Great news for the IP communications market. ReefPoint Systems a big player in IP communications security -- focusing on FMC, IMS and UMA. The company has received $21 million in VC funding from American Capital and will soon announce a new CEO, Woody Ritchey and COO, Dennis Chateauneuf.

Ritchey worked at Cisco, Motorola, Arraycomm and AT&T. Chateauneuf worked at Sentito Networks, DTI Networks/Coppercom, Shiva, Sun and Wang labs.

Their products sit at the border of the Internet and the FMC core and provide.

Wireless Spectrum

Here are the details on the wireless spectrum auction held by the FCC. Some of the winners are JetBlue – yes the airline and AirCell who supplies private jets with wireless broadband equipment at the moment.

Yellow Stone Cell Phones

I have always wanted to go to Yellowstone National Park but haven’t had the chance. It seems that by the time I get there, I will be able to use my cell phone anywhere in the park. Or perhaps not if the anti-cell phone groups have their way.

Here is a story about the controversy over using cell phones in public parks. Does the safety afforded by cell phones make up for the fact that the noise they emit will be annoying to park goers? That is the question that will soon be answered.

My guess is that Yellowstone will allow more cell phone towers in the park.

Can You Sue Me Now

Apparently claiming you have the least dropped calls can get you the most legal papers from the lawyers of the competition. Sprint is suing (subscription required) Cingular over their new ad campaign regarding dropped calls.

This reminds me that the last time I was on the train from Connecticut to Manhattan my phone disconnected 3 or more times. I was using Verizon Wireless by the way. Someone sitting across from me was able to speak the entire way and he was using Cingular.

Perhaps the Cingular network is now better than Verizon. I would love to hear your feedback.

Houston WiFi

Houston has released a draft for city-wide WiFi according to Save Muni Wireless. Here are some interesting details from the blog entry: The City's vision is to apply ubiquitous, low-cost wireless Internet access as a foundation for the City of Houston to become the most efficient, effective and responsive city government in the nation—while stimulating economic development and promoting digital inclusion for low-income and disadvantaged residents. One remarkable part of this proposal is that it explicitly embraces the concept of "net neutrality". The City will require that the operator open up the network to wholesale service, which would allow any ISP to participate. Chalk that up to another exciting innovation that's being driven by muni networks. It would seem that in the long run, service providers will see more and more competition from the cities.

Interop

I spent a full day at Interop and got to cover the whole show in less than a day which is always a plus. In addition I even got a chance to hit a few receptions and see two wedding parties casually strolling through the casino.

Who would have thought that a strip of desert would become one of the most popular destinations in the country based on gambling, weddings and bachelor parties. Of course there is more... Sports, great restaurants, shows, etc but it is tough to fathom how quickly this strip of sand has blossomed in the past 15 years alone.

But back to the show, there were a few booths towards the front of the hall that did well and some others had good traffic depending on the appeal of their offerings.

Asia Telecom M&A

I while back I wrote about the M&A market in telecom and I didn't factor in the Asian players into my analysis. So in order to be balanced, I decided to get a perspective from someone who is intimately involved in the telecom market and who works for UT Starcom, a major Chinese telecom equipment provider. Farshid Mohammadi is a VoIP and IMS industry icon and couldn't be better positioned to tell us where the Chinese/Asian telecom players fit into the overall mix.

Here are his comments:

An interesting phenomena is happening. The Asian vendors who have been the beneficiary of more cost effective labor and manufacturing are finding that to succeed in international markets in any significant way, they would have to staff up in their beachhead markets.
