There are a plethora of apps to communicate but precious few bubble up to the top. Quite often a company comes up with an idea for a service which improves on another form of communications. Tweetdeck and Hootsuite come to mind as examples.

Another new option is Moped 2.0 which goes live as you read this entry and allows users to more easily communicate with their social circles while adding in the capability of sharing media. I like to think of it as social SharePoint.

The company bills itself as open-web messaging and connects with contacts from Twitter, Facebook, Google and Linked In while enabling cloud storage via Dropbox. When you send media to your contacts it is also searchable later through a web-based and mobile application.

The company also has integration with IFTTT – a programmatic service which allows users to have the system automatically take actions based on specific sets of circumstances. An example is automatically saving all photos from an Instagram account to a Dropbox account.

Although the system does not act as an email client it can send you a message when you get a message sent to you via this manner when you are not logged in.

Moped is an intriguing addition to the collaborative process – allowing far richer and more powerful group discussions, work and play sessions. In some ways it overlaps social networking sites from Google and Facebook and in other ways it adds a great deal of value. There are certainly many workgroup applications for this innovative new service and we look forwards to seeing how the market accepts Moped 2.0. Perhaps it will one day be mentioned with the other services mentioned at the start of this post.

Update June 6, 2013 3:36 pm EST:

Moped founder Schuyler Deerman who you may remember as the whiz-kid from Digium and I have a discussion using Moped

I’d like to start by saying my heart goes out to the victims of the horrific Boston Marathon and their families. Having said that I read with interest that The New York Times, Boston Globe and Wall Street Journal took down their paywalls during this crisis and moreover many reporters were reporting on Twitter without linking to any content on their sites.

The challenge paid and many other media outlets face is obvious… They need to master social media while also getting readers to pay for their news and/or visit their websites for more information.

Of course there is the ability to give away a great deal of free content on Twitter and other social sites in order to get many followers who can be then directed to special subscription offers.

Perhaps the ideal scenario is a social model which shares revenue with publishers. For example, YouTube allows content creators to share in the proceeds of the ad sales from the content they create. Twitter and Facebook will probably want to consider a similar strategy.

Then again, these two social sites are so popular they may not need to change a single thing in order to keep the growth of their sites going. This of course means media companies will have to adhere to guidelines to ensure they don’t tweet away news which someone would consider paying for. Ron Matejko at Publishing Executive has more and is especially irritated at media sites which drop paywalls when these sites have news which readers need most.

Has the SEC just signed the death warrant for the press release market? Possibly. Standard operating procedure today is to distribute press releases through established services like Business Wire and PR Newswire but thanks to the SEC, you can post your news on social sites – as long as users are told where to look.

Reed Hastings accelerated this move by posting materially important information about his company to his Facebook page. This set off a fire storm regarding whether this action was proper or not based on current investment rules. It seems the SEC does think the behavior was OK as he is not being prosecuted.

This gets us to the news made today by Business Wire in the form of, you guessed it – a press release, where they explain social can be one form of full and fair disclosure and offers but “Business Wire believes that a broadly disseminated news release -- distributed simultaneously and in real-time via a legitimate news wire service -- is still the most effective way to maximize investor outreach, and to inclusively serve the needs of all market participants.”

The release goes on to explain how it is a more suitable platform than social because it protects its clients security and also ensures there is an audit trail in the case of a regulatory investigation.

Here is the reality… Companies can easily host their news on their own sites and tweet it, use Google+ or whichever services they desire. Yes, press release distribution is important but it is less so as search engines have lessened their importance in results.

I do see this move by the SEC as a major blow to Business Wire and the whole industry – that is exactly why they put out the release… To counteract the damage.

The winner here is all the social platforms you know and love and Bloomberg for its part has announced tweets will now be integrated into its terminals.

“When important news is shared on Twitter, traders and investors need to be able to access it, and validate its importance in order to incorporate that information into their decision making process,” said Jean-Paul Zammitt, head of sales and product development for the Bloomberg Professional service. “Bloomberg’s platform now provides this ability, along with the high-quality news, data and analytics our users need and have come to expect from us.”

Ten years ago the people of France had to deal with a major challenge – English tech words were beginning to become more popular than baguettes. As a result, the country’s Culture Ministry banned the term e-mail and replaced it with the term Courriel. A decade later, the country decreed the word hashtag shouldn’t be used but instead they suggested 'mot-dièse' which we believe may be French for “too much time on our hands due to overly generous government handouts.”

The country’s battle against tech terms coming from the US is dwarfed only by the country’s attack on US tech corporations. Most recently, Apple was fined 10,000 euros for having its workers work past 9:00 p.m. in retail stores. The French ban working between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless it is required. Now the country is after Skype – France isn’t happy the free service hasn’t registered as a telecoms operator.

Last week I pointed out the irony in the delayed EU fine of Microsoft after it didn’t give users an option to install competitive browsers. The point is by the time the company got fined, it had lost a good deal of marketshare because the internet itself allowed the competition to bypass the installed browser default which Microsoft provided in its OS.

Facebook too has had to deal with EU regulators on privacy issues – in 2011 the EU started to look at how the service tagged photos using facial recognition and over a year later the social networking giant removed all the facial recognition data from the EU.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of French and EU conflicts with tech companies – many know Google has had a number of back-and-forth legal challenges relating to advertising and newspapers.

It’s worth pointing out in many of these cases I am sure the companies in question were on the wrong side of the law and did need to be slapped on the wrist in court, through fines, etc to bring them in line.

It is however worth considering the German and French governments came together in 2008 to build a competitor to Google called Quaero. The plan was scrapped after the Germans pulled out but the project was slated to be massive – up to $2.6B was to be spent on it over five years.

This isn’t to say the US government hasn’t at times made life difficult for tech companies. The FTC for example just decided that social media like Facebook and Twitter need to have the same consumer protection disclaimers as other forms of advertising. While this makes sense from a fairness perspective, how you put a disclaimer and a message in 140 characters has yet to be determined.

You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to see a pattern emerging here. First the French go after the terms, then the business models and finally the companies themselves.

Then there are the the OTT VoIP and video vendors such as Skype. The telephone number has gone from being a protected client relationship to an afterthought. Even the bright spot related to phone numbers - massive texting revenue has recently been eroded by OTT apps like WhatsApp and even iOS messaging which seamlessly takes text messages off the operator network.

Enter IPgallery, a company playing in the IP communications carrier space for over a decade who wants to help service providers become the focal point of this brave new world of social and apps. Their suggestion is to provide customers with a social communications and hosted-PBX solution which integrates so seamlessly with popular web-based servies that users will rarely need to leave the comfort of the environment. An HTML5 interface allows a cloud-based service to tap into APIs of a slew of other companies to provide social, mapping and just about anything else a user can think of.

Just like a person might use HootSuite as a central hub to interface with numerous social networks, IPgallery helps carriers provide customized user interfaces which they believe are captivating enough to keep consumers living inside them.

Consumers for their part have shown a willingness to spend huge amounts off time interfacing with specific services such as Facebook. In fact, companies are tripping over themselves to have users interact with them on the world's most-popular social network. Carriers have a shot to get control back by providing customers with a user interface worth "living in."

In addition, they can add services such as shopping and entertainment and even combine location information to provide compelling applications which rival those of the OTT world. As carrier information is even richer than what is available to typical smart phone applications, they can actually provide better services than consumers can get elsewhere.

At Mobile World Congress in 2013 the Israeli company showed me an app they wrote which accesses Facebook and Maps and provides the photos of friends on their actual locations on a map. A user can select one or more friends and start a group communication, complete with file sharing and collaboration.

There is a great deal more - such as integrated e-learning, a hosted PBX with separate skins and functionality broken out by department such as accounting or sales. Finally, operators can add functionality by providing cloud-storage which could be used to hold content which is shared between users on the system.

IPgallery functions as part software/integration vendor and part systems-integrator, working with carriers the world-over to develop solutions which they need in their particular markets. This allows carriers to focus on their core competency while taking advantage of best-practices being developed by other service providers.

We often hear of discussion revolving around whether carriers are ok just being "dumb pipe" providers and regardless of the answer, there is definite value in owning the home page of the customer's world. Amazon has used this prime real estate to successfully push Kindle devices and Google uses it to push its Chrome OS, tablets and other devices.

Perhaps the better question is - what are the benefits from being the gateway to your customer's online activities including social, commerce and shopping? The answer of course is increased revenue and flexibility. And as service providers grapple with stagnant to lower ARPU and increasing network costs as they upgrade to 4G and beyond, exploring new revenue opportunities which could also reduce churn seems to make a lot of sense.

Some time back Verizon Wireless sent me a MiFi device to test and I have used it as a long-term review unit and am blown away at how useful it has become. Recently at ITEXPO in Miami I was able to use it instead of hotel WiFi which often can cost $15/day. Moreover, there was one hotel I stayed at this past month where the position of the hotel meant 4G didn't work from any provider - and it turns out I paid through the nose for hotel WiFi. I happened to use three devices and I got charged for each one (almost daily) for seven days. I didn't notice that there was a per-device charge as typically this isn't the case at the hotels I use.

Although I didn't get charged $315, that is what I would have paid had I used each device each day and the hotel didn't take some of the charges off my bill. The point is, your workers could save a bundle over the hotel WiFi charge with a single MiFi device.

Moreover, at the Gym at ITEXPO in Miami there was poor connectivity and no WiFi. What I ended up doing was placing the MiFi device on top of the hand sanitizer dispenser which was about six feet high or so. Up there it was able to receive a 4G signal.

This allowed me to have great connectivity through my workouts - I could tweet, stream music and keep in touch with my team the entire time I was down there.

In fact whenever I am in a location where connectivity is poor I look for a high place to put the MiFi device to maximize broadband supplied to my devices.

I also have to give a hats off to Boingo Wireless - thanks to them I was able to stay connected in the convention center, at airports and on my flight home from the show. Even better - their new iOS app makes it far easier to find networks which work with the service. It's worth pointing out that devices using WiFi use far less battery power than on a 3G or 4G network meaning when you are a conference you want to use WiFi as much as possible to conserve the battery on your devices.

Peter Bernstein has a great analysis piece on how the Unilever/Slim-Fast empire is struggling in-part because the company was too slow to come out with an app as well as the fact that other competitors have expanded their offerings to match the company or even take the lead. Personal experience has shown that the majority of my friends and acquaintances are now using apps to track their fitness – running and/or eating via calorie counting.

It’s amazing to me that even a company which profits handsomely from items sold in grocery stores can lose share because it didn’t provide apps on smartphones. This is in contrast to Starbucks who I tweeted about earlier this week – they really think mobile and social are crucial to their future.

Peter makes some good points in the piece and in a water-cooler conversation he said that the health app explosion may just be a fad. He goes on to say the problem with having so many apps is not having enough time to use them all.

This being a media company after all, I decided to take the conversation public and answer him on my blog. Hey, I don’t get paid to talk all day in a kitchen.

The bottom line is fitness apps are yet another tool in war on being and staying healthy. Consider them a productivity booster for the motivated. I just had lunch with a high school friend today who told me he just downloaded and uses a fitness app and moreover that he is an impatient person when it comes to weight loss.

I too am impatient. The problem with being impatient is if you don’t see results quickly you are more likely to give up. So fitness apps help keep you focused, motivated and maximize your results by letting you know how many calories you should burn and ingest in order to achieve your goals on a desired schedule.

BTW I don’t use a calorie counting app but I have found an app called WalkJogRun (iOS) to be a great way to track my running speed.

On Peter’s second point, I discovered through TMCnet an app called EasilyDo which looks at my schedule and alerts me to when I have to leave my office to get to my appointments on time. It uses GPS and worked great for about a week and then stopped alerting me about my meetings for some reason. then I turned off location services which temporarily stopped it from working correctly.

Putting that aside it also monitors Facebook for me and alerts me to birthdays and other events where I could congratulate my friends. It even fills out a field for me with “Happy Birthday Peter” allowing me to edit as needed. All I have to do is press send on each event and the post is taken care of for me.

The point is there are apps which make our lives easier – and even apps which work with other apps/cloud services to make our lives even more productive. We are increasingly becoming a mobile computing-dominated society and like it or not technology is here to stay and will soon become wearable meaning your gadgets and you will be even more tightly connected to you.

As this happens we can expect apps which manage apps and services to become more important than the underlying apps they are managing. Its truly an app eat app world.

But thanks to innovation from the people at Plantronics, the cloud can now reach through the browser and be closer to the user than ever before. In fact, the company has an SDK, which for the first time bridges the worlds of mobile and enterprise communications as well as computing. While CTI or computer-telephony integration is not a new concept, Plantronics uses its Spokes software as communications middleware to seamlessly connect mobile telephony with cloud-based or on-premise enterprise software.

Moreover, the headset can now provide contextual information to applications such as the mobile call state, mobile Caller ID, proximity, presence and wearing state. One of the more compelling new apps that uses this interface is Popcorn from ThreeWill; it integrates with a PC/laptop, Chatter, Salesforce.com and mobile devices while monitoring incoming phone calls. When one comes in, it pops a screen based on caller information in corporate databases. The problem being solved is mobile workers have work calls coming to their cell phones which don’t necessarily provide complete details regarding the caller.

How this differs from a traditional screen pop, in this case, is the call is coming over the mobile network so the enterprise PBX is out of the loop. Instead, the caller ID information is transmitted over Bluetooth to the Spokes software by Plantronics, which gives other applications access and these apps can in-turn query corporate databases in the cloud and in the data center.

Moreover, Popcorn allows the user to quickly type in notes, which are automatically placed in the appropriate customer record saving time and effort.

Another company using the Plantronics APIs is Datahug, they have solution that looks at a person you are in contact with at a company and ascertains via social networks and emails which other people in the company has contacts in your organization. Until now, Datahug could not sift through telephony data but it now can, thanks to the middleware-nature of the new Spokes APIs.

A new service called Fakefollowers allows Twitter users to see how many of their followers are of high quality or “real.”

Consider this service to be lumped in with other social tools like Klout which is used to measure social influence. I can already see the fights starting. “Hey, I have more Twitter followers than you.” “Oh yeah? Well 20% of yours are fake. Mine are almost all legit!”

What is considered fake? Well according to the company this is the current criteria and since the service is in Beta, we can expect them to change:

The Following / Followers ratio is less than 50 Following / 1 Follower

They repeat spam phrases like “diet,” “make money,” and “work from home”

Tweets are repeated more than three times

More than 90% of the account´s tweets are retweets

More than 90% of tweets are links and the profile has a following: followers ratio of 7 : 1 or more. This means, for example, that the profile is following 7 others while only being followed by 1.

The account has never tweeted

I checked some popular sites like TechCrunch which has almost 2.5 million followers and 18% of them are fake. Huffington Post has almost 2.4 million followers and 15% are fake. Robert Scoble at over 300,000 followers has a low fake percentage of 8%. Tom Keating and I have under 10,000 followers each but our fake scores are also very low at 4% and 1% respectively.

What does all this mean? According to the company, if your percentage falls within these ranges:

0–10% Your Followers are legitimate and alright.

10-20% You may have some fake or inactive Followers, but you probably have nothing to worry about.

20-50% Be cautious. If you have a large number of Followers, it is expected that some will be inactive or fake.

50-70% Now this is a red flag! Check your Followers and look at who they are.

70-100% Your account is practically made out of fake Followers. Take action immediately!

There is no word on what action to take if you fall into the latter categories but starting over may be the way to go.

We have seen the multi-billion dollar communications market get disrupted as the phone met the IP network. In the video below Phil Edholm describes how with WebRTC, the phone meets the web. As he describes, even though IP communications has been around for more than a decade, there hasn’t been a fundamental change in how we communicate. We still hang our phones off servers which allow communications to take place. Now, every web browser will become a multimedia communications engine, allowing browsers to communicate to other browsers directly. This is a totally new way of working – I like to refer to it as putting the power of an open-Skype into every browser.

Phil believes WebRTC will change communications the way the web changed the way information is shared. In other words – you can communicate very easily with others – without the need for continuous and central command and control.

As you may know, Edholm was Vice President of Technology Strategy and Innovation for Avaya GCS and previously the CTO/CSO for Nortel Enterprise Solutions. He knows the industry well and has been a past keynoter at ITEXPO. TMC has partnered with him and Crossfire Media to launch a new conference called WebRTC EXPO in order to educate the world on the power of this new technology.

Here is a partial list of people who should attend the event and why, according to Phil. The last one is my addition:

Enterprise IT: How will WebRTC integrate or even potentially replace your unified communications systems? Will you need to integrate WebRTC into your contact center to more fluidly communicate with current and potential customers?

Carriers: The implications of every browser allowing for rich communications to impact your business model can’t be overstated. In short, the pace of communications disruption continues. The simple question is, “Will you be driving or under the steamroller?”

Website owners: Does the addition of communications to the browser change your business model? How do you benefit from WebRTC? Can you use it to add value or generate more revenue for example?

Developers: This is a ground floor opportunity to change the world by writing new and innovative applications which weren’t possible before.

Investors: The entire phone network has just come under increasing pressure as a result of WebRTC. Moreover, Facebook, Twitter, Zynga and other companies with large reach have the ability to become their own phone network overnight.

WebRTC Expo takes place in South San Francisco, Nov 27-29, 2012 with keynotes from Plantronics and Thrupoint. We hope to see you there.

How too many investors can lead us to irrational exuberance 2.0

Fred Wilson, managing partner at Union Square Ventures is one of the most well-respected VCs around and does an amazing job with his AVC blog – it is in many ways a blueprint to starting a company. He has had so many good posts over the years it is tough to count.

In a recent interview with Technology Review he made some alarming comments which you should be aware of. He says VC firms are having a tough time raising money because returns have been mediocre. Amazingly, he describes “mediocre” as anything less than three times your money in a ten-year period which seems like an incredible return to anyone who hasn’t put all their investment dollars in Apple or Priceline.

He goes on to say venture capital is the best place to get money where a company has high risk but a large upside. He continues by saying that many IT companies can get going nowadays with money from Angel investors without the need for VC investments. This is exactly what David Rose alluded to when he keynoted the DevCon5 HTML5 conference last year in New York. The reality is the cloud is making it really easy to launch new companies.

Moreover, it is worth pointing out that ecosystems built by Apple, Google and Facebook make it infinitely easier to launch successful products as you can piggyback and augment products and services and instantly have access to hundreds of millions of potential users and customers.

Consider also that the freemium concept has allowed companies to instantly become juggernauts in their spaces. Skype is a great example of a multibillion dollar valuation put on a freemium service. LinkedIn at over $11B in market cap is another.

He continues to say one of the problems the industry faces is that there are a lot of people chasing a few big-name firms and moreover most of the money is tied up by “six white guys” who control two-and-a-half billion dollars. He feels this money would be better allocated to 25 firms where each has $100 million.

My thought process on the matter is the advent of cloud and ecosystems allows so much more innovation that the VCs are being disrupted by the angels. It is unclear if the market would be better served with more wealthy investors because it requires a tremendous amount of restraint to be a good investor in a heated market.

How many people went out and purchased homes which were larger or newer than they really could afford because everyone else was? How many of the smartest people on Wall Street bet their futures on complex derivatives that even Warren Buffet said he didn’t understand – because, everyone else was doing it? How many people invested in numerous CLECs, fiber and Internet companies in the nineties because everyone else was doing it?

From what I am seeing in the market the competent people are getting money and the ones who have less competence are struggling. I don’t mean this to be declarative – there are always exceptions but in general, there seems to be a balance of good ideas and people getting dollars to start and grow their companies.

So I do have to disagree with Fred a bit on this last point – if only because I don’t trust a plethora of VC firms to not lead us to irrational exuberance 2.0.

Recently I touched upon some of the differences between the automobile and tech spaces and in the past I have mentioned how Apple’s ability to price its products without discounting implies a stronger brand and moreover helps it sell in its retail stores which offer the same prices as online.

This doesn’t mean that Apple can sit still because we can expect an almost infinite supply of focused competitors.

Sure, many of them like RIM and Nokia are in decline and are retooling their product lines almost perpetually to become competitive. But beyond these examples we also have a slew of Japanese consumer electronics companies who have seen the golden age of TV come and go… Now they are focusing on exporting mobile devices to make a living. Players like Sony, Panasonic, Sharp and Fujitsu are but a few. Daisuke Wakabayashi has some good analysis on the situation and how Japanese mobile device makers got cocky thinking they already had smartphones and didn’t heed the shift in the industry to touchscreens fast enough.

The inevitable result of large gadget companies getting desperate to sell products in the growing market will mean a slew of new devices at lower and lower price points. Since cost will be a major issue, we can expect open-source Android phones galore.

The result may be a market where only Apple can make money. This however may not be in the best interest of Apple as companies fighting for share may lower the prices so much that a comparative iPhone will become much more expensive than its non-Apple counterpart.

The measurement of “much more” depends on the user of course and Apple is still in a superior position because it owns processor development and the entire ecosystem of apps and entertainment which means more ancillary revenue per device than the competition.

This doesn’t mean however that we aren’t about to see a flood of new Android devices very soon. And then there is Amazon who is likely to come out with a phone which will also be subsidized by the company’s Prime offering.

In a move towards differentiation expect more celebrity endorsements and branding of phones. To borrow from the car market again, you may have noticed both JLo and Charlie Sheen have been pitchmen for Fiat’s newest cars – although it is tough to imagine either actually driving one.

To attract the youth market I suggested One Direction as a natural partner for Samsung’s media players as you may recall.

Another trend we can expect to see from desperate mobile device companies is relationships with app and social companies. Expect for example Angry Birds phones, Twitter phones and so forth. The device makers will give these partners a cut of the sale and in-return they will tout their branded version of the various devices on the market.

Will these gimmicks work? To some degree yes but it is very tough to predict.

I would never have guessed that Beats by Dr. Dre would be as popular as they are considering Bose has been selling competing products which are quite good for many years. But still, these colored headphones are everywhere.

To continue comparison of cars and tech from earlier this week, there are a few examples of car brands determining they wanted to go upmarket only to get slammed back to reality. Mazda came out with its Millenia luxury sedan designed to compete with Infiniti and Lexus in the nineties. It was to be part of a new brand, Amati. But the money want there to launch a whole division so the car was launched as a Mazda. Although it had great reviews the public just didn’t warm to it because it was an expensive Mazda.

The Volkswagen Phaeton was another high-end car – designed to compete with Audi and Mercedes. In fact since VW owned Audi it shared many of the same parts but was just a more feature-rich automobile. Again, consumers didn’t want to spend north of $70 grand on a VW.

The point here is you aren’t likely to get a premium price for a phone from a typical Japanese manufacturer. Instead, there may be an opportunity to brand some of these new devices in the above-mentioned ways in order to either boost sales or get consumers to pony up more money per device than they typically would. This is why Sony will look to its entertainment and videogame arsenal for assistance.

In summary – the new Japanese competition is to be added to the already tough competition from Chinese manufacturers ZTE and Huawei and will lead to compressed industry margins. The opportunity does exist however for companies to copy what Beats By Dr. Dre Audio has done in consumer electronics. To date the company who has come somewhat close to doing this in Samsung but I believe there is room for another.

I couldn’t help but think about these suggestions when I happened upon a website We know what you are doing which categorizes public Facebook posts in ways which the posters will likely not be happy about.

For example, there is a category titled “Who wants to get fired” with posts which seem to all have the text “hate my boss” in them. There is also a category titled “Who’s hungover?” which basically is a search on the word “hungover.”

Then there is the “Who is taking drugs” column which seems to search on the term cannabis and some others.

There is more but the idea here is people not only don’t realize how to alter their Facebook privacy settings, they post things they really shouldn’t – when they do have the proper privacy settings on.

I look to the site as a reminder of just how open and free the world has become and moreover that we are in a new “Sharing Economy.”

Twitter just announced it has picked up blogging service Posterous and as a past user of the service I must say, did find it useful at the time I used it. Before I continue however I'd like to set up a point counterpoint where TMC blogger Peter Radizeski will present the negatives of this deal while I present the positives.

Here are Peter's thoughts:

So Twitter, the micro-blogging platform, acquired a macro-blogging platform, Posterous.

According to the Twitter blog, the key to the acquisition was the staff?

They wanted the talent. How often does the talent stick around after the culture shifts?

Sachin Agarwal, founder and CEO of Posterous, goes from being a CEO to a Product Manager. In some cases, that is okay of Agarwal gets to pursue a passion or a goal he was seeking. If there is an ego, though, that new title will be a killer.

Posterous is a blogging platform. I'm still stretching to see the revenue from this acquisition or the synergy. What does twitter need with a blogging platform?

Here are my thoughts:

Posterous is a great service as it allows users to utilize email to share their thoughts.

Twitter seems to be slowly branching out gobbling up complimentary services and this move fits with this trend.

One big drawback to Posterous is when it is used, people complained to me they would have to click additional links to get to the content.

In other words Posterous was a useful service for me as it didn't force me to shorten my content to 140 characters and now Twitter could merge the services making the experience better for posters like me and users who consume the content.

It is no secret that Twitter needs to grow and becoming more like Facebook through this acquisition is the logical way to do this.

I suggested they purchase Myspace last year but perhaps the timing was bad - this move is incremental and allows Twitter to slowly take the plunge from microblogging to macroglogging and eventually social network
