Surprising 2017 Tech Searches

February 13, 2017

We spent some time compiling what the community of tech buyers is searching for on TMCnet this year and were a bit surprised. The top result was Orange - the U.K based carrier followed by the largest tech company in China - Huawei and then the FCC and Verizon. Why Orange, we wondered? Nortel was a bit of a surprise to us as well because they no longer exist.

Trump, Obama and Other Topics I heard at ITEXPO

February 10, 2017

ITEXPO

is filled with leading-edge tech visionaries and people who travel a great deal so I figured it's worth passing along a few things I learned in Fort Lauderdale this past week.

  1. A few people were denied entry to the country to come to the show and I queried my team if it was related to our new President, Trump. The answer was shocking, the people were from the middle east and the Obama administration was in charge when they were denied entry. No one was denied under Trump, as far as I know. Of course, he hasn't been president for a long time so this could change but...
  2. A few people I spoke with this week, who frequently come to the U.S.

Greenfield Tech Has big news @ITEXPO

February 7, 2017

Greenfield Tech had a skew of news at ITEXPO 2017 in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Eric Klein and Nir Simionovich explained how the company has evolved their Cloudonix platform to be a Swiss Army Knife for telecom, consisting of media services, subscriber services and a SIP registrar layer.

One of the more interesting features is a backend cloud service and secure mobile SDK providing an end-to-end encrypted solution allowing companies to have secure conversations with customers. The idea is the communications within an app to a call center can be far more secure than the system we use today which has a number of issues.

For example, when a caller calls for help, their is no way to know for sure the caller is really who you might think as it is fairly easy to get access to personally identifiable information like social security numbers and maiden names, etc. Likewise, when a bank calls a customer, there is no way to know for sure it is the bank calling.

Tablets Cheaper Than Starbucks?

February 5, 2017

The price of electronics and telecommunications services have plummeted for decades in contrast to the cost of things like global wages or real estate in many parts of the world. We've gotten tot he point where Wal-Mart advertises tablets for an insanely low $35. Specifically, the RCA Voyager 7" 16GB Tablet Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). Contrast this to the cost of a very expensive coffee.

A few years back, Florida resident William Lewis ordered his 101-espresso-shot latte at his local Starbucks that cost $83.75 and came with 17 pumps of vanilla syrup, mocha and green tea matcha powder served with steamed milk.

Broadsoft CEO Not Happy with Trump Immigration Policy

January 31, 2017

Silicon Valley is not happy with president Trump and CEOs all seem to be coming out with statements which oppose his actions. Actually, tech companies beyond the valley seem to hold the same views.

BroadSoft CEO Michael Tessler is no exception. He's been a past speaker at ITEXPO (see above) and a visionary in the IP communications space for many years.

He recently said:

“Today, I am frustrated to be an American. The recent executive order from our new president is an outrageous attack against the values of this country.”

Congrats to Broadvoice on Worker Benefit Expansion

January 30, 2017

Quick hats off to Broadvoice for expanding worker benefits... You probably know TMC launched the Tech Culture Awards last year (winners) to celebrate the best tech cultures. As a result, we like to highlight companies which are doing their part to provide enhanced work environments.

In this case, the company has expanded the paid leave times for new moms and dads to 12 weeks. Paula Bernier has more on what the Broadvoice is doing.

Its a great trend and hopefully this positive press will encourage the companies who are able - to strive to provide the best possible environment for their team(s).

TMC is working to raise awareness of such job-related issues via its Tech Culture Awards program.

Cloud and Debt did Avaya in

January 24, 2017

8x8 has seen its stock triple in the past five years as they move upmarket and take share from telecom hardware players. Interestingly, this increment is the exact same amount of time its been since ShoreTel acquired M5 to provide cloud solutions to customers.

This is what we said at the time:
Cisco may now be forced to buy 8x8 and Avaya will likely make a move as well. This move could even push Vonage to go after the SMB space. Mitel is an interesting question - they have leading edge tech but a troubled stock to use as currency.
