You Can Now Use your Phone on the Plane

September 9, 2016

The latest Windows 10 update makes it easier than ever to bring your mobile lifestyle onto an airplane. If you go into Settings and then Network & Internet, under Mobile hotspot, you can turn the service on and set a network name and password. As I write this on a Microsoft Surface Book, I decided to try the feature out. I then connected an iPhone and within a minute the phone rang.

With Polycom, Siris Capital Builds Impressive UC Holdings

July 11, 2016

Many where caught off guard when they learned Siris Capital outbid Mitel for Polycom but there are some good reasons for Siris to have made this move. After the Mitel acquisition was announced, I detailed the good and bad about the deal.

Here were the two comments which I placed in the bad category:

Bad: Polycom most logically should have ended up merging with Plantronics IMO – the companies are geographically close to one another and the synergies between headsets and other endpoints seemed like a perfect fit. I’ve thought this for many years.

10 Takeaways from Successful Twilio IPO

June 22, 2016

APIs are where the action is

With a backdrop of the tech market receding and traditional legacy telecom companies complaining of depressed margins and valuations, Twilio hit a grand slam with an IPO which priced them at over $1 billionahead of expectations.

Twilio is essentially an API company which allows developer ecosystems to be built by adding value to other applications. If you’ve communicated with your Uber driver without sharing your actual contact information, you can thank Twilio.

Microsoft's LinkedIn Acquisition is API Integration on Steroids

Redmond just turned ecosystem lemons into lemonade

Microsoft has been uniquely positioned in the IT space for decades meaning it’s a massive target for the whole industry. In fact, the company is now in a similar position to Novell in the 1990s when it owned the corporate network server space. Redmond used its dominant position in supplying endpoint software to also sell server operating systems and wiped out Novell.

Uber Picks Dialpad to Fuel its Growth

June 14, 2016

We’ve been covering cloud here at TMC for two decades – back when we called  these companies in this space ASPs and over these twenty years or so, there has been one constant in how they've gone to market. The initial target is small companies known as SMBs and then later they work up to larger companies. Grasshopper is an extreme example… They call themselves the entrepreneur’s phone system and while most have tried to move to larger installs, they seem to be stuck in place. Not that there is anything wrong with the approach, it’s just unusual.

API of the Week: Use Flowroute to Access the Multibillion Dollar Telecom API Space

May 18, 2016

Flowroute is one of the companies in technology that “gets it” when it comes to APIs. Yes, I know APIs aren’t new… Us developers have been using them and function calls since programming progressed beyond punch cards. It’s for this reason, some underestimate how much is happening in this area of technology. They may not realize just how much opportunity there is in opening up your platform to the world of developers and becoming the hub at the center of a thriving mini-economy you help create and foster.

The company had also sent me this email and it is so powerful, it literally took my breath away.

API of the Week: Vidyo APIs Add Value All Around Us

May 17, 2016

If you want your company to have a tremendous valuation, make it an integral part of a platform which allows others to benefit financially from effectively selling your products and services. Tens of thousands of resellers promote Microsoft software, hundreds of thousands develop software for iOS, Salesforce has a great partner ecosystem of app builders and so on. There are a few ways of becoming the platform company… From the inside out or the outside in.

In other words, once iPhones got in the hands of millions of people, the apps added value to the platform and by default, Apple, who is on the inside.

IDT $19.99 Cloud UC Package Delivers Solid Channel Value

May 7, 2016

IDT Corporation has been a visionary in the VoIP space for almost two decades and I’ve always been impressed with the company’s technology and range of solutions in the SIP trunking and hosted PBX spaces. Recently, they have become very aggressive in the UC space, going after a channel and looking to be the disruptor in the market they helped create in the 1990s.

In an in-person interview, IDT/Net2Phone President Jonah Fink told me he thinks his company will keep people up at night. For example, IDT has had decades to build out its international infrastructure which includes POPs and nodes in five cities in Brazil as well as London, Hong Kong, Chile and Peru. They offer unlimited calling to Mexico and Canada as well as a core hosted PBX/SIP trunking plan which consists of South America, Western Europe and Central America.

RIP Art Rosenberg

April 17, 2016

I just learned of the passing of one of the finest telecom analysts around - Art Rosenberg. I've known him through many decades and health issues. I got the sense he would always be with us because he seemed to be such a fighter.

What was unique about Art was not that he was opinionated - all analysts are to some degree, it was that he took every opportunity to share his views with you and was always immensely convincing.

He didn't do the job because of the paycheck - he seemed to love what he did. Hi truly lived communications.

I like to think that many of the other analysts in telecom learned a lot from Art...

Sennheiser TeamConnect: An Innovative Mobile War-Room in a Briefcase

April 16, 2016

One of the most innovative products I’ve seen this year in the UC space is the Sennheiser TeamConnect, a high quality, wireless conferencing solution. Here is the situation: you want to set up a conference call in a room which isn’t wired for conferences. You open a briefcase, take out a few pucks and place them around the table and voila, everyone is immersed in high quality audio.
