Tech, Telecom: The Energy is Back

Communications, wireless, consumer electronics, cloud computing, virtualization -- in a turbulent market, it is good to be in technology.

Monster.com was one of the companies I considered to have a natural monopoly in the US job search market a decade ago. Amazingly, social media sites like LinkedIn and Craigslist are making Job sites less relevant and as a result Monster just picked up HotJobs for $225 in cash to shore up its decreasing market share.

A decade or so ago it was common knowledge that satellite radio would eventually make a huge dent in the business of traditional radio companies.

Patent Pooling Taking Off

I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company's profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Since my original entry, Microsoft, Nokia and Sony have signed up for the service.

ITEXPO East 2010 Miami a Great Success Thanks to You

Asterisk Gets a Song

Before checking out this post be sure to put on your propeller hat -- Oh and by the way turn down the sound if you ever want a chance at getting a date this decade.

GM Voices is a long-standing company recording voice prompts for companies. They are one of the most consistent companies I know in the telecom space -- exhibiting at shows for about 15-20 years.

Now the company has embraced video and social networking. Here is their video touting Digium's Asterisk. At the end -- there is a pitch for the company's services and I would give them a call as based on this video, they obviously would do almost anything to please you.

Danny Windham, Skype CEO Keynotes ITEXPO East 2010

The day you never get fired for buying "X" are over according to Windham who gave a keynote speech at ITEXPO East 2010 in Miami where he touched on how open-source has been responsible for reducing margins and costs in the communications space. Using Nortel as an example he explained how the value of the the company's enterprise assets dropped from a value of about $100 billion ten years ago to less than a billion dollars today. Open-source as he mentioned is one of the reasons for this drop in value and coincidentally, Digium is now ten years old according to Windham.

Yahoo's Jeremy Wadhams Kicks off ITEXPO East 2010 Keynotes

As Senior IT Architect at Yahoo, Jeremy gave a presentation about how his company embraced open-source telephony and how Asterisk has reduced communications costs for Yahoo! while boosting productivity.

"You can make anything work with Asterisk," was a key quote from the presentation. Another key point is the company uses Lifesize conference phones and Linksys phones.

ITEXPO East 2010 - Wish You Were Here

I am here at the Loews -- the show hotel at ITEXPO East 2010 in Miami and when I checked in I got a branded key from Digium/Asterisk to remind me to stop by the open-source communications leader's booth later this week. My team is feverishly wrapping up the last-minute details and we all can't wait to host you at the show. It should be a wonderful week of learning, networking and finding new and innovative products and services.
