Summa Networks Lets Smaller Carriers Compete with Large Telcos in IoT

Javier Martin, CTO of Summa Networks tells me his company’s next-generation HSS and HLR based on NFV and SDN allows providers to compete with large telecoms to take advantage of smart services. MVNOs and other carriers can just activate profiles to go from 3G to 4G he explained.

The multi-tenant system allows for operation in the cloud and is compliant with 3GPP Release 12. In addition, there are new functions dedicated to IoT and the licensing cost is quite attractive. The price starts at less than 20 cents per sub for a perpetual license and as the solution scales to the millions it decreases to a fraction of a cent.

The company has a pilot with CenturyLink where the HLR bridges from cable to mobile providing VoLTE as well as VoWiFi. It can also be used in a private network setting such as a campus – a hospital, etc.

Another configuration is what they have allowed Wisconsin based carrier DCC to do. With their solution, international roamers can have local service in the US at attractive prices.

They also allow carriers to provide custom offerings such as bundled streaming or Waze or whatever app the analytics they provide tells you your audience might want to spend money on.

Summa Networks wants to improve the relationship between carriers and providers. They are working to put their technology in the cloud and have experiments in the works with Amazon.

The bottom line: Smaller carriers and MVNOs will get more flexibility to deliver smart services and capitalize on IoT with Summa Network’s next gen HSS and HLR.
