60 Crucial IP Communications Interviews

September 5, 2008

Whenever I go to a conference, I learn a tremendous amount from the people I meet at the show. I really enjoy the impromptu networking which takes place at events as it allows me to learn so much about what is happening in the market. Ironically, I generally learn things I didn't think I would learn ahead of time. Quite often, I wish I would have known more about peoples' experiences before I met with them as it would allow me to be better prepared to ask pertinent questions.

I further wish I knew who was coming to events and and moreover I wish I could get a "brain dump" from them before the event so I could have a frame of reference before our conversations take place.

Imagine how much better networking at a show would be if I had an idea what people were generally thinking about the market before I even say hello.

In less than two weeks the world with gather at ITEXPO -- The World's Communications Conference to help select products for purchase, learn about the latest events in the telecom market and network with peers.

It is this last area where this blog entry should be of maximal benefit.

VoIP Salaries Rise Sharply in Q2

August 31, 2008

The financial news networks seem to thrive on giving us the negative news regarding the economy. Jobs being lost; wages decreasing and all sorts of other negative bits and pieces.

Well there is something you won't hear about if you focus all your time and attention on the network news. It seems in fact that there is some great economic news in the world of IP communications. In fact, VoIP jobs are rising in salary at a time when so many other jobs are not.

OnForce Inc., is an online jobs mart where employers and workers meet on the Internet and agree on an hourly rate and a recent report from the company shows growth in VoIP rates have increased from 1.5 to 1.95 between Q1 and Q2.

Communications, Speech Markets Have Positive Outlook

August 20, 2008

Two days -- two shows, two cities and two trains which left at dawn. Wow... What a rush. What I picked up from the Channel Partners (Boston) and SpeechTek (New York) shows is  the communications market and the call center market are doing well, based on what companies in the space tell me.

Yes, of course some sectors are doing better than others but some are amazingly strong...

Wireless Expense Management Channel

July 17, 2008

One of the hottest areas in the communications space is wireless expense management and as entire wireless costs worldwide continue to skyrocket, companies really need to do anything and everything they can to get a handle on what they are spending and why. It is for this reason I am happy to say TMC has partnered with Rivermine Software to launch a wireless expense management channel.

The goal of this microcommunity is to have a single place online where you can come and learn about the latest in the wireless expense managment space.

I should also point out Rivermine also sponsors the telecom expense management channel on TMCnet.

Feel free to bookmark them now and visit as often as you like.

Drive And Talk Via WiFi

June 26, 2008

Use that WiFi phone in the car... Good news for those of you who like your WiFi phone but just haven't been able to get it to work properly in the car. Now, you can use a WiFi phone or even take advantage of videoconferencing  while driving 70 MPH down the interstate.

This will come courtesy of Chrysler as many of their future cars will have a new entertainment system called uconnect which also has a 3G connection and in-car WiFi connectivity. The good news, we can really be connected wherever we are...

Build Communities With Google's Help

June 10, 2008

Let's say your company plays in a few different spaces such as information technology, security and storage. And let's say your company has decided to build a community of interest which is dedicated to a specific subject area as you are hoping like-minded people will visit the community regularly and begin to associate your company as a leader in the space and hopefully some of these people will become new customers.

In this example, your resources are limited and even if they aren't, you need to choose one of these above areas to build your community. Assume each of them has equal market sizes and growth rates and you need to determine where the highest level of search interest lies.

Using the updated Google Trends, you can now see a graph over time of search volume on a relative and absolute basis and this information can be exported for analysis.

You may find for example that storage interest spikes around the year-end holidays but also seems unusually high in May of each year... This information can be useful in your business as it helps you see how people are searching for various terms.

If you have read my blog before, you know TMC has been building communities (Global Online Communities, Channels) for companies in the communications and technology space for some time now.

Nortel's Joel Hackney Discusses Earnings

May 2, 2008

Nortel announced earnings today and to get more detail on the news I had a chance to speak with Joel Hackney, President of the Enterprise Solutions Group at Nortel.

Some details worth sharing... The company's net loss widened but revenue was up 11% and gross margins have been increasing for six quarters. Operating margin was just under 5% which is up from the prior year.

Overall, this interview shows that many communications companies continue to do well in a slower economy.

For more details, check out this podcast interview.

Communications Developer Call for Papers

April 8, 2008

Be sure to submit your call for papers entries for the Communications Developer show which will be collocated with ITEXPO later this year in the Los Angeles, California Convention Center.

The specific dates of the event will be September 16-18, 2008.

You know I have always been a huge fan of open APIs and the concept that communications will become embedded in other parts of our lives and software.

This trend is on the rise and we are happy that Communications Developer is the world's forum for software development in the communications space.
