Nuance Brings Artificial Intelligence to the Omnichannel World

"The robots aren’t coming, they are here," is all I could think of today as I mulled over my notes from a recent meeting with Gregory Pal, Vice President, Marketing, Strategy & Business Development at Nuance Communications. Coincidently I also happened upon an article yesterday about how robots are doing more of the writing of the stories you read from the Associated Press - saving them time and money and more importantly allowing them and others to share stories which are of interest to various groups but which couldn’t previously be covered profitably.

To me, it seems the technology used to write stories is similar, in some ways, to the natural language understanding, or NLU technology, Nuance has been working on for many years. In fact, the company handles over 14 billion customer engagements per year with 80% of its OnDemand customers taking advantage of NLU as well as 1.7 billion mobile and web conversations processed through virtual assistant solutions.

Comcast Business Seeing Nice Broadband Growth

While much of the talk about Comcast in the media recently has involved their M&A aspirations as well as their consumer brand, the real story at the company is Comcast Business. Recently I met with Mike Tighe, Executive Director of Data Services of the company who told me the business-focused area of the organization is growing at 21% a year and is taking share.

He went on to say the company has the best footprint in fiber optics – this is important as he sees customer bandwidth needs increasing 30% a year. Moreover, and this is interesting for those who are concerned about the sheer size of the company, they are an insurgent, not an incumbent in competing with DSL.

InfoVista and Ipanema Technologies Poised to Enable New Carrier Services

The WAN optimization market is expected to more than double in size from 2014 to 2019 eventually hitting $12.1 billion according to MarketsandMarkets. It’s no wonder - Cyril Doussau de Bazignan explained to me in a recent meeting that as more companies adopt SaaS, they have the challenge of ensuring critical applications have adequate performance at the expense of applications which are secondary in importance.

Cyril works at InfoVista, a leading provider of IP and RF planning, assurance and optimization software solutions and they recently acquired WAN optimization and application performance leader Ipanema Technologies. He went on to say CIOs have to deal with the challenges of a multitude of applications running on their network while at the same time, enterprises are looking to offload more traffic to the internet to save money.

Arbitrage is one of the great opportunities which presents itself repeatedly in tech. In the nineties, something called international callback allowed am international caller to dial a number in the US and hang up – only to have a US-based call at a lower per-minute rate initiated on their behalf. Many hundreds of millions of dollars were spent on this market for hardware, software and service thanks to the arbitrage opportunity to save money on calling minutes.

VoIP continued this trend with even greater arbitrage and carriers spent billions on equipment to save money carrying phone calls on networks.

Verizon to Spin off Cloud and What We Can Learn

I have a solid source "in the know" who tells me Verizon is looking to spin off its Terremark cloud business as well as its reseller arm which sells PBXs. The idea is the company wants to focus more on mobile and moreover, Verizon's Broadsoft-powered hosted solutions will be the only ones the company offers.

While mobile is a cash cow for the company, cloud is not going away. However, there is less ability to differentiate cloud services so perhaps this is the reason for the company to explore options. Eventually they may be thinking, Amazon will own the space. In terms of PBX resale of companies like Avaya, the idea is to get away from premise equipment and move to cloud.

QualiSystems Boosts Automation of NFV, DevOps and SDN

One of the more interesting vendors at Interop 2015 was Qualisystems as the company allows companies to automate many manual tasks in order to more efficiently develop, manage and deploy jobs in the cloud and on legacy computing environments. Alex Henthorn-Iwane, VP, Marketing explained his company designs solutions for non-programmer teams. Moreover, they help create an environment as a service – a set of cloud offerings for a private cloud. They take very complex infrastructure and make it more agile and continuous, like what they would run on Amazon AWS.

He went on to explain, quite often engineering has one cloud, testing has another and deployment could be in yet another cloud.

As telcos become software telcos, they are beginning to shed some of their bespoke, proprietary hardware in exchange for NFV software running on OTS computers from white box companies, Dell, HP, Cisco, etc. This move follows similar trends in many markets – thus we’ve seen opinion pieces about how software is eating the world.

It’s all about abstraction really. Software running on smartphones for example can replace fixed-function remote controls.

It’s been a few years since I've covered Aricent (2012, 2009, 2006) but as fate would have it I was fortunate enough to interview Frank Kern, CEO at MWC 2015. This is one of the companies behind many of the products we use and one you likely don’t know a great deal about. It’s owned by KKR and Sequoia and is a pure-play product innovation services company – Kern explained his they don't do IT and BPO like others in the space.

Another differentiator is the company’s core strength is connectivity and there is a great demand for such services at the moment.
