It’s been a busy day in tech and communications news – so far these are a few of the stories worth knowing about:

Microsoft needs to get larger? Scott Rothbort at TheStreet gives us eight companies Microsoft should buy – and you know what, some of these make great sense such as Adobe & Netflix but in reading the article, I wonder if Yahoo! makes sense anymore. Then again a management shakeup could help get the company to start competing more effectively against Facebook and Google. There are some hosting/cloud vendors and hardware vendors suggested as well – but does Microsoft need to get bigger at this point? Many think it is too big already and if anything needs to start running in a more lean fashion – which of course means spinning some parts off or selling them. For more check out my critique of Microsoft and Steve Ballmer.

It’s raining iPhones: Earlier today I tweeted about the rumors surrounding the iPhone 5 but it seems perhaps – according to some analysts we will see not only an iPhone 5 this year but also an iPhone 4S. If Apple does come out with two new phones there will certainly be the potential for confusion in the market but if both phones are sufficiently differentiated from one another in features and cost it could really make life difficult for RIM, Nokia and Microsoft as Cupertino will have strong offerings the medium and high-ends of the market.

Reinventing the tracking device: Wired has an article about how complex p2p WiFi telematics systems are being experimented with to help reduce traffic congestion and to me this seems pretty silly as TomTom, Apple and Google already have much of this data via GPS devices located in hundreds of millions of cars. Do we really need a new and more complex investment from global governments which are mostly broke when there could be an app for that?

WiFi, WiFi Everywhere – Even in the air: Boingo is getting even better through its partnership with Gogo inflight wireless. Basically for the million plus Boingo users (like me) we can now access Gogo WiFi on flights from AirTran Airways, Delta Airlines, Virgin America, Air Canada, Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Frontier Airlines, United Airlines, and US Airways and pay around $5-$13 per flight for access based on flight duration. This deal is more about not needing to remember another password rather than saving money. Personally I think the airlines should be forced to chip in a few bucks towards passenger broadband access every time the pilot decides to make an unnecessary announcement about some trivial event taking place outside the windows which are always on the opposite side of the plane from where I’m sitting.

From breaking news to breaking tweets: Twitter launched a new guide for journalists and I am not thrilled with the ease of use of the new page they but the content is solid. Perhaps the best part of the guide is the testimonial from Jake Tapper of ABC News:

The way [Twitter has] been most useful is in terms of following people. I’ve been able to use it for reporting and to find sources. Last year when a health insurance company raised its premiums in California and it affected thousands of people, I didn’t know how to reach any of them, so I sent a Tweet out to my followers: “Is there anybody out there who is a customer of Anthem Blue cross who got their insurance premiums raised?”

@lemoneyes tweeted me that she had and so I followed her. I got her information through DM and then emailed her, we verified her situation and then we sent a camera crew to her. The next morning she was on ABC’s Good Morning America. There is no way I could have done that before.

Over the past decade, hundreds of companies have benefitted from TMC’s Community program, attracting a laser-targeted group of potential customers who are looking to learn about a specific topic area. TMC populates these communities with thousands of articles per quarter – which in turn attracts millions of interested viewers a year to our sponsors.

Sponsors can then offer these viewers more information about themselves – offer them coupons, a chance to visit them at a trade show or road show or whatever else they are looking to communicate to this group.

The most common question I am asked lately is how to build online communities and moreover companies in many new industries ask constantly about how TMC can help build these content-generated microsites for them.

As a result of these requests, we are now making these online communities available in multiple industries and we have a new free webinar you can attend titled “Building Communities Online: Reduce Marketing Spend While Boosting Sales, Search and Social Initiatives” which you can attend on March 30th, 2011, from 2:00pm – 3:00pm EST.

I think you’ll find this Webinar quite valuable, as it will cover how to improve your marketing ROI by integrating results currently driven by search ads, SEO, social media and thought leadership into one integrated campaign. The Webinar will also cover:

How the concept of Targeted Marketing has evolved

How to build a news-generated, search optimized community online

How your Online Community is more cost-effective, and powerful, than Search Click Ad campaigns

Common reasons why some Online Communities fail

Why it is essential to partner with a respected editorial team when building your community

Feel free to click here to learn more and register. Thank you and I hope to see you there!

As TMCnet's Tom Keating mentions on his blog, there are many factors to consider in the fight for mobile supremecy between Apple, Google Android and yes, even Microsoft. Tom's point about Microsoft injecting itself into the Android relationship with carriers to become the defacto search engine has even begun to happen already.

But what caught my eye regarding the controversy is will Apple become the defacto high-end alternative that is priced out of the reach of most of the market?

The answer may lie in production numbers alone.

You see, the Apple hardware is virtually unchanged from iPod to iPhone to iPad so economies of scale work in the company's favor.

However, Android devices are gaining massive share. If these gadgets can also leverage the same hardware with other mobile operating systems then they too can take advantage of the same efficiencies. Perhaps Samsung and HTC are best positioned in this regard as an HTC device, for example, can do double-duty as an Android and Windows Phone 7.

A while back I asked Nokia execs about the disadvantage they had in supporting a plethora of form factors while Apple gets away with one and they didn't have a good answer.

But if a phone manufacturer can leverage multiple operating systems to drive scale they can then compete more effectively with Apple. Again, companies like HTC and Samsung may be in a great position here.

When I saw the Droid X I immediately thought of how the PC overtook Apple's share because of the massive price/performance advantage. If we take my personal experience of implementing desktop publishing back in the 80s, the price for a loaded Mac was over $4,000 if my memory serves and you could get a PC clone with equivalent or greater processing power for less than half the cost.

But in the smartphone and tablet markets the prices are in the hundreds not thousands, meaning even if you can undercut Apple on price because the Android market explodes with growth and Windows Phone 7 devices use the same hardware, it is tough to see the prices for non-Apple devices having a dramatic price advantage. Obviously this is a fluid situation and one I will watch closely.

But to me the plethora of Android devices is the challenge Apple will have to contend with - as well as the plethora of marketing campaigns. Remember Gateway Computers for example? They were a hot PC maker for years using the branding of cows in massive magazine inserts to push their cause and increase awareness.

Then you had Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, Toshiba and a slew of other companies - each with its own marketing ideas and each with its own successful sales strategies.

But more than marketing it is the form factors which will be worth watching closely. Is the ideal tablet size larger or smaller than the iPad? Is not supporting Flash going to be a factor in Apple losing lots of sales? I already know people who have returned iPads because they don't support Flash - will this become a differentiator for other device makes in 2011?

Consumer electronics have become more important to consumers over the years and this trend is fantastic for the market, especially Apple who is the hands down leader and trend-setter. Next year, we will get to see if other companies are able to at least equal the street cred of Cupertino.

Don't expect a dull moment in 2011 or beyond for that matter. And we'll see lots of noise from the Android community at CES and TMC's ITEXPO in January and February.
I realized every website had to eventually become broadcast TV stations and newspapers in one.

And now, that is exactly what TMC provides sponsors - a third-party content-generating machine which creates targeted news which in-turn brings a large, laser-focused audience based precisely on specific terms and concepts.

The benefit for readers is we continue to reinvest our resources - many of which come from this cloud-based community building and SEO model right back into more reporters, editors and designers meaning more targeted and in-depth news and analysis for people looking to make purchasing decisions.

What is most gratifying is the smallest companies choose to work with us to grow their brands and we also have major players as customers such as RIM and Alcatel-Lucent.

Obviously I am biased but I see this community concept as the most underestimated product on the Internet. Most people don't understand it. They think all the traffic in the world needs to come to their site exclusively but in over-focusing on one destination, they lose the massive advantages afforded them by taking advantage of news-search and huge content archives which once again, laser target their exact audience who eventually see their message and become customers.

One customer said it best when he told me he sees his own site as akin to Saks 5th Avenue but his community on TMCnet is like opening a store in a popular mall which gets even more traffic than his website.

We would love candidates with 3-5 years of marketing experience as well as someone who is passionate and understands the web, SEO and technology.

Feel free to forward me resumes and I will be sure to pass along the info to my hiring team for consideration.

Thanks in advance.

The ITEXPO West 2010 Show Guide is here and if you are flying to the show - you may want to download it to your Kindle/laptop/iPad/netbook/smartphone or print it. I am on the plane now and we have the equivalent of a 300 baud modem's worth of bandwidth so I can't download it but as I recall it is over 100 pages and gives you a solid overview of the dozen conferences taking place next week.

In addition it shows you the exhibit hall with over 200 exhibitors and which sections correspond to which technology.

I have this dream that I will have enough time to go through the directory and point to some of the interesting highlights in a blog post.

We'll see how that works out.

Here is the PDF and it is fairly compressed down to 5 Megs as I recall - we may be getting a higher res one soon as well in case you have the bandwidth.

One wonders however if this staggering low rate isn't just consumers not wanting to give up their iPhones.

Kim also mentions Verizon in his post and I agree that the real test comes when the iPhone gets offered on this network - if ever. My experience has shown that around 50% of AT&T users would switch to Verizon based on casual conversations. The impact of so many millions of customers switching carriers would obviously mean the burden of supporting all this wireless data will switch from one carrier to another quite quickly.

This brings us back to AT&T who has a limited amount of time to improve it's network before it has to deal with real competition from the Verizon iPhone, Droid X or new Blackberry device said to be yet another iPhone killer.

I am fortunate that I get to speak reporters about my company from time to time and whenever I do I always worry until the article comes out. Reporters are busy (speaking from experience) and they don't always get all the facts right. I always blame myself when this happens - after all if you communicate in a clear, concise manner with an organized, structured system of segueing between topics, it is much easier to follow.

Personally I have sat in briefings with charismatic tech leaders who spend 30 minutes talking and when I look at my notes, I wonder what the heck was said. Someday I vow to teach classes on how to speak with the media but in the mean time I am very proud to say that TMC was just written up in the Norwalk Hour - our local newspaper. We even made the front page of the business section.

The article written by Chris Bosak is one of the most accurate articles I have ever seen. He absorbed my fast-talking, excited, enthusiastic rambling, took notes on paper and produced something I could read and say - hey this is exactly what we do. Thanks Chis - great article and thanks to the Norwalk Hour, the TMC team, our customers - readers, sponsors, advertisers, exhibitors, partners and suppliers.

Here is the article (registration required) and some excerpts.

While some media companies downsize and struggle to gain back employees, Norwalk-based TMC has grown to the point where it needed more space.

The company also produces live events and produces videos for customers, but its various "communities" on the Internet are now TMC's core business.

The communities are geared toward a specific audience and TMC staffers and freelancers produce stories related to the subject. The sites, most of which are sponsored, are constantly updated as new stories and news become available.

Content volume helps the communities reach the top of Internet search engines. That is attractive to the sponsors of the communities.

"We're selling premium real estate," Tehrani said. "This is ocean-front real estate. By working with us, our sponsors rank high on a specific subject area."

TMC currently has 130 communities -- from next generation communications to headsets -- and at least 15 in development. Rich Tehrani said the company will eventually expand beyond the technology arena.

Tehrani said companies want to sponsor sites because they can not replicate the volume of stories produced by TMC.

"Companies can't accomplish this on their own. They try," Rich Tehrani said. "My father used to say: 'If you don't market, you don't exist.' Now you can say: 'If you don't show up on the first page of search engines, you don't exist.

"The most important part of the transformation was taking a publishing company and turning it into a media company powered by technology," he added. "Advertising is a commodity so we differentiate ourselves by developing targeted communities."

Not everything TMC has done over the years has been a success, but the company has never been afraid to try something new. That attitude has helped the company survive 38 years, Rich Tehrani said.

"The most important thing we've been able to do is react quickly and evolve," he said. "We're not afraid to fail. We're not afraid to make mistakes. You learn from it and do better next time."

Nadji Tehrani, who at 74 still shows up for work every day, said hiring the right people is another key to success for any company.

"We have a great staff," he said. "Everyone works hard. That's one of the things that makes me very proud -- to have this many quality people."

How do companies make it through gut-wrenching industry and technological change without going under?

I do my best to wish every TMC a team member a Happy TMC Anniversary and as such the start date of all of our full-time members are in my calendar so I can be the one to send them this greeting (If I forgot you in the past - please accept my apologies). Last week I noticed that it was the anniversary of Nadji Tehrani, the company Founder & Chairman, my father and the person who decided to start this company in 1972. Funny, I never noticed his start date on my calendar before - and it occurred to me that this was TMC's 38-year anniversary.

Wow! Has it been that long?

And as I reminisced about the past decades I thought it would be instructive to go over the lessons we learned which kept us alive as markets and industries changed. I have also added in some of my personal philosophies as I feel these are interrelated in keeping our company and perhaps yours successful.

The Customer is First

I am thankful that the TMC team has always been the most customer-friendly of any company we compete with based on comments we regularly receive from customers. We are far from perfect and we are constantly trying to improve but to make it at TMC you need to put the customer first. And by the way, customer should refer to other team-members - showing respect, courtesy and care for those people you work with and our end customers is what has allowed us to survive and thrive when the going gets tough.

Take nothing for granted

The list of competitors TMC has had these past decades is incredible. Oftentimes we competed against companies which were considered impervious to competition. In the nineties we had a competitor who had a massive trade show in Los Angeles which companies in the industry told me we could never compete with.

At the beginning of this decade there was a very large trade show which we were told we could never compete with. Both of the referenced shows are now gone as is COMDEX, Supercomm, CEBIT America and many dozens of others.

If you are on top today - consider yourself lucky - it is not a right or a gift. A new technology will wipe you out overnight if you are not aware of the changing business landscape.

Speed

14 years ago I was approached by someone who worked for a competitor and he told me something stunning. "We know there is no way TMC can compete with us because they are too slow." Sh&%$T, he was right I thought. I didn't sleep that night - I came up with ways of transforming our company so we can become not only faster but fastest. Within the next few years, we performed a slew of market-changing announcements and strategies that I found out later left our competition in the dust.

At one point in our past we were alerted to the fact that a competitor was going to launch a new product which we too were about to launch. We further knew we had a few weeks to saturate the universe with our product and message because the decision-maker for the opposing company decided to take two-weeks off.

When this person got back from vacation, they decided they were too late and cancelled their product launch shortly thereafter.

Fail

If you aren't failing regularly you are doing something very wrong. Launch, launch, launch and learn from your mistakes and be quick to change strategy. Streamline the launch process so it costs as little as possible. Use brand extensions to test new techniques and business models... Yes, use your core and successful businesses to test new ideas and concepts.

The world is filled with opportunity - how do you know you are doing your part to take advantage of them all? The only way to know for sure is a track record of not only success but failures that in some cases became successes as well.

Be Passionate

If you don't have passion for what you do, why do it? Life is too short. Technology has changed the way our business works - before the Internet, a great artistic design or article would be read by a predefined amount of people. With the advent of the web, the best content is spread virally and as such you can get instant feedback on your work via search engine rankings, referred traffic, comments and more. In other words, the Net allows us to entertain the most innate passion in all of us - the need for recognition and positive reinforcement. If you don't agree then you explain the success of blogs, Twitter and Facebook.

Work Harder

The world is getting more competitive and with few exceptions, every industry is a target for intense competition. In just over a decade technology has helped wipe out photo processing stores, florists, retail stores, catalogers and more.

Profit margins are being and will continue to be squeezed thanks to the Internet.

Every year I find myself working harder and the companies who don't keep up are generally liquidated and the employees are left scrambling looking for new jobs with little notice.

Obviously hard work alone won't cut it - you can row as hard as you like but if your rudder is not pointing in the right direction, you are destined to crash and burn. Be sure your company is doing all of the above and if needed, be the change agent to make these ideas a reality. If you do, you will likely be rewarded. If not, perhaps you are on the wrong boat - I mean team.

I asked our founder Nadji, why he started this company and he went over the last 35+ years in a few minutes. Perhaps the quote which moved me most was the following, "We wanted to be first and better than anybody else."

Quite often, passion and enthusiasm disseminated from the top is the equivalent of hitting a tuning fork hard on a desk. Just as the vibrations feel as if they are more powerful as they descend down the fork, passion and enthusiasm spread throughout an organization can be even more powerful than the initial jolt of energy a company's founder injects into a team.

A passion for serving our customers well - being accessible, listening to constructive criticism and treating each other with courtesy and respect are a few of the reasons I believe we have made it through countless wars, bubbles and other business challenges.

Then there is that last concept which I believe almost all companies need to more effectively communicate - gratitude. And on that note, thanks to the TMC readers, sponsors, advertisers, partners, conference attendees, vendors and team members who have helped us achieve this milestone.

I have heard a number of positive comments regarding the addition of an optical event at ITEXPO this fall. Thanks for all your comments. As I mentioned recently, Lightwave ONE which stands for "Optical Networks for Enterprises" will be collocated with ITEXPO Oct 4-6 2010 in Los Angeles, CA.

As you likely know, we at TMC do our best to ensure we provide the most complete educational experience we can under one roof. There is no other suite of simultaneous shows we know of on the planet with the unique mix of exhibitors and overlapping industries you will see this fall at the show.

You can come to Los Angeles the week of ITEXPO and learn everything you need to about the optical market while also taking in the latest on switching gear, communications, 4G the smart grid, M2M and much more. See the list at the bottom of this post for specifics please.

One of the reasons for this post is I wanted to alert you that the Lightwave ONE conference Web site is now up. Here are some important links and additional facts about the event from the site:

Dates and Times

Speaker List (coming soon)

Sponsorship Opportunities

Optical Exhibit Pass

Lightwave's ONE Conference is a must-attend event for:

Small, Medium and Large Commercial Enterprises: IT/Network Directors and Managers, Data Center and SAN Managers, Communications Directors and Managers, CIOs and Corporate Executives involved in Strategic Planning

Service Providers: IT/Network Directors, Operations Directors, Strategic Planning, Customer Care, Business Development, Regulatory Affairs

Local, State and National Government - IT/Network Directors and Managers, Data Center and SAN Managers, Communications Directors and Managers, Policymakers

Financial, Healthcare, Education and other Specialized Communities: IT/Network Directors and Managers, Data Center and SAN Managers, Communications Directors and Manager

Lightwave's Optical Networks for Enterprises (ONE) Conference is unlike any other communications, networking or optical conference.

LIGHTWAVE's ONE Conference is the only event exclusively focused on real-world optical communications strategies for network owners, managers and service providers. The ONE Conference and Optical Networking Pavilion, collocated with ITEXPO, provide a unique educational and networking opportunity for enterprise and service provider managers who are evaluating, implementing and managing fiber-optic networks.

At Lightwave's ONE Conference, leading strategists, analysts and deployment specialists will reveal how you can use optical communications technology now to cost-effectively meet and prepare for rapidly expanding enterprise bandwidth and service needs. Whether you manage the communication network within an enterprise organization or want to provide the fiber-optic services that power it, this unique conference will help you make the right optical networking technology, architecture and product decisions.

Enterprise, government and service provider organizations are looking for practical solutions to rapidly expanding bandwidth and network cost challenges, and Lightwave's ONE Conference focuses specifically on their needs. With a 25-year track record of excellence in explaining the technologies, strategies and product options for building, maintaining and upgrading optical networks, Lightwave is uniquely positioned to bring together the thought leaders who can provide the practical advice you need to make the right optical networking decisions.

Here are some of the important links you need to keep up with many of the events taking place that week in LA:

ITEXPO

4GWE

SMARTGRID Conference

MSP World

M2M Conference

Smart Products Ecosystem Conference (SPEC)

SIP Tutorial

CVx ChannelVision Expo

Cloud Communications Summit

VIPeering Conference

I can't wait to personally welcome you at the show!!!
