Conan O'Brien Mentioned in ITEXPO Interview

January 16, 2010

As my readers know I spent a great deal of time interviewing (with a bunch of help from my editorial team - thanks team) speakers and other participants at ITEXPO and related events for the express purpose of giving attendees and others the chance to get the perspective of some of the best and brightest in the industry. To liven things up, I almost always ask a question which I hope will add some spice to an interview.

When I asked Mike Campbell, Director of Product Management, Solutions, for Sigma Systems, to make an outrageous prediction for 2010 he decided to make his about Conan O'Brien - check it out - pretty funny.

Tehrani at Winter Olympics

January 13, 2010

After ITEXPO in Miami next week, I come back home, witness TMC's move into a new headquarters, head back down to Miami for a bar Mitzvah and then finally head to the Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. While there I will get a chance to witness the Nortel/Avaya IP network which powers the games and I will also have a chance to see the many innovations associated with the event. Many are outlined in an excellent article by TMC's Brendan Read.

I am excited to be at the games - it is an opportunity not everyone gets and I look forward to watching as many of the events as possible and reporting on the happenings.

Google's Energy Ambitions and Smart Grid Implications

January 12, 2010

As I research Google's move into energy, I become fascinated by the idea that Google's influence on our lives may just be beginning. Sure the Google Toilet (video) may not be a real product but analysis of Google's potential in the smart grid market, coupled with the company's Android operating system leads at least one analyst, Jon Arnold to see a bright future of collaboration between smart devices in the home and the electrical grid.

I am sure we can all imagine connectivity between thermostats and a variety of electronic devices in the home which work together to reduce energy consumption. With global arctic temperatures turning arctic -- you may not be convinced global warming is real.

Google Breaks Cardinal Supplier Rule

January 11, 2010

There is an unwritten rule that companies who compete with their customers are inviting trouble. When companies break this rule, generally their competition will use this information against them when there is a bid on the table. Over time, when you break this rule, it bites you in the rear.

Companies like Intel, who have a dominant position in the market, are generally able to bend or break these principles to some degree but for most others, you know where to draw the line.

Survey: Mobile Phones Much More Favorable than Social Networks

January 11, 2010

In a tough decade, what could people count on to make their lives better? Communications - yes communications. 50% percent of people surveyed by Pew viewed the last decade unfavorably and 27% viewed it positively.

Here are some of the reasons they may have positive thoughts about the last ten years:

Most Tablets Will Fail

January 7, 2010

Hi all, here a small dose of reality. I know the world is tablet-crazy

and all and I hate to be the one breaking up the party but in reality those of us over 18, remember how tech works. Most of the tablets will die horribly. Perhaps content will interoperate between these larger than normal gadgets, making this a minor issue but it is very very unlikely that more than a handful of these devices will sell in volumes needed to be successful.

More on Avaya - Nortel Enterprise Event at ITEXPO

January 7, 2010

24 hours ago I excitedly shared the important news that Avaya will be at ITEXPO to discuss the acquisition of Nortel's enterprise assets. In one of the biggest communications deals in the market - two companies who were fierce competitors will be announcing their roadmap regarding how their merged product lines and staffs will look going forward.

Avaya will be at a special keynote lunch with analysts and yours truly who will speak with the company in a Q&A roundtable format in order to help the audience determine what the news means to them and how it will impact their business.

If you are a reseller, enterprise customer, SMB, partner and/or developer you cannot miss the event.
