Why your next smartphone may be free

Speculation abounds that Facebook is working on a phone and it seems more than logical to assume it will be based on Android and sold via carriers. In fact one would imagine AT&T is trying like crazy to get an exclusive deal with the company as they desperately need a new hot product when the iPhone potentially becomes available on other networks.

In fact, it would be surprising if carriers haven't been chasing Facebook down to get such a phone with mass appeal out of the gate.

What Cablevision Needs to do Next

While others complain about their cable providers, I am pretty happy with mine - Cablevision and Optimum/Optimum Online. The company provides blazing fast Internet at reasonable prices and recently has added services such as WiFi almost everywhere I go, Caller-ID on the TV, and Internet control of the DVR including a mobile site. More recently the company rolled out an iPhone app which is even better than the mobile site in terms of its design.

Do I feel like I am getting a great value on my TV package?

Harald Braun Former Aviat Networks CEO Interview

I had a chance to have a few conversations recently with former CEO of Aviat Networks Harald Braun (pictured) regarding his current activities. A former International Telecom CEO of the Year, he stepped down a few months ago as Chuck Kissner, who had been Aviat's chairman of the board, has taken his place as CEO.

Braun is currently acting as an adviser to the investment community and also consulting and is interested in new opportunities in a few spaces. I've followed him in his CEO role at Nokia Siemens Networks and Aviat Networks (formerly Harris Stratex) and because he has been a mover and shaker at some major companies I thought it interesting to pass along his areas of interest as he looks for the next big thing.

Avaya Flare Launch Live Blog

Avaya is launching a new interface called Flare. Rumors abound that the big deal here is it is a tablet. the reality is it is a UI which will run on tablets - including the one Avaya is launching today.

This is not designed to be an iPad killer but a Polycom killer instead as the tablet will lower the cost of executive telepresence drastically.

Avaya to Announce Tablet Tomorrow?

I meet with Avaya execs tomorrow and the speculation is the meeting involves the launch of a tablet. I mentioned Cisco is already announcing new apps for their tablet and it isn't even out yet. The tablet race is certainly on and I am looking forward to seeing what Avaya has to show. Now I am wondering if I should just leave the iPad at home.

iPad goes to China, Crooks Mine Facebook and ITEXPO Highlights

As the first week of the fall begins, there is a wealth of news to share such as China getting the iPad, Facebook status updates leading to burglaries, another high- level departure at Nokia and GoDaddy.com looking to sell itself for a billion dollars.

The pace of acquisitions hasn't slowed as of late - HP just announced it will acquire ArcSight to bolster its security offering and PAETEC will pick up Cavalier Telephone.

Perhaps the biggest news of all is Wal-Mart's entry into the MVNO space - they will be reselling T-Mobile's service.

If there is a common theme here - it's that technology continues to be full of opportunity as it becomes more common.

Cisco Quad Points to Communications Future

With Twitter and Facebook entrenching themselves as the defacto social destinations for consumers there is a more quiet race betwen enterprise technology companies to position themselves as the next information hub for collaboration in the corporate world. I recently spent a tremendous amount of time with Cisco's Murali Sitaram (pictured) the VP/GM of Cisco's Enterprise Platforms unit to learn more about Cisco's Quad initiative which ties together synchronous and asynchronous communications via a very social-networking friendly interface. The name Quad of course is a play on the campus quad which is often a meeting place at universities. And as you've no doubt guessed, the goal here is to create a virtual meeting place which has all the social benefits of the real-world coupled with the strengths of search, databases and real-time communications.

Google in Your Brain and ITEXPO Update

For some reason when I hear Sergey Brin wants Google to be the third half of my brain I feel a bit freaked out. Partially because they already know what everyone wants, desires - how often we search for our Exes, how often we check porn, etc. Then again, the next step seems to be logically implanting themselves in our heads so why am I surprised?

I just hope the third brain they put in me is out of Beta.

Then again, I could use some help from the Google guys when keeping track of all the excitement and new events surrounding ITEXPO.

How The Internet Can Reduce Global Theft

A while back I left a GPS unit in a rental car and when I returned it. I don't want to be offensive to any particular company so I will refer to the GPS company supplying my device as PomPom. When I realized I wasn't going to get it back I called the company because I remembered it was M2M-enabled and as such I paid a $10/month fee for Google search access and other online goodies.

The first thing I did was cancel my account but the second was ask that it not be enabled again if someone who takes the unit calls PomPom to start the service.

It has been an extremely exciting week again for tech news and moreover for me personally as I got a chance to open up my Sony Dash and it is a very cool addition to my desktop as it allows me to view my photos and take advantage of widgets of all kinds which among other thinks allow me to see the pandas at the San Diego Zoo. This handy gadget has a slew of communications, social networking and calendar features as well but for now, I just want to see the pandas.

The big news from yesterday of course was Steve Jobs onstage pushing a slew of new iPods and a rental-only model for Apple TV and a social network integrated into iTunes.
