AT&T Partner Exchange Adds Features to Gain SMB Share

March 27, 2015

Ma Bell knows it's all about ecosystem

Companies rare really focusing on their solution partners (SP) – especially when looking to court small to medium business customers as the SP owns the relationship. As reported by Tara Seals on TMCnet recently, Nimble Storage, AT&T, HP, Equinix, NTT America and others are deploying similar strategies to court this market.

In fact, two years ago, AT&T Partner Solutions decided it wanted to attract more customers with up to 20,000 employees and as a result, they decided they would change the way they do businesses. In a recent meeting, Brooks McCorcle, president of the division says they now act more like a Silicon Valley start-up.

While it isn't uncommon for companies to become more nimble in the face of growing competition, it is impressive to see any division of an established carrier making such a claim.

SimpleWAN Well Positioned for Security-as-a-Service Growth

March 17, 2015

The state of IT security is terrible - that is the only conclusion you can make when breach after breach is reported in the news. Keep in mind these are the breaches we hear about... Countless others go unreported. Hackers are winning the war against companies and customers are caught in the crossfire.

Will YipTV do to TV What Vonage did to Voice Calls?

March 11, 2015

The VoIP market literally revolutionized the way communications worked – allowing among-other-things, a company to provide over-the-top services which were decoupled from the phone company. For the first time you could go out and buy broadband from one company and phone service from another. The poster-child for this movement in the US had to be Vonage, and the company did a great deal for the fledgling VoIP market at the time. Thanks to Vonage, AT&T launched a competitive service called CallVantage out of fear.

A Candid Talk with Ford about Connected Cars and the Future

March 4, 2015

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2015 I spoke with James Buczowski a Henry Ford Technical Fellow about the company’s connected ecosystem experiments and the future. In the booth, Ford showed connected bikes talking to connected cars and subsequently developing connected ecosystems allowing cities to direct drivers to available parking spaces, developing usage-based insurance models.

Sometime back I wrote about connecting Waze to fitness apps to allow drivers to know if a bicycle rider was around the next blind corner. I mentioned this to Buczowski who told me the DOT in the US is working to get vehicles to communicate more effectively and the V2X initiative is designed to allow better vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications.

Acision Fights Creative Destruction with Innovation at #MWC15

March 4, 2015

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2015 Mark Zuckerberg gave a keynote speech for the second year in a row and to me it really seemed like keeping your friends close and your enemies closer. After all, WhatsApp and Facebook are responsible for billions of lost dollars in messaging revenue for global wireless carriers.

I couldn’t help but think of this as I met with Acision yesterday. Some years back I was in their corporate offices in Texas where they told me the threat from advertising based tech models to SMS was unsustainable.

cVidya Helps CSPs Provide Mass Customization to Boost Profit

March 3, 2015

We live in an age of mass customization. We've seen the trend for decades but its accelerating as customers can design their own clothes, perfume and more. Tatoos and body jewelry are yet other ways consumers choose to customize themselves. This thought came to mind in one of my recent briefings.

You see, at MWC 2015, cVidya showed carriers how their solutions allow them to tap into multiple sources in order to accelerate customer value.

TCS Shows Telemedicine Improvements and more at #MWC15

March 2, 2015

TCS had a wealth of interesting news at MWC - probably the most interesting was their VirtuMedix solution which is a HIPAA compliant virtual telemedicine solution allowing doctors and patients to securely communicate in order to minimize the need for in-person visits. In a live demo they showed me how a patient could get added to a queue after paying a fee for service and the doctor could then choose to take the audio or video call. From that point they communicate via WebRTC and can share photos if needed, of a rash for example.

The doctor has a fully integrated portal which links to billing and prescription systems and patients for their part get help entering their malady as the system is prepopulate with popular ailments.

In all, this is a very slick solution - they even have an integrated refund which can be sent to a patient if it is deemed they are better off going to the emergency room after all.

TCS is also working on connected car solutions - helping to harden the solutions to prevent buffer overruns and other issues which could be exploited by hackers. Penetration testing via range checks is one of the way they do this.

Why Cradlepoint is Poised for Growth

March 2, 2015

We all know the M2M and IoT spaces are growing like crazy... Our own growing M2M Evolution and IoT Evolution shows are just a few examples of how the marketplaces are on fire as a seamlessly never-ending flow of new customers comes to each iteration of these events.

While many of the conferences in the space are doing well, I have to say the prospects for one of the players in the market - Cradlepoint might be even better. They seem to be in the right place at the right time with the right products.

The company's AER 2100 is a wired router with built-in redundancy - allowing up to two wireless modems to be activated and even a second wired connection. The device is making tremendous gains in the IoT space.

In a conversation with Ken Hosac of the company today I got to learn how security is becoming another major reason for the company's growth.
