Net Neutrality: More Unintended Consequences

December 23, 2010

What if the FCC could force FedEx and UPS to charge the same rates for delivery regardless of how many days it takes to get a package delivered and/or the weight of a package?

Stairway to Trouble

A large tech company found many of its workers were using gadgets when walking up and down the stairs and as a result after numerous internal meetings they decided in order to create a better work environment they would communicate with the workforce about the perils of multitasking while walking on the stairs. As you might have guessed, the decision was made to put signs in the stairwells warning people to not multitask.

Grandstream GXV3175 a Solid IP Multimedia Value

December 14, 2010

Grandstream's Khris Kendrick discusses the GXV3175 as well as the company's other products such as a new cube camera

Grandstream has just released the GXV3175, a multimedia phone which features HD voice and video with the ability to connect the output of the video conference to an HDTV. Moreover, the Linux-based desk phone which sports an easy to use seven-inch touch-screen interface supports widgets for checking things like the weather or stock quotes.

There is support for  IM from Google, MSN and Yahoo! as well as social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Another great feature is integration with Photobucket and Flickr and other photo sharing services. This phone could very well replace a Sony Dash on a desktop as it not only does much of what that device does but adds real-time multimedia communications.

There are lots of other features including a 1.3 megapixel CMOS camera with privacy shutter as well as dual USB ports, integrated PoE, WiFi and memory card support.

Alcatel-Lucent Turning the Corner?

November 5, 2010

After a number of years and some challenging times after the merger - Alcatel-Lucent the combination of New Jersey-based Lucent and Paris-based Alcatel is turning the corner making a quarterly profit and displaying more confidence about its future. Kevin O'Brien at the New York Times explains the company reported its first profitable quarter of the year, posting €25 million, or $35.3 million, in earnings compared to a €182 million loss in the third quarter a year earlier. Moreover sales rose 10.5 percent to €4.1 billion.

Although Asian competition from ZTE and Huawei is strong, the company certainly benefited from the implosion of Nortel and we'll see if they can ride this momentum out and keep the profits coming.

TMCnet's Ed Silverstein has more and The Motley Fool suggests Alcatel-Lucent is the next Nortel - waiting to implode.

Interactive Intelligence Announces Positive Preliminary Earnings

October 12, 2010

There are a few things I wish for regarding earnings in the tech space.

  • I wish I had time to give my thoughts on every announcement
  • I wish they were all as good as what Interactive Intelligence just accomplished
In short the company just released preliminary third-quarter numbers and said they had nine orders over $1 million with two of them being larger than $2M. I am not sure how this compares with past quarters but regardless, these are significant customer sizes in an era of price compression.

The company says its cloud offering is doing well and you may recall company CMO Joe Staples spent some time recently (video) in the TMC Newsroom giving me details of the launch.

ININ expects total revenue to be between $41-$42 million with GAAP net income between $3.3-$3.9M. Last year the number was $2.8M meaning an increase of at least 17% over last year's sales.

According to founder and CEO Dr. Don Brown, the size of the deals gives the company increased operating leverage and revenue growth.

Here are additional details regarding the company's earnings:

Interactive Intelligence plans to issue a press release announcing its final 2010 third-quarter results Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. Eastern daylight time.
