Is Apple the Biggest Facebook Threat?

Now I am not saying Apple is today ready to take on Facebook but boy are getting to a point where the pieces are lining up nicely for the maker of super-cool gadgets to combine the best of its offerings into a seamless social network.

Rather than talk about all the pieces, let’s instead begin the discussion realizing the massive marketshare Apple has and is gaining in consumer electronics. Add to this the increase in Mac shipments the company continues to boast. It is this network of devices which enabled the company to launch a product like FaceTime for video conferencing by immediately interconnecting millions of devices worldwide.

Facebook Worth $50B, Where is your Social CRM Strategy?

Look, I don’t know if Facebook is worth $50 billion but I can tell you with its massive momentum acceleration in users and page views, advertising revenue will continue to grow at a geometric rate. The company has about two billion dollars in sales right now and is barely scratching the surface in terms of the additional paid services it could potentially offer. An app store for example could bring in massive revenue and as local advertising is integrated into the mix, the value of the page views will increase dramatically.

It is easy to see the company will be reinvesting in its platform making Facebook even more sticky and as it does so, social media becomes that much more important to all companies because simply stated, this is were your customers live.

MySpace May Layoff 550, Relies on Facebook for Traffic

Obviously most every site relies on Facebook for traffic but in the case of MySpace a whopping 18% of the traffic comes from Facebook – the top upstream site in-fact according to Alexa. The next highest referral sites are Google at 14% and Yahoo! at 5.5% making Facebook a crucial resource for MySpace in terms of traffic. What may be worse for MySpace is that once people are done visiting a MySpace page, Facebook is the #1 site they visit – 18.66% of the time in fact.

Facebook just overtook Yahoo by a comfortable amount to become the third largest website in the world according to comScore. The world’s leading social networking site attracted 648 million unique visitors in November 2010 and this compares to just 630 million for Yahoo.

It is obvious the growth of social networking is not slowing down any time soon and as more and more commerce is being initiated based upon social network chatter; the need for companies to monitor and participate in these online conversations grows by the day. Yet with all the growth in the market, social CRM is something most companies aren’t focusing on in a concerted way.

Appliances Should Become Easy to Use Before Smart

Devices are getting smarter - the smart home of the future will consist of gadgets which speak with one another, the electric company, the cloud and all your computers - from desktops to the ones you keep in your pocket. They will tweet, post status messages on Facebook and more than likely teach you about calculus if you sit still long enough.

The only challenge of course is devices are getting more complicated - with interfaces most likely created by the same people who designed cell phones in the pre-iPhone days.

A reminder of the situation comes courtesy of Alexia Tsotsis at TechCrunch who talks about a trip to her relatives house and how the experience left her longing for all devices to be made by Apple.

If household appliance makers haven't gotten the message about the importance of simple and easy to use GUI by now, they should get ready to watch new entrants steamroll them in the future.









Callvine Simplifies Mobile Conferencing

Yesterday I was at a party where one of the guests was telling me about her job managing real estate for her family. I inquired about where her office is and she held up her cell phone and said my car is my office. This conversation reminded me about a recent conversation with Callvine Founder and COO Mark Dzwonczyk who tells me his company has found the secret ingredient to take conferencing to the mobile professional. After a couple of years of work, the company has an app which I tried on an iPhone (iTunes preview) allowing you to quickly set up groups which you can use to SMS and conference.

Ready, Aim, Send: Military Embraces Smartphones

It is not as if the US government has slowed spending to keep up with the general economy so it comes as a surprise to me that we haven't been issuing a couple of smartphones apiece to soldiers in the field. Thankfully, the military is getting into the swing of things by ensuring virtually everyone will have 24x7 access to mobile information, videos from unmanned vehicles and tactical information of various sorts.

My only concern? I hope these things are really locked down well so as to make leaks more difficult to pull off. The last thing we need is thousands of soldiers tweeting sensitive information on the battlefield.

Just to be sure, I hope the top brass in the armed services is monitoring the hashtag #topsecret.

I’ve followed the IP communications business for well over a decade and in 1997 my company TMC decided to launch a publication called Internet Telephony to focus on what we believed would be a massive trend towards IP communications. At first we were ridiculed because there was a point in time when the technology was seen as a replacement for Ham radio only. It took some years but the industry caught fire and saw incredible innovation – even a bubble or two grew and exploded on the way to where we are today.

And as amazing as the market has been for 12 years or so, we didn’t see VoIP-on-a-stick become ultra-popular until a few years ago.
