With Polycom, Siris Capital Builds Impressive UC Holdings

July 11, 2016

Many where caught off guard when they learned Siris Capital outbid Mitel for Polycom but there are some good reasons for Siris to have made this move. After the Mitel acquisition was announced, I detailed the good and bad about the deal.

Here were the two comments which I placed in the bad category:

Bad: Polycom most logically should have ended up merging with Plantronics IMO – the companies are geographically close to one another and the synergies between headsets and other endpoints seemed like a perfect fit. I’ve thought this for many years.

Elizabeth Warren says Apple, Amazon and Google are Acting like Monopolies

June 30, 2016

The Senator from Mass is now a Champion of Small Business

If you thought Elizabeth Warren was the most anti-business Senator you have ever seen, you are likely right. Her “You didn’t build that” rant which berated entrepreneurs for thinking they actually deserve to benefit from their success really cemented her image.

Lo and behold, she has evolved into going after Apple, Amazon and Google for blocking competition from other companies.

Web video is a booming area of the internet – for example, companies like Streamago and are seeing hypergrowth rates once they achieve viral critical mass. Another Example is LevinTV, a popular spinoff of the Mark Levin Radio program. Just as cloud has made it possible to inexpensively scale general-purpose tasks, some companies are looking to provide specialized services such as video, to allows content producers and aggregators to quickly launch a new business. One such organization is Kaltura.

API of the Week: Vidyo APIs Add Value All Around Us

May 17, 2016

If you want your company to have a tremendous valuation, make it an integral part of a platform which allows others to benefit financially from effectively selling your products and services. Tens of thousands of resellers promote Microsoft software, hundreds of thousands develop software for iOS, Salesforce has a great partner ecosystem of app builders and so on. There are a few ways of becoming the platform company… From the inside out or the outside in.

In other words, once iPhones got in the hands of millions of people, the apps added value to the platform and by default, Apple, who is on the inside.

Streamago: The Hottest Video Streaming App You Don't Know

May 9, 2016

Streaming has been all the rage for a few years now… Periscope, Meerkat and Facebook Live are just a few of the services that have made a splash recently. Blab.IM (see below) made some noise for a while – it differentiated by allowing multiple people to stream simultaneously – like the talking heads we see on the news. recently got a massive funding round of $100 million– its s service which allows you to make and stream music videos, staring yourself and friends.

Streamago is one of the newer companies on the scene – it’s growing amazingly fast and isn’t necessarily a new concept – but its executed very well.

Smart Technologies Adds Ludicrous Mode to Your Corporate Productivity

Ludicrous Speed from the Mel Brooks movie Space Balls

Speed is everything in business. It just is. It’s better to be quick than right because if you have a culture of speed you can adjust and get it right before the next guy or gal has a chance to even start copying you. Moreover, thanks to the internet, the ability to roll out new ideas as services where the cloud supports infinite scale means we are almost at the point where ideas and reality are directly connected.

Mitel Buys Polycom: The Good and Bad

April 15, 2016

This post has been updated on April 15, 2016 at 4:30 pm with feedback from Wes Durow, CMO of Mitel. Also, it turns out we broke the news on the potential of this merger even earlier than thought... December of 2015.

Last month my fellow TMCnet blogger Peter Radizeski broke the news that Mitel was buying Polycom – so if you’re a TMCnet reader, once again, you got in front of this news. Peter had more thoughts on the matter today as it became clear the acquisition was happening.

Hiring Millennials? Fortune Favors the Prepared

April 14, 2016

Six years ago I covered Cisco’s Quad, enterprise social network strategy that was a great idea but likely didn’t succeed because it was sold top-down the way Cisco is accustomed to selling things. It turns out social, needs to be bottom up to succeed. In fact just so many things these days seem to be this way. In many ways, Apple is to blame for this trend over the past decade but the web browser also became a bottom up install as workers forced companies into supporting web access.

SD-WAN, the Best Bang for Your IT buck

April 13, 2016

My most recent video interview (Fall, 2015) with Kevin Gavin of Talari Networks (seated to the right)

I just had a chance to interview Kevin Gavin from Talari Networks – I’ve known him for years, going back to his ShoreTel days and I also covered Talari around the time he joined and named it a company to watch. He is very knowledgeable about tech and telecom. In this recent video interview I had with Kevin, he touts added benefits of SD-WAN like making the network more holistic.

I saw him most recently a few weeks back where he told me that 2.5 years ago when he joined the company, the space really didn’t exist. Furthermore, they had to sell the category as well as the product.
