Dialogic Connections 2010 Live Blog

November 17, 2010

I am in Budapest, Hungary today and am live blogging the Dialogic Connections event which is hosting a few hundred partners and customers from around the world. A bit of trivia before we get started - Brad Pitt may be staying in our hotel the Hotel Kempinski. One of the people at the event may have seen him last night but then again there may have been a few drinks involved - so don't hold me to this. Apparently Mr. Pitt is is in Budapest right now according to many of the delegates here who were quick to check Google to ensure he is really in the country.

I am speaking in about an hour and will be interviewing Dialogic execs Doug Sabella and Kevin Cook. Hopefully I will remember what they say so I can report on it later.

Ixia Shows Testing Not a Bad Place to be

November 13, 2010

The tech and communications markets have been generally stable and if anything a beacon of light in the turbulent waters of the general global economy. Specifically though the testing market is doing fairly well – if you are in the right segments of course. Let’s just say circuit switched testing isn’t going to be a hotbed of growth anytime soon.

One of the players in the market Ixia, has been aggressively consolidating the space and looking to become very well-rounded in the last few years acquiring the Catapult and Agilent N2X Data Line.

Over the Top Video a Threat Today?

November 8, 2010

Gary Kim has interesting thoughts about whether consumers are cutting the TV cord or the current subscriber losses we are seeing are due in-part to the economy and consumers deciding to forgo payments on cable.

Here is an excerpt:

Still, that could lead to years of trouble, and could lead to a definitive shift to online video if the content providers decide to shift more support to online delivery.

Some 13 percent of current multichannel video subscribers in the United States say they are "somewhat" or "very" likely to cancel their current subscription in the next 12 months, and not sign up with a competing provider, according to a survey of 2,000 U.S. households recently conducted by Strategy Analytics (News - Alert).

Alcatel-Lucent Turning the Corner?

November 5, 2010

After a number of years and some challenging times after the merger - Alcatel-Lucent the combination of New Jersey-based Lucent and Paris-based Alcatel is turning the corner making a quarterly profit and displaying more confidence about its future. Kevin O'Brien at the New York Times explains the company reported its first profitable quarter of the year, posting €25 million, or $35.3 million, in earnings compared to a €182 million loss in the third quarter a year earlier. Moreover sales rose 10.5 percent to €4.1 billion.

Although Asian competition from ZTE and Huawei is strong, the company certainly benefited from the implosion of Nortel and we'll see if they can ride this momentum out and keep the profits coming.

TMCnet's Ed Silverstein has more and The Motley Fool suggests Alcatel-Lucent is the next Nortel - waiting to implode.

Tehrani on Future of Broadband

November 2, 2010

Thank you all for coming to hear my keynote speech at Broadband Expo 2010 in Dallas, Texas. I really enjoyed the dialogue during and after the presentation.

One point which has come up frequently in my writings in the past and was more clear than ever in my conversations - is that content is still king - in fact after the Fox Vs. Cablevision war we witnessed this past month - it seems obvious that content is now emperor.

Here is a PDF of the presentation.

TV End Game has Google Written All Over It

October 22, 2010

After a whirlwind tour of SATCON and Content & Communications World which took place last week, 4G World and Interop which took place this week and over a hundred meetings, I find myself ruminating over numerous discussions about where things are headed – in terms of content, technology, entertainment and apps.

There are macro trends which are intersecting and diverging and as much as I would like to say I have 100% clarity about it all, I don’t – but I do believe I have enough observations to share in order to get investors and innovators thinking about what the future will look like.

Over the last 30 years the rise of cable and then satellite radio shows consumers will pay money for content and in many cases for the ability to reduce the amount of commercials they consume.

But this idea is under attack from yet another trend emerging over the last few years.

Fox Pulls Business and More from Cablevision

October 18, 2010

Update - The post originally said Fox pulled News but it instead pulled its Business channel - news is still there.

I was not amused to see this message on the TV when I got to my office. I am sure I am not alone. Hopefully the situation is resolved soon.

ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide Available

October 1, 2010

The ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide is here and if you are flying to the show - you may want to download it to your Kindle/laptop/iPad/netbook/smartphone or print it. I am on the plane now and we have the equivalent of a 300 baud modem's worth of bandwidth so I can't download it but as I recall it is over 100 pages and gives you a solid overview of the dozen conferences taking place next week.

In addition it shows you the exhibit hall with over 200 exhibitors and which sections correspond to which technology.

I have this dream that I will have enough time to go through the directory and point to some of the interesting highlights in a blog post.

We'll see how that works out.

Here is the PDF and it is fairly compressed down to 5 Megs as I recall - we may be getting a higher res one soon as well in case you have the bandwidth.

Sleeping Spouses Rejoice: TV Ads get Quieter

October 1, 2010

Federal government intrusion into the lives of its citizens has gotten pretty bad these past ten years and it seems we lose rights and more privacy each month. I'll be on an airplane later today and the whole removing shoes, laptops and belts routine is not something I'm looking forward to.

Having said that, I am happy that politicians have decided to deal with commercials which are much louder than other programming. I think it is absolutely crazy that we are still fumbling for remote controls late at night to lower the volume of a screeching ads. Actually it is interesting that TV sets haven't dealt with the problem on their own. Jacqui Cheng has more.
