Alcatel-Lucent has a dire warning for wireless carriers and investors… You just aren’t going to make money from wireless broadband. The timing couldn’t be better <sarcasm> to get the news as global carriers are pouring billions into their 4G networks.

What leads the company to this conclusion? The challenge is operators are starting to tier their pricing which means users can get on broadband networks less expensively – moreover, voice revenue is paying much of the carrier bill and as it declines in lockstep with the cost of data plans – carriers could be losing money for years to come.

ListAndPlay: Music Videos Done Right

A while back I outlined my idea of dream TV and talked about how the merger of music selection algorithms and video clips could bring us television which is customized by content genres as opposed to today’s system of having to watch a channel at a time. Let’s say you are an avid Yankees fan – every clip mentioning the Yankees will eventually be queued up for you to watch. The stream could include clips from the Home Shopping Network, local news, ESPN, etc.

Thrane & Thrane Update

I recently had a chance to sit with Ron Lockerby of Thrane & Thrane to learn about what was new with the company’s satellite product line which serves a diverse set of markets such as maritime, aeronautical and land mobile. With a total of 600 people in the company and 60% of those being engineers you can expect engineering to be a strong-suit of the organization.

Thrane & Thrane’s maritime products consist of the SAILOR line which is OEMed by Northrop Grumman’s Sperry Marine unit and the product line consists of VHF, MF/HF, Inmarsat C terminals, complete GMDSS systems including LRIT and SSAS solutions, and a full range of maritime satcom products including Iridium, Mini-M, Fleet, FleetBroadBand, VSAT and satellite TV.

Lockerby spent some time focusing on the company’s Explorer 325 which is a compact voice and broadband solution for vehicles.

Harmonic Update

I recently had a chance to chat with Ian Jefferson, VP Sales & Biz Dev at Harmonic to learn more about his company which provides video solutions to a variety of spaces from telco to satellite. Recently the company purchased Omneon, a leader in providing broadcast and on-demand video solutions. Patrick Harshman, President and CEO of Harmonic explained that the acquisition was designed to help deepen company relationships with global media companies, enabling them to create, package and deliver next-gen video-centric media services.

Jefferson told me he sees more and more file-based video content and the files need to be transcoded to 20 or more different formats to deal with a slew of new devices and quality types.

Optibase Update

Recently I had a chance to sit down with Optibase VP of Sales, Mike Chorpash to talk about his company which focuses on advanced video solutions. There isn’t much new to report – you may recall TMC reported the company has been sold to VITEC Multimedia along with the Focus Enhancements’ Group. Chorpash enthusiastically discussed the company’s “superblade” – the MGES 6000 a converged encoding module providing 4 HD and SD H.264 channels per blade. Each system can handle 13 blades for a total of 52 streams or 104 at two different bit rates.

TV End Game has Google Written All Over It

After a whirlwind tour of SATCON and Content & Communications World which took place last week, 4G World and Interop which took place this week and over a hundred meetings, I find myself ruminating over numerous discussions about where things are headed – in terms of content, technology, entertainment and apps.

There are macro trends which are intersecting and diverging and as much as I would like to say I have 100% clarity about it all, I don’t – but I do believe I have enough observations to share in order to get investors and innovators thinking about what the future will look like.

Over the last 30 years the rise of cable and then satellite radio shows consumers will pay money for content and in many cases for the ability to reduce the amount of commercials they consume.

But this idea is under attack from yet another trend emerging over the last few years.
