Are Pay-TV Companies Suicidal?

January 10, 2011

I don’t mean to sound an alarm bell but run for the doors – if you are a cable company or telco, just what the heck are you thinking?

Let me lay out the facts. Kodak is a shell of its former self as is Tower Records which went through bankruptcy. And in each case the move to digital distribution gave consumers alternatives which were either lower cost, more convenient or both.

Read Before Switching to Verizon for iPhone

January 10, 2011

Verizon is widely rumored to be releasing the iPhone tomorrow and so many have waited so long for the moment they can either give up an existing device on Verizon’s network or switch from AT&T or other carriers. There are a few things to ponder before switching – such as will the new iPhone support GSM, allowing users to travel outside the country and use their phones. My guess is yes – it will likely be a “world phone.”

Moreover, will the device be the same as what AT&T users get or be upgraded somehow with a new designation?

Behold the Anticloud - Lapdoc is Born

January 7, 2011

Are Lapdocs the Future or Palm Foleo 2.0?

In May of 2007 Palm introduced the Foleo to a stunned public wondering why the need a device whose only purpose is to sync with their smartphone. Priced similar to a laptop – and with a similar form factor, the Foleo had only a fraction of the functionality and needed a separate device to be truly useful. I immediately explained I had no idea what the need for the gadget was.

SIP and HTML5 Convergence: Are You Ready?

January 5, 2011

Carl Ford is the loveable guy in the IP communications space I used to compete with but we are now family. It is really a great partnership and his company, Crossfire Media has partnered with TMC on a number of events including SIP Tutorial which has been held three times and has educated companies of all sizes, major telcos and technical staffs working at prestigious Ivy League schools.

The next event will be collocated with ITEXPO East 2011 in Miami this February 2-4 and I asked Carl for a few reasons to attend and macro trends which will be discussed.

He mentioned recent SIP meetings in China which show the need to keep current on SIP standards and HTML5 in particular which will integrate with SIP in the future.

What The Peep (Wireless) is Going On?

January 4, 2011

A company which claims to do the impossible. What can’t this thing do?

I love to hear aggressive new companies break onto the scene full on huge ambitions but the recent news that Peep Wireless will be able to take a smartphone or telematics-based bluetooth system and use software to recreate the PSTN has me baffled just a bit. OK, baffled a lot.

MySpace May Layoff 550, Relies on Facebook for Traffic

December 31, 2010

Obviously most every site relies on Facebook for traffic but in the case of MySpace a whopping 18% of the traffic comes from Facebook – the top upstream site in-fact according to Alexa. The next highest referral sites are Google at 14% and Yahoo! at 5.5% making Facebook a crucial resource for MySpace in terms of traffic. What may be worse for MySpace is that once people are done visiting a MySpace page, Facebook is the #1 site they visit – 18.66% of the time in fact.

Skype, FCC, IBM and Tech News Before New Year's

December 30, 2010

While the week before Christmas and New Year’s is typically slow with regards to news, the huge blizzard which hit the northeast really started things off with a bang. A foot-and-a-half of snow hit the area around TMC headquarters in Norwalk, CT with drifts totaling a few feet in height. Airports were backed up and some streets took days to plow well.

News to Know Before New Year's 2011

December 29, 2010

The bitter fight between Oracle and SAP over copyright infringement got more bitter with courts agreeing SAP owes Oracle $16.5M in interest on the $1.3B award Oracle received. While less than the $211.7M Oracle sought, Oracle will also get reimbursed by SAP for $120M in attorney fees.

Let’s say you got a NookColor for Christmas but your books are all on Amazon’s Kindle service… You can now read Kindle books on the Nook – but you need to put on your propeller hat first.

Most Indian telcos must roll out services on wireless spectrum they purchase from the fovernment in a year or pay fines.

The Apple iOS vs. Android Fight in 2011

December 28, 2010

As TMCnet's Tom Keating mentions on his blog, there are many factors to consider in the fight for mobile supremecy between Apple, Google Android and yes, even Microsoft. Tom's point about Microsoft injecting itself into the Android relationship with carriers to become the defacto search engine has even begun to happen already.

But what caught my eye regarding the controversy is will Apple become the defacto high-end alternative that is priced out of the reach of most of the market?

The answer may lie in production numbers alone.

You see, the Apple hardware is virtually unchanged from iPod to iPhone to iPad so economies of scale work in the company's favor.

However, Android devices are gaining massive share. If these gadgets can also leverage the same hardware with other mobile operating systems then they too can take advantage of the same efficiencies. Perhaps Samsung and HTC are best positioned in this regard as an HTC device, for example, can do double-duty as an Android and Windows Phone 7.

A while back I asked Nokia execs about the disadvantage they had in supporting a plethora of form factors while Apple gets away with one and they didn't have a good answer.

But if a phone manufacturer can leverage multiple operating systems to drive scale they can then compete more effectively with Apple.

How TMC is Working to Make ITEXPO Even Better
