Company after company is learning what most of instinctively know already – competing with Apple head-on is like trying to tackle a freight train with your bare hands as it is barreling down the tracks in your direction. Amazon with its Kindle Fire competed on price and used its services to subsidize the device. Other tablet makers are finding it virtually impossible to compete without such advantages.

So finding out the news that Cisco is discontinuing its Cius tablet isn’t a surprise. I have mentioned before that Cisco is not good at consumer products and although the Cius was targeted at the enterprise, we know IT has become “consumerized” meaning the CIO doesn’t drive tablet decisions. As a result, Cisco has to compete with Apple head-on which as described above is virtually impossible to do.

Cisco’s OJ Winge had this to say about the company’s tablet and software strategy going forward:

Over the last year, Cisco has demonstrated a commitment to delivering innovative software like Cisco Jabber and Cisco WebEx across a wide spectrum of operating systems, tablets and Smart Phones. We’re seeing tremendous interest in these software offerings. Customers see the value in how these offerings enable employees to work on their terms in the Post-PC era, while still having access to collaboration experiences.

Based on these market transitions, Cisco will no longer invest in the Cisco Cius tablet form factor, and no further enhancements will be made to the current Cius endpoint beyond what’s available today. However, as we evaluate the market further, we will continue to offer Cius in a limited fashion to customers with specific needs or use cases.

Moving forward, we intend to double down on software offerings, like Jabber and WebEx, that provide the anytime, anywhere, and any device experiences. We will leverage key learnings and key collaboration experiences native to Cius in our other collaboration products.

Experience matters, and Cisco is focused on empowering individual collaboration styles more effectively and securely, while providing the broadest choice of collaboration options based on preference, location, and device.

To give you a sense of just how fast the market moves it was 11 months ago where the press was invited to a Cius launch event. After the meeting I posted the video above and an entry titled Cisco Cius and the Need for an Enterprise Tablet. One of my concerns from the post was the following:

The challenges here are how many people want a seven-inch tablet when they can get a ten-inch tablet at a similar price? It is worth noting in my tests with the Cius and the Blackberry Playbook that you get used to the smaller form-factor and obviously there are some portability benefits to a smaller device.

Is Cius a winner? Yes – absolutely but that doesn’t mean it will be successful. Hear me out. The Cius and the Avaya A175 with the Flare interface are building a category called enterprise tablet and to date it isn’t clear if this is a real category or not. By real I mean – substantial in terms of the number of devices sold. In other words, other than some vertical markets like hospitals where IT generally directs such device rollouts, most other industries have seen the BYOD-effect of the consumerization of IT meaning IT doesn’t dictate as much as they used to. Moreover, many workers are purchasing their own tablets and bringing them to work – reducing corporate expense while keeping workers happier.

One final issue is the tablet market right now is pretty much all iPad and Android devices haven’t made much of a dent. Analysts believe this will change but some people of note believe it is possible for Apple to own the tablet space. Moreover, with the close synergy between iTunes and iCloud, Apple makes it that much more desirable to have your tablet come from the same company.

On the way to the event I wrote a post How Cisco Needs to Sell the Cius Tablet which also outlined the risks:

The downside risk is fairly obvious though and that is that software is cheaper than hardware and most anything the Cius can do, an iPad or other Android tablet can as well.

And then there is the consumer electronics angle - Cisco purchased Flip and shut it down a few years later because the company isn't very good at competing in the consumer space where margins are razor-thin. Obviously the growth of smartphones helped kill the pocket-sized video camcorder market as well.

So for Cisco the obvious sales angle is to sell the Cius as an IP-phone which can do so much more. Avaya will obviously be doing the same with its A175 tablet. The challenge in the long-term will be convincing users that they want an Android tablet instead of an iPad. Which means both Avaya and Cisco need to be much better at doing consumer electronics - potentially partnering with a tablet maker like Samsung or HTC to one-up Apple.

I stand by my suggestion that the company should have partnered with a consumer electronics company. Now that Google Owns Motorola Mobility they could be a likely partner as well.

My sense is however that Cisco is so upset about its consumer electronics losses between Flip, Umi and Cius that they won't be open to any such partnerships unless they have little or no risk associated with them.

I reached out to Avaya regarding their strategy and spoke with Joel Hackney, President of Sales and Field Operations. He told me they remain committed on extending video to all employees in the enterprise including mobile video and SIP leadership are very important areas for them. Their pending RADVISION acquisition gives them a full video offering allowing you to enhance your own device or purchase a complete solution.

The question now is will any other company be able to compete with Apple as a pure-play tablet maker. Google should be coming out with their solution soon and we will see what sort of acceptance there is in the market.

Retailers have to struggle to make money to pay their brick and mortar overhead while consumers routinely see and touch the merchandise in their store while buying it online simultaneously. A coworker in fact detailed how he saved $30 on an iPad case buy using eBay on a computer from the Apple store he was in.

But the retail story isn’t a new one – we wrote stories at TMC in the nineties about the death of brick and mortar and certainly the loss of Circuit City was in-part caused by competition not only from WalMart and Costco but Amazon.

But now this margin compression is coming to currency exchange kiosks courtesy of the Currency Exchange Fee Calculator iPhone app which allows travelers to determine how much money exchange company is making on the transaction.

The challenge of course is your recourse is limited. It isn’t like you can shop online for an alternative. Perhaps however armed with additional information you may be able to negotiate a better rate. The program works optimally with an internet connection but if one is not available the software uses the rates it has stored in its database from the last time you used it.

Yahoo has taken the mobile browser and improved it dramatically by integrating search and allowing users to view results rapidly without the need to open page after page. While Google allows similar functionality on a desktop what Yahoo has done here is put the results of browsing up top where they should be. And with the simple swipe of a finger a user can scroll through pages after page to see the site they are looking for.

If you take the best parts of Google Instant and the now defunct visual SearchMe bowser and put them together with some added features you get Yahoo’s Axis.

Available on iOS in an iPad and iPhone version as well as a Firefox extension, expect the browser to have broad cross-platform support. One definite plus is the browser makes it much easier to research. When you are ready to search in fact the top 40% of the iPad screen (the device I tested on) is devoted to suggested search terms, latest news and pictures of results pages.

The company has radically rethought the search/browser relationship.

One downside is the Firefox extension on a PC semi-lockup up my browser on install. After I killed the Firefox process tree all was well again. A simple reboot would have also done the trick. Once installed I noticed that all the coolness of the browser such as screen shots of results pages appeared along the bottom – with a search box.

The only downside is this effectively means that in certain instances you won't be able to access clickable areas at the bottom of the screen. I had to use F11 to get a full-screen browser in fact to allow the blogging software I use based on Moveable Type to work properly when adding pictures.

Is Yahoo now relevant again? I can’t answer the question but I am very impressed with this accomplishment and if it gains traction it could position the company very well as a mobile play – not to mention having even more influence in the browser market – beyond just a toolbar play. IBM had a near death experience and came back stronger than ever – ditto for Apple. If Yahoo does return to its former glory – and it is way way too early to even consider this a possibility, it will be a product like Axis which will be responsible.

It is worth pointing out that others think this browser is great as well. Check out what Jolie O’Dell has to say over at VentureBeat.

And now that Chrome has overtaken IE as the dominant browser, it is as good a time as any to add some serious competition into the mix.

If you want to be involved - intimately involved with the manufacturing process behind a product you purchase then I suggest you immediately jump onto Kickstarter and start backing projects. The high-flying site has made lots of news in a short amount of time. In March of last year they received $10 million in funding. In its third year the site raised almost $120 million in funding - almost three times as much as total revenue from the prior years combined.

Perhaps the company's highest-profile project was Arianna Huffington looking to use the site to raise $1 billion to buy back the Huffington Post from AOL.

In December of last year I came to the conclusion that the TouchFire Keyboard - a silicone keyboard project on the site may be the perfect companion for those of us using the iPad 2 as a data entry device.

So with my readers in mind I ordered it and waited. And waited. And waited. There have been updates but the detailed emails seemed more like excuses than actual information I could use to determine when this thing was going to ship. And then finally today I received an email from "Steve & Brad" telling me - you know what - let me share how they gave me the news:

The Good News: We signed off on Touchfire going into volume production; hooray! Our factory will start making Touchfires next week.

The Bad News: We had to order 80,000 new magnets, and it will be about 4 weeks before they get here.

More Good News: By the time the magnets arrive, the factory will have made a lot of Touchfires!

Even More Good News: We were able to come up with a single version of Touchfire that works for all generations of iPads. In fact, we were forced to….

So the keyboard should now ship by the end of June - about a six month process or so from the time of ordering.

There are a few things I really like about these emails however. They are enthusiastic. You feel like it is your own in-house R&D team communicating with you - you can sense their excitement which naturally makes you excited as well. And these guys, Steve & Brad (pictured) are really likeable based on their emails - you just get the feeling you could spend hours with them discussing the relative merits of Picard Vs. Kirk.

But getting back to the story at hand - it appears the seemingly random magnet polarization of the "iPad 3" speaker which caused some iPad 2 cases not to work with the New iPad has also presented a challenge for this group. Their solution was to change the size and polarity of the magnets - 80,000 have been ordered and will be delivered in four weeks.

So in short, my first Kickstarter experience has been smooth but slow - very slow. If you are patient and interested in learning how products are made and want to learn about real-world manufacturing challenges, you likely want to order something from them soon.

HTML5 is being embraced by virtually every company as it a cross-platform solution to getting your content in front of users without the need for app stores or developing customized solutions for each device and OS you would like to have your content displayed upon. The good news is companies like Adobe have jumped on the bandwagon – ColdFusion 10 will support HTML5 based on news released this week in fact.

Then there is the “dark side” of HTML5 – basically some believe mobile devices and browsers aren’t ready for this new development language. This problem becomes an issue for video where 30-60 frame per second viewing is needed for optimal viewing quality.

It seems every company has decided that HTML5 is in their future. For example recent news about 3D-based modeling in your browser is possible thanks to a new company called Sunglass and LG showed off a new secure HTML5 viewer cable operators can use with their TVs this week at the Cable show in Boston, Mass.

In short, the future of development on the web looks like it will center on HTML5 and while it may seem logical that HTML – something which all sites employ will still be in use, this newest iteration is far more sophisticated and powerful than previous versions. There are new security, programming and design implications and for that reason it is worth taking a course or attending a conference on the topic to be sure you maximize your programming and design results.

As a disclosure TMC where I am CEO is a partner in DevCon5 perhaps the most well-established HTML5 design and development show in the world. Our sixth event takes place in New York July 23-24th, 2012 and the conference program is now available for your viewing pleasure.

I hope to see you there.

Sonos makes a great WiFi-based sound system allowing wire-free sound in any room in your home. The only problem with this strategy is that Apple and its AirPlay wireless streaming system is a peripheral competitor and when you go up against Apple well, let’s just say bad things happen to your company. So it makes sense to expand into areas which allow you to live within the Apple ecosystem.

Sonos hopes the leading-edge design of their latest SUB speaker will make customers shell out a very high price and show it off.

This is exactly why Sonos is expanding into the speaker market. They can easily make these speakers work with AirPlay and survive if their core business gets cannibalized by Cupertino.

Their latest entry into the speaker space is the Sonos SUB which is said to have clear, deep bass without excessive vibration due to the force-cancelling design of the speakers. They are positioned in a face-to-face manner. Moreover, the company is touting its zero-loss audio quality technology, sophisticated DSP circuitry, dual acoustic ports and all digital equalization.

I haven’t had a chance to listen to subwoofer or for that matter the Airplay 5 speakers but my sense is the price is high at $699 for the black lacquer version which will be available this June. If you are patient and/or more cost conscious you can wait till September and buy the black matte version which will be available at $599.

Let's be clear that the company has decided that this speaker is so gorgeous that it is not only worth paying absolutely top dollar for it but moreover that the design is so unique and leading-edge that you will want to showcase the subwoofer for the world to see. Most subwoofers are unglamorous as they are generally stuck behind a couch. In other words they are trying to make subwoofers into a premium category. This is similar to what Frank Purdue did with once-commoditized chicken, Grey Poupon did with mustard and Haagen-Daz did with ice cream.

The catch is these subwoofers only work with Sonos amplified components – in other words the CONNECT:AMP/ZonePlayer 120/ZonePlayer 100; PLAY:5; PLAY:3. It does not work with the non-amplified Sonos CONNECT/ZP90/ZP80. Why? Well I didn’t check with the company but I would surmise the delay imposed by other amplifying audio components is impossible to measure and subsequently the subwoofer could be out of sync.

It is worth mentioning if you search for AirPlay speakers on Amazon and sort by most expensive, the GenevaSound All-in-One system comes in at $1,199 and the Beloit 12 comes in at $799. The Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin AirPlay Speaker Dock is $599 and sounds amazing BTW.

When I get a chance to check this subwoofer out in person I will let you know if it blows me away to the point where I can say $600-$700 is a worthy sum to fork over.

Yesterday, Cablevision started to promote via an email their TV to GO service which allows customers to watch TV outside their home – as long as they have the Cablevision Optimum Online user name and password.

A sampling of networks available to Cablevision's TV to GO service

The catch is there is no single uniform web interface – the TV to GO portal gives you access to a number of networks which require you to click and then authenticate. Authentication is done via a popup window created by your cable provider and once completed you are free to view content the partner/provider offers.

Once clicking on the Speed 2 network and clicking on the login screen you are presented with a number of cable and satellite partner choices

Some of the content providers are as follows: HBO GO, MAX GO, MSG Varsity, BTN, YES, CNN, TNT and TBS.

I tested this service out with the Speed 2 network on a PC and it worked flawlessly.

Although this is a step in the right direction the lack of uniformity of web video interfaces is a stumbling block as it is not simple to find the programming you want. Still, much of this content is available online ONLY through such a procedure meaning users will have to get used to it if they want legal access.

If you happen to be a customer of Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications or Time Warner Cable, there is some really good news in the form of an official sharing agreement of WiFi spectrum allowing customers of any of these cable companies to gain access to the WiFi networks of any of the companies.

In Norwalk, Connecticut or Cablevision country, you could drive a few dozen miles in one direction and run into a Cox Cable jurisdiction and a few dozen miles in another direction gets you into Time Warner territory. Of course your situation may vary but it is great to know that as you travel around the US you will have access to lots of access points which were once off limits.

In April, 2010 some of these providers stuck a similar deal but to date I have never been able to successfully use WiFi belonging to the other providers - just Optimum WiFi provided by Cablevision.

Perhaps I will have better luck with the new network which has the SSID of CableWiFi. In a perfect world - you log onto this network and use it as you roam this vast country we call the U S of A.

The best news is as 4G providers start to become more restrictive on their bandwidth use, WiFi networks provided by the cablecos will come to the rescue meaning consumers will have to think long and hard before switching from cable to telco-based service home broadband.

Could Verizon and AT&T counter this offer with their own "bundle" of wireless and landline service? Yes, absolutely. It remains to be seen if they care enough about their landline businesses to worry about this new or at least more unified threat.

Hat Tip: PC World

See other related posts written by me:

If you use multiple monitors you have no doubt noticed it can get annoying to have to go back and forth between them to access specific functions like the Start menu. Well, it seems people at Microsoft too have noticed there is a productivity hit to having to move your mouse back and forth across potentially huge screens.

And a result Microsoft has released its multi-monitor improvements in its Windows 8 Release Preview and the good news is you can access essential Windows functions on all the monitors connected to a system. This is great news not only for users who have multiple monitors of the same size but for those who are accessing a display on a projector or a large screen TV.

Often I have noticed it can be difficult to set up an external monitor or projector which is used infrequently. Part of the reason has to do with the various screen sizes and the fact that the target monitor an audience will see may or may not have the Start Menu on it as well as other functions - depending on whether the displays are mirrored or extended.

The good news is, now, less time in meetings can be devoted to setting monitors up and more of it can be focused on the work at hand.

Engadget has a video worth checking out and for the life I me I can't figure out how to embed.

I have been fortunate enough in my career to do something I love – cover technology and be involved in all the most innovative happenings from the early eighties until today. Tech is one of the markets which experiences constant change, moreover, the ability to learn something new presents itself virtually every day. Whether you are a system administrator, programmer, database designer or microprocessor designer you are not only in demand, you are able to constantly do new and innovative things in the course of your work.

Of course some jobs are better than others and if you do not keep up you may find your skills become obsolete. Furthermore, not every moment of a techie’s life is exciting but what has been constant for three decades is techies are in demand, treated well and given numerous opportunities for advancement.

In addition, as the US sees more international competition for jobs, it is imperative that high school and college students look towards math and science because this is where the future jobs are.

As a child I was always fascinated by tech and gadgets. I even discovered programming in my teens and found I loved it as well. But like most high school students I thought I knew everything and subsequently decided that I wouldn’t need math so I tried to avoid it whenever possible.

As it turns out I ended up in UCONN’s School of Engineering because I wanted to learn about computers and there was no non-engineering alternative at the time in this university (I didn’t want to switch to another). I originally thought I was going to be a biology major but I realized that programming and computers excited me more than categorizing animals, examining mitochondrial DNA and studying the makeup of cell walls.

Because I went through this engineering program – sometimes kicking and screaming, I prepared myself for a career where I am able to meet with and understand what virtually any company in the tech space does.

Did I mention there were over 10 math classes engineers had to take? If I could do it over again, I would pay really good attention in Advanced Math in high school – this was a foundational course I didn’t think I would ever need. Doing really well in this one class could have made my college math and physics courses much less challenging.

Fast forward to today - as the CEO of a media company focusing on tech and communications, I am the luckiest person around. This is primarily because I am at a competitive advantage as most of my peers don’t have such a degree. When you consider how much technology has changed media in the last few decades (we used to call it publishing in fact) you realize that because of what I learned at a great engineering school I've been able to grow a rapidly evolving company as it navigated the changing world of the internet, search engine optimization and the like.

The benefit of studying engineering is that it taught me to solve problems and this background has given me a foundation which has and will continue to help me for a lifetime.

I consider what I did infinitely repeatable – any student who likes technology – video games, tablets or other tech, should really delve into math and science and consider an engineering degree. Even if you aren’t a gadget person, you should consider this field as it is amazing, rewarding and exciting.

You may argue that you really don’t love math and science or even engineering but my response would be that it is better to like what you do and be able to use it to support a family than have a degree in something you love and graduate with little or no job offers and end up living in your parent’s basement for years.

Our economy has been uncertain for more than a decade and if I was a student I would seriously consider a career path where I am likely to be able to graduate and get a job quickly. I would argue this is even more the case if you are taking out a student loan. Yes, you hear people give advice like only do what you love – but I know too many people qualified for jobs which don’t exist and who are jobless with mountains of debt. This doesn’t seem to be a great way to start off your career or independence.

In my home state of Connecticut, the challenge is we are falling behind the rest of the country when it comes to science – in actual terms we are holding steady but others are achieving higher rates. Even though Connecticut is ahead of the 2011 average, seven states just pushed ahead of us on the national ranking.

This is sad news for my fellow residents of the Nutmeg State. You see, I firmly believe the answer to the nation’s economic problems is to increase employment and science and math proficiency will aid in achieving this goal. To that end, all states need to improve in both areas and fast.

I have complained before about having gone from a culture obsessed with NASA to one fixated on the Kardashians, Jersey Shore and other forms of entertainment which seem to be more focused on atrophying our brains than enriching them. It is time to reverse this trend.

Before I put the soap box away I want to remind readers that the world is the most competitive it has ever been and workers in any country could take your job tomorrow – usually with the click of a mouse. A site like Elance, for example, allows a user to hire a contractor anywhere in the world and to date, the site has almost 1.5 million registered contractors and is responsible for at least half a billion dollars’ worth of work being transacted. Elance, and in fact many employers, could care less where you live as long as you can get a job done – well and cost-effectively. So you can see, the more relevant education and experience you have, the more likely you are to find work.

Last week I was up at the University of Connecticut Storrs campus for an Engineering Advisory Board meeting with the faculty and other members of industry to give our input on ways to make the school better. The great thing about UCONN is they have been improving the school in general and the School of Engineering in particular. They are laser-focused on taking this institution to the next level.

The good news for qualified students is the more of them who are admitted, the more the university can reinvest in making the school better. It is worth pointing out that admission is not limited to Connecticut residents or even US citizens. The information we gathered at our meeting was fantastic. Last year saw about 50 new computer engineers enrolling and this year that number has gone to at least 80 – a 60% increase. The number could go higher still. Another professor in the room, from Yale, said they are noticing similar enrollment trends.

More good news courtesy of Reda Ammar, PhD Professor and Department Head, Computer Science and Engineering and Alexander Russell, Professor, Computer Science and Engineering & Mathematics:

10 of our faculty are winners of the prestigious NSF CAREER award; three hold named professorships.

Our faculty are internationally-recognized leaders in bioinformatics, networking, and security.

Our research expenditures have grown to $2.7M annually.

Our undergraduates are in intense demand: nearly 100% of our graduates immediately join industry or academia.

Our graduate students are commanding prestigious positions in academia.

In addition, in our meeting we were told the school is building a new 70,000 square foot engineering building, they have recently purchased a $600,000 HPC machine for student use and $825M will be spent on a biosciences research center.

In short, UCONN is investing in making the school better for students and graduates of the Computer Science and Engineering department seem to have wonderful opportunities ahead of them. Besides, this institution is involved in really fascinating research in areas from voting machines to security.

In high school, I didn’t know the wonders of engineering and I might never have have chosen this education path if it wasn’t the only way to learn about computers at the school I was in. But now, I would consider any other education and career path to have been the wrong one. I am sure my choices aren’t correct for everyone but I can say the following with a high degree of confidence: if you are looking for a stable career which has a high likelihood of being financially secure for years while being intellectually stimulating, your chances of making this goal a reality will increase if you focus on doing really well in school, your SATs and then, apply to an engineering school.

And maybe someday soon, your company will be responsible for inventing the next must own-gadget, app or life-saving vaccine. With all the global excitement surrounding the Facebook IPO, we should all be reminded that technology innovation not only allows individuals to change the world but it can be financially rewarding as well.

Yes Virginia, P/E ratios still matter

Two days ago I wrote a piece trying to justify how Amazon could have a P/E ratio 16x higher than Apple. In short, I couldn’t. Recently Rocco Pendola wrote a piece which says P/E ratios don’t mean much, instead good management does (a paraphrase). He says, “This is not your Grandfather's stock market.”

And it seems he is correct. His article is actually titled “Sell Amazon, Buy Apple,” the exact opposite advice I gave.

But then again, I remember hearing for 3-4 years in the late nineties that profits don’t matter for public companies because if you have earnings you can then have a P/E ratio assigned to you. Ludicrous right? But it seemed the entire financial and tech community was convinced the rules had changed and earnings no longer mattered. They were right until most every investor who believed this lost almost everything.

Today, Robert Weinstein writes you should Buy Apple & Sprint while shorting Amazon. He believes the reason Apple is not trading higher has to do with the retail investor who can’t stomach stock prices which are sky high.

Here is a salient excerpt from his piece:

Amazon has a nosebleed trailing 12-month P/E of 185. That means that based on the results of the past 12 months, it will take 185 years of operation to produce enough profit to equal the cost of a share.

I am not a financial analyst – but P/E ratios seem like a fundamental tool investors use to make investments over time. Sure there can be dislocations for a while but it would seem over time, the value of any enterprise will be based on its earnings over time.

Disclosure: I have owned Apple shares for a while and have no plans at this moment to short Amazon – where I am a more than loyal customer

If ads on the Kindle Fire Welcome Screen are successful, others will follow

There are a few things which are well known about Amazon’s Kindle Fire. First of all at $199 the company either loses money or at best breaks even depending on which analyst you speak with. We also know the version of Android the device runs is unusual as Amazon has its own proprietary shell around it.

And just like a company can pay to have a promotion on the Amazon PC home page it is being reported that Amazon is considering charging between $600,000 to $1 million for the rights to have ads displayed on the welcome screen.

Will this ad be shown on current Kindle Fires or perhaps a new ad supported model? Well the answer is not known at this point.

This approach is far different than that of Apple who has implemented ground breaking minimalist designs not only on its devices’ home pages but in its retail stores.

But consumers have shown a willingness to be flexible when it comes to saving money. Witness the success of the Kindle Fire as an example.

If Amazon is very successful selling home page advertising and such ads become popular and the consumer likes the model, there is a natural industry progression we can expect.

First off, a question… What company comes to mind when I say Internet ads. OK, I get it – today the answer is Facebook but in general, Google – right? And what company has the market-leading smartphone OS? You guessed it – at least till Facebook develops one, its Google again.

So doesn’t it make sense that Google will want in on the action and will start to integrate ads into the home pages of Android phones allowing consumers, carriers and equipment makers to subsidize the price of the phone with honest to goodness product pitches?

This potential trend is a real possibility and consumers have shown themselves to be very willing to take subsidized devices in exchange for long-term contracts. They also tolerate ads on TV, radio and even their streaming radio courtesy of services like Pandora. Ad supported gadgets may be the next frontier and if Amazon is successful, we may see the market scramble to emulate and/or improve upon its model.

Now that was fast – Pinterest just raised $100M at a valuation of $1.5B in a round of funding led by Japanese e-commerce site Rakuten Inc. Pinterest's existing venture-capital investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, FirstMark Capital and Bessemer Venture Partners also participated according to a press release.

Hiroshi Mikitani, CEO of Rakuten said: "While some may see e-commerce as a straightforward vending machine-like experience, we believe it is a living process where both retailers and consumers can communicate, discover, and curate to make the experience more entertaining. We see tremendous synergies between Pinterest's vision and Rakuten's model for e-commerce. Rakuten looks forward to introducing Pinterest to the Japanese market as well as other markets around the world."

And the Japan connection makes sense as I have recently detected a dearth of Hello Kitty pins.

Seriously though, this is a staggering valuation growth rate as the company was just valued at over $200M late last year.

The timing for this transaction couldn’t be better as Facebook is still in the hype phase – investors are scrambling to be part of it and the demand for new social offerings seems to be at an all-time high. Moreover the potential large-scale defection of Facebook advertisers that some are predicting as a result of the public news of GM getting poor ad results hasn’t happened – at least yet.

Of course the pin-board based social network is new, growing quickly at over 20M users and is looking for a business model. The good news is a number of companies have said the visual social network drives more traffic to their sites than even mighty Facebook.

The challenge of course is how to turn those eyeballs into cash.

That will be the challenge – but if the site is already connecting buyers and sellers, there should be a way to take a piece of the transactions being generated.

At least that is what the investors paying the ever-escalating price the company’s shares are going for are hoping.

In case you missed Interop 2012 in Las Vegas and even if you were there – I have some really good news for you. TMC was there and we shot about seven hours of the most important and engaging interviews possible. We have all the companies you need to know about in spaces such as private and public cloud to big data, analytics, network testing and more. We spoke with the small upstarts and the giants like HP, Cisco and IBM. In short we wanted to present you with a wealth of information which you could use to make better decisions in your companies.

Does a vendor you are looking to buy from have a solid plan for its future – the answer is likely in these videos. Do they have a product which makes your job easier? Again, the answer is below. Do they have a solution to your company’s increasing reliance on AWS – something your IT department has little to no influence over? You know what I am going to say don’t you?

What about solutions to the problem of your departments storing information in the public cloud which may be in violation of numerous regulatory agencies – SARBOX/HIPAA, etc.? Again, the answers you seek are below.

Trends can be boiled down into software defined networking, faster connections (40G and 100G), WAN acceleration as well as cloud, cloud and more cloud – private and public.

I have some of the videos below highlighted and a full list in a spreadsheet follows. I hope you find them useful.
