TMC Offers Free International Magazines and Launches 5 New Titles

November 2, 2004

Please click here to subscribe to these free publications immediately.

In the last few days TMC has made some amazing announcements regarding our publications. The first bit of news is that our print publications are going digital, meaning they will be available via PDF. Instead of having to wait 2 weeks for the printer to print the magazine and another 2+ weeks for delivery, you will receive your magazine via an e-mail link that will allow you to download a PDF that includes hyperlinks allowing you to get more out of the magazine than print could ever provide. There is nothing like the flexibility of reading a PDF publication with good hyperlinks in it allowing you to go to definitions, stock quotes and other related sites with the click of your mouse.

Rates Technology Inc.

April 19, 2005

I have been hearing more and more rumblings in the VoIP industry regarding Jerry Weinberger of Rates Technology Inc. (RTI). I don't get too many people coming to me about patent issues so when I heard about this company, I decided to delve into this potential story a bit more. What intrigued me is that apparently RTI has no products... They exist to collect revenue from other companies.

I did some research and found that Rates Technologies has sued Nortel, Sharp Electronics and others.

Rates Technology and Alcatel

August 25, 2005

In my blog entry on Rates Technology Inc I mentioned Alcatel as in default. Specifically:

After it became impossible to get them covered, RTI recently filed suit for willful patent infringement against Centrepoint Technologies, Inc. for much less money than Mitel and Alcatel (they certainly are a smaller company).

Mitel Networks was sued for $945 Million; Alcatel was sued for $1.155 Billion; and their default is pending in USDC EDNY. Hello Direct, GN Netcom and GN had been sued by RTI for patent infringement, and they recently settled with RTI; the terms are being kept confidential

.

Since that time I have learned the court has vacated the default meaning it is now in the hands of California courts since Alcatel sued Rates Technology Inc. first in California.

Cingular Outage

September 18, 2005

Cingular had an outage this past weekend in the tri-state area according to this article. Apparently many of Cingular’s employees have been focused on restoring service in areas affected by hurricane Katrina and perhaps this outage in the northeast caught the company off guard and short-staffed.

Live In Toronto

September 27, 2005

I am in Toronto this morning speaking on call centers and enterprise VoIP. I was invited her by Interactive Intelligence and Vonexus. The last time I spoke in Toronto was about ten years ago. I was invited back then by a CTI association.

Plantronics Voyager 510S

September 30, 2005

I have been using the Plantronics Voyager 510S for over a month. I have used the headset every day and night during this time. I wanted to put it through its paces before writing about it. The precise product I have is the Plantronics Voyager 510S Bluetooth Headset System as it says here on the box.

The headset itself works with both an office phone and your bluetooth enabled phone/device.

Qualcomm VoIP

October 7, 2005

Perhaps the most exciting news in VoIP yesterday was the little-covered announcement of Qualcomm supporting the Philips electronics WLAN module meaning the marriage of WiFi and cellular is coming. The integrated system will connect to WLAN networks as well as to existing cellular networks, featuring compatibility with 802.11b and 802.11g protocols on CDMA2000 and WCDMA (UMTS) networks.

At least the technology for dual-mode devices is falling into place. The question now is whether there will be a way for us to get at it. Will cellular providers help us in acquiring devices that allow us to speak not only on cellular networks but WiFi as well?

Sources tell me some service providers are warming to the idea while others are not so happy with it.

Old McDonald Had Some WiFi

October 16, 2005

Fred Ziari seems to be the rural WiFi hotspot pioneer. By hotspotizing (did I just make up another word?) farmland he is pioneering efforts to put hotspots where they aren’t today and where they may never be if it was up to the local phone companies who see no profit potential by adding WiFi to areas where there are few customers.

How does Ziari make money? Well he doesn’t. You see his hotspot is free.

SonyEricsson Earnings

October 17, 2005

I blogged about SonyEricsson this weekend and today they announced their net profit rose 6 percent in the third quarter. Funny thing is that this article points out that the company is the sixth largest mobile-phone maker. At some point shouldn’t we be counting from the smallest. No disrespect intended of course to SonyEricsson as they make great products and are a relatively new phone player.

Excel Switching User Conference

October 18, 2005

I am keynoting the Excel Switching user conference tomorrow and am headed up to Boston now. I will be focusing on the future of VoIP. I am really looking forward to this presentation. I haven't been able to find a link to the seminar online and I guess it is invite-only so I hope to see those "invited" tomorrow.
