robot
  • 3D Printing (July 23 – 29): learn how to use scanning devices and to input variables into the 3D printer to print solids
The only challenge might be getting to the Storrs, CT campus of UCONN - it's more or less between Boston and Manhattan. The campus is beautiful by the way - we know this from personal experience.

Target and Casper, Retail is now like Telecom

May 25, 2017

Retailers are now a lot like broadband providers

Casper sells a mattress that rolls up and comes in a box and has rave reviews as well as a massive marketing budget which we've witnessed on the web, TV and radio. The company bills itself as the Internet's famous mattress.

Target is a retailer with nearly 2,000 stores under increasing pressure from the Internet's favorite reseller, Amazon.

For years, people in telecom have discussed why carriers like AT&T and Verizon don't want to be purely "dumb pipe" providers, they want to provide more enhanced services such as home security, business firewalls via NFV, OTT alternatives to Skype and more. That more is quite often programming aka content aka video programming.

Bottom line, retail is now like the telecom business where retailers need to diversify from distribution to content. In the same way, retailers need to diversify from distribution to products.

Carriers need to diversify because broadband is a commodity.

Hey Luddite CEO, Your @ss is Fired

May 22, 2017

The Luddites were a group of English textile workers and weavers in the 19th century who destroyed weaving machinery as a form of protest. The group was protesting the use of machinery in a "fraudulent and deceitful manner" to get around standard labor practices.Luddites feared that the time spent learning the skills of their craft would go to waste as machines would replace their role in the industry.

These Luddites were workers but what happens if you happen to be CEO and aren't on the leading-edge of tech? We now have our answer - you can be fired.

GENBAND Enables Carriers to Take On Silicon Valley

April 18, 2017

In 2010, we told you Genband has become a mini Alcatel-Lucent for all practical purposes and we couldn't help thinking of this, almost a decade later as we sat, discussing the latest happenings at the company. GENBAND is actually not only a company delivering hardware and software, they have become a cloud-enabler for carriers worldwide. For example, Deutsche Telekom has a consumer app based on Kandy.

Who is GENBAND today? They are becoming the ultimate enabler of carrier communications solutions.

New Flowroute Customer Onboarding Platform Lubricates CSP Porting

April 17, 2017

Smoothly and effectively onboarding new enterprises is one of the most significant operational challenges for cloud communications providers. Flowroute is aiming squarely at helping these companies deliver an excellent experience for companies migrating to their services.

In a recent meeting with Dan Nordale and Dave Rich, they told me they asked themselves, "Why is it so easy to get a gmail account but not so easy to get telecom configured for business?"

And thus the Flowroute mission was born.

The company helps its customers in the following ways:

  • Onboarding API: Through an Onboarding API, Flowroute helps communication service providers manage the lifecycle of customer onboarding, from order submission to completion.
  • Bulk port orders: Gives CSPs the ability to create and manage thousands of port orders at once through the its web-based application.
  • Real-time event updates: Provides end-users access to the entire onboarding journey, including real-time messages from Flowroute’s number and porting experts.
  • Number feature automation: Enables automated configuration of CNAM, E911, call routing and name assignments during onboarding.
  • Quality Control: Sends automated verifications to confirm phone number transition through NPAC, the National Portability Administration Center.
The most impactful statement made in the interview "90% of enterprises run their PBX inside a firewall." It will flip in five years. Meaning we ar going from UC to UCaaS.

And as enterprises move to the cloud, Flowroute is trying to take away the pain of delayed ports and minimize the exposure customers have to tech issues.

By automating and approving onboarding, they help carriers expand their product sets as they no longer need to focus as much on these areas.

Konftel Goes BIG and small in Conferencing

April 16, 2017

The BIG news from Konftel is they hope to solve the huge headache most people experience when trying to set up the conference phone in a meeting. How? The Konftel 300IPx (we will refer to this as hardware) and Konftel Unite mobile app (we will refer to this as software) work together so a single click is all it takes to join a meeting.

Many of us techies have in-car navigation which could costs thousands of dollars yet we prefer an app - Google Maps, Waze, etc. This is the same idea but the 300IPx does have a small screen as well if you want to use it.

We had a recent discussion with Torbjörn Karlsson and Stefan Eriksson and they told us all about the solution and how it works.

The hardware has NFC, allowing a quick connection with your phone - unless it's an iPhone, because Apple has decided the masses don't need NFC at the moment.
