How Google Can Win The TV Wars

April 17, 2009

Last night I saw Seal in concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and as I watched and heard some songs which I didn't like, I pictured myself clicking the thumbs down button on Pandora - the user-configurable online radio station which allows you to choose which songs you don't want to hear. The ability to choose what I listen to and watch - via DVR technology has transformed the way we want to consume content and this unprecedented flexibility continues to shatter media consumption habits.

The idea is not lost on Shiva Rajaraman, a senior product manager for YouTube who says, "We think the prime-time slot of the future is very much user-programmed." Shiva is absolutely right and this concept is a natural evolution of user-preferences blended with content delivery systems which will allow us to watch what we want, when we want.

I have discussed the idea of having Pandora become the conduit for video in the past and while the company obviously has technology which allows users to experience new music of a similar nature to other songs they like, it will take time and lots of money for Pandora to become the TV of the internet.

TMCnet for iPhone, Asia, Jobs, Cable, Satellite and More

April 15, 2009

As TMCnet has expanded I have to admit it is tough to keep track of all the sites we have which can help you in your job. To that end I decided to take a moment and list some of them which you may not be aware of. I thought this entry made sense as I have received some comments about how TMC should launch some of the sites listed below. This shows me there are just so many things we do that our 2-3 million unique visitors each month may not be aware of.

AT&T Looks to Extend iPhone Contract

April 15, 2009

Countless friends and business associates are interested in getting an iPhone but don't want to use the AT&T network. In fact when giving people advice on phones to purchase - if I do mention the iPhone I always have to warn them of the AT&T network. Regardless of AT&T's marketing regarding more bars in more places and the best coverage in the world, the AT&T Wireless network is simply not as good as Verizon Wireless.

Verizon knows this and keeps investing in its network to make sure it doesn't fall behind.

TMC Builds You Online Communities

March 26, 2009

Many people in the communications space have asked me recently what TMC's secret is. After all, we are in the toughest media environment of our lifetimes and we produced our best show ever and have more paying customers online than at virtually any other time in our history.

The answer may lie in a bit of luck and some skill. The lucky part is we built our first online community for a customer about a decade ago.

Nortel Asks for Executive Bonuses

March 20, 2009

A shot of the Ottawa River in Canada. Click to enlarge.

It is certainly a tough time for Nortel to be trying to get a court to approve senior level management bonuses as just south of Canada here in the US, the government is focusing on taxing bonuses to employees of TARP recipients to death. The good news here is these bonuses - unlike many on Wall Street seem to be tied to cost-reduction and reducing the company's focus - or selling off parts of the business.

Despite Economy, Communications Doing Surprisingly Well

March 4, 2009

I have just completed a whirlwind tour of the Channel Partners show in Las Vegas, Comptel in Dallas and I have had many meetings in the Dallas area and what I have found from the 50+ people I have met with this week is the communications space is doing very very well.

Everyone at the companies I have met with are cautiously optimistic. The cautious part is because they aren't sure if we are going into depression 2.0.

But overall the trend is companies are more likely to reevaluate their equipment and service providers and cut costs by going to companies providing the best value.
