Wireless Carriers Racing to the Bottom

It had to happen eventually - a price war is taking its toll on telecom equipment providers because their customers won't spend money in some cases unless they can see an ROI of a billion dollars fairly quickly. This comment is attributed to Verizon from a trusted source I can't reveal.

In my recent meeting with Sprint, they explained how they are racing to the bottom by giving away more for less with their Unlimited Freedom plans. Obviously, these are my words, not theirs.

In addition, the Sprint ads on TV are amazing - they say their network quality is within one percent of Verizon yet a lot cheaper. When put in those terms, its very tough for Verizon to keep charging a premium for their service.

T-Mobile is obviously part of the challenge as well - they've been giving away more for less and increasing their value over the years.

Ericsson just put our its numbers for the quarter and an unexpected 14% drop in sales cratered the stock by 20%.

The latest Windows 10 update makes it easier than ever to bring your mobile lifestyle onto an airplane. If you go into Settings and then Network & Internet, under Mobile hotspot, you can turn the service on and set a network name and password. As I write this on a Microsoft Surface Book, I decided to try the feature out. I then connected an iPhone and within a minute the phone rang.

It would not be an exaggeration to say this level of excitement about the future of telecom hasn’t been seen since 1998. Although it has great food, the city of Barcelona has a pretty poor economy.

SIP Forum and UNH Team on Seamless Enterprise Communications Deployment

The SIP Forum recently announced it’s continuing to do its part to ensure enterprise communications products fully interoperate with service provider networks. In fact, its new SIPconnect Certification Testing Program will be hosted by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNH-IOL) and is designed to help ensure adherence to the SIPconnect Technical Recommendation currently at Version 1.1.

In an interview with Marc Robins SIPNOC Program Chair and Robert Kinder of Cox Business who also serves as a director, they mentioned the SIPconnect 1.1 spec is about five years old and is currently included in many RFPs. The goal of this new initiative however, is to increase interoperability between IP-PBX providers and service providers.

The idea is to plug in the box to the carrier with less headaches, in less time, and see installation issues and challenges which could have lasted weeks, be reduced to mere hours.

Breaking Rumor: Verizon to buy XO

Spectrum is the new beach front property according to Peter Radizeski @radinfo and he has a very reliable source which tells him Verizon is in late-stage talks to purchase XO Communications.

More from Peter:

"XO is the largest owner of LMDS spectrum, currently [2007] worth $35.8 million, in the nation. NextLink, the wireless operation of XOHO, recently launched its broadband wireless services in Las Vegas and increased its wireless portfolio to 14 markets at the speed of covering 1 to 2 metro areas/month: Washington DC, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Nashville, Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Houston, LA, Seattle, Phoenix, Las Vegas - already more than its almost only competitor in LMDS fixed wireless services, FiberTower. The remaining large LMDS spectrum owner, Level 3, through its acquisition of Telecove." [seekingalpha] IDT also owned a chunk of this spectrum too.
We'll see if he is correct - I have a lot of trust in his scoops - he has been very accurate in the past. As a reminder, I told you about Verizon's Terremark spin off eight months before the Reuters exclusive.

"The robots aren’t coming, they are here," is all I could think of today as I mulled over my notes from a recent meeting with Gregory Pal, Vice President, Marketing, Strategy & Business Development at Nuance Communications. Coincidently I also happened upon an article yesterday about how robots are doing more of the writing of the stories you read from the Associated Press - saving them time and money and more importantly allowing them and others to share stories which are of interest to various groups but which couldn’t previously be covered profitably.

To me, it seems the technology used to write stories is similar, in some ways, to the natural language understanding, or NLU technology, Nuance has been working on for many years. In fact, the company handles over 14 billion customer engagements per year with 80% of its OnDemand customers taking advantage of NLU as well as 1.7 billion mobile and web conversations processed through virtual assistant solutions.
