Communications Developer Show Daily

May 11, 2007

Here is the first show daily from the Communications Developer Conference taking place next week. Many have told me they are thrilled TMC is sponsoring such an event as there needs to be a single place the communications industry can come to get development information and network with fellow developers.   The show daily has many of the links you will need to understand what is important and when it is taking place.   In addition there is an explanation of the various workshops taking place from the following companies:     I am looking forward to the industry coming together next week and working on developing for the next big communications opportunities.

Office Headsets

May 9, 2007

I have written a few times in the past about TMC’s channel program and the fact we have built over 100 business to businesses (b2b) communities in the communications and technology space.   The communities are news-based and are designed in conjunction with the sponsors of each site.   We have found over time these communities get bookmarked and do better and better.   Our most recent addition to the channel familynumber 110 in fact -- is Office Headsets which is sponsored by GN Netcom.   Even though the channel is new there is some news and articles of interest already:

Open-Source Telephony Goes Mainstream

May 8, 2007

In the last few years the communications industry has been taken by storm through the invention of an open-source communications platform named Asterisk invented by Digium ( founder Mark Spencer. An article written for the January 2004 issue of Internet Telephony magazine by yours truly was titled, “Open Source Telephony. . .

Cable Gets VoIP

May 8, 2007

Cable companies are feasting on VoIP success by the millions of customers. What an amazing job they are doing taking customers from phone companies. So far however, cable VoIP growth in the SMB space has been slow. Large phone companies for their part seem to be copying as opposed to innovating.

VoIP Stories May 7, 2007

May 7, 2007

Here are some interesting stories worth reading. Incidentally, I now have a Plantronics CS70N installed at my desk. It is about the same size and weight as the popular Plantronics Voyager 510 with the difference being slightly more weight and thickness as well as a long voice tube which reaches your mouth.   I have been able to walk a few hundred feet (with massive amounts of RF emitting equipment in-between) from my base station before sound quality degrades.   Enjoy:

RIM Does Unified Communications

May 7, 2007

Research in Motion has taken the full unified communications plunge via its Blackberry Mobile Voice System (MVS) solution. The goal of this product is to allow a Blackberry smartphone to become a seamless telephony extension.   Millions of users already rely on Blackberrys to provide them seamless e-mail and now the company is pushing hard into the world of voice. MVS provides enhancements to device software, the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) and Ascendent Voice Mobility Suite from Ascendent Systems which is a subsidiary of RIM.   I had a chance to catch up with Ascendent Systems Senior Marketing Manager Heather Howland a few weeks back in Boston to discuss this announcement. In addition we spoke today where she rounded out the details.

Vulcan Flipstart, Verizon and YouTube

May 7, 2007

This is a busy news week with announcements and commentary from virtually all areas of communications and technology. Starting small, Gary Krakow has a review of the Vulcan Flipstart which is a company founded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Gary seems to like the device and one feature in particular he draws attention to is the small computer’s ability to be rebooted with a single button. There is a bit of irony in that the Microsoft co-founder “innovated” by allowing a Microsoft computer to be rebooted more quickly.

Trixbox/Fonality at Communications Developer

April 30, 2007

I have just received word Kerry Garrison will be speaking at TMC’s Communications Developer Conference to take place next month in Santa Clara, CA. Kerry is the Sr. Product Manager at Trixbox and works intricately with the open-source development community. If you have any interest in open-source communications development you will not want to miss his presentation.   In addition, Kevin Fleming, the co-maintainer of Asterisk will be presenting a keynote at the event.   We believe our keynote program is well balanced with representation from the open-source community and other important players in the market who will give their perspectives from various vantage points.   Keynotes will be provided from these other companies (in chronological order):
  • AudioCodes
  • Avaya
  • Pactolus
  • Aculab
  • Skype
  • Nortel
  • Cisco
