What Verizon, Time Warner Think of Video Shift

As TV shifts to mobile phones and the web it is interesting to see Verizon, Time Warner Cable and Time Warner the entertainment company all think they will be OK as the evolution continues. Verizon thinks FiOS will help them differentiate through add-ons and services like 3D made possible by its higher capacity lines.

Time Warner Cable thinks they are shielded from any problems because they will be supplying broadband lines which will not be affected by the change. Time Warner – the entertainment company for its part thinks it’s in OK shape because it supplies content – regardless of distribution method.

Last May, I wrote about how TV disruption may happen more slowly than you think and while my past post deals with content providers who are in no hurry to give up billions of dollars of affiliate fees to stream content for free, we need to look at the situation from the perspective of the user.





RIM Enters Tablet Space with Playbook

At seven inches in size the new PlayBook tablet from RIM is a hybrid smartphone/tablet - smaller than the iPad but bigger than your favorite smartphone. With front and rear cameras and multitasking support the device leapfrogs the iPad in many ways. And let's not forget RIM's legendary enterprise support.

But RIM devices have never been as cool as Apple's but I would argue the back button on the device makes up for any of the challenges it has on the coolness front. Apple users understand how maddening it is to click on a link in an email, get a web browser then have to hit the home and email icons to get back to their original email.

Smart SMS the Future of Advertising?

It is no secret that technology is moving the world from being relaxed to real-time  and companies more than ever need to be able to turn on a  dime to be competitive. But while industries have increased their speed, offline advertising has stayed fairly stodgy.

For example, online advertisers - many news sites in fact, launched targeted ad campaigns the moment they learned about the BP oil spill but television and radio advertisers have to wait a good deal of time for new ads to be created and distributed.

I was reading an interesting article on TMCnet from Bob Emmerson about how SMS can not only help entrepreneurs in third-world countries but it can also be used to update video ads (via MMS) in taxis and other places such as elevators, restaurants and grocery check-out lines.

As mobile advertising becomes a larger area and the addressable market becomes not only the devices mentioned above but every cell phone in existence, the opportunity for technology to help advertisers increase sales rates becomes very real. For example, let's say hundreds of thousands of people descend upon a sports arena - at the moment the MVP of the game is announced, advertisers can beam out targeted ads congratulating the player and offering a  related discount.

Then there are ads which can be rolled out tied to news of the day.

In short, the targeted and intelligent use of technology can help increase advertising ROI while helping boost carrier revenue.











Metaswitch Forum 2010 Final Thoughts

I had a chance to eat breakfast this morning with Metaswitch CEO Kevin DeNuccio (pictured) and CTO Chris Mairs as well as some attendees and it was great to hear how much money is being spent by utilities to provide ultra-fast FTTH and smart grid applications. The good news is smart meters are slowly making their way to customer sites as the smart grid gets built out. In addition, DeNuccio told me after a time period with uncertainty the broadband stimulus dollars are starting to flow by the hundreds of millions to some of the carriers at the event.

The panel I spoke on Define Your Decade went pretty well from what I gathered - we talked about many of the future trends in the market such as cloud, social networking, UC and video.

Metaswitch Forum 2010 CTO Show

Federating and aggregation are key to carriers looking to compete in the new world was a message from the Metaswitch Forum this morning during the CTO Show presentation. Andy Randall, senior vice president of marketing and business development, sets the stage for CTO Chris Mairs who lays out a service provider blueprint for the next decade.



The audience was presented with a a colorful history of technology starting with the steam engine to the present and there was lots of talk about common day opportunities.



One recurring theme was Google as customer - carriers know the search engine is competitor but talk of working with them as a customer was frequent. Other discussions revolved around open APIs and and the company will participate in ecommerce and social networking companies through loose affiliations.



Transition to cloud will be a fundamental reconfiguration of our business and those adjacent to our own. Carriers will have to look to new ecosystems to replace current revenue streams.

ITEXPO is almost here - and there will be lots of news broken at this event based upon what my team tells me. In addition, some of the early news on the event is beginning to break and I hope to see you October 4-6, 2010 in Los Angeles.

Check out this article on Aculab's new products, AMS Server & ApplianX IP Gateway 2.2 to be released at the show. AMS Server gives developers more choices for creating telephony-based applications through its API support of both C# and Python, the preferred languages of many business-oriented application writers.

Genband Perspective 2010 Live Blog

We are the single largest private company in telecom.
Takeaways from this event:

  • We are innovating more than anyone else
  • We are growing
  • We are global

Class 4 and Class and 5 switches were not forklifted as fast as we thought - but we see an opportunity as switching in the core becomes a bigger deal for carriers.

We consolidated 2,000 COs for Verizon to 200 - same features and functions with 10x less central offices.

Traffic and policy management will become big area of growth for us as well as:

  • switching
  • networking
  • services

Other areas of focus are network tranformation, convergence and broadband.

We have already shipped 200,000,000 IP ports!

Company founded 1999 under name General Bandwidth. We still ship original G6 gateway - has evolved into VoIP.

Packet line gateway - allows you to take all traditional interfaces and connect it to a softswitch. We acquired legacy technology from Siemens. We developed relationships with TEMs in tier 2-3 market.

There still needs to be more consolidation.


In 2008 we acquired ReefPoint - put us in networking business - we were in switching business before this.

We spent the last 18 months working on S9 - SBC - and it has twice the density of anything on the market.

We acquired the gateway division of NSN.

All the media gateways NSN uses in fixed world are from Genband.

We also have relationships with Ericsson and Alcatel-Lucent.

September is here and so is conference season as I head to Genband Perspective in Texas and then Metaswitch Forum in Orlando, FL. Genband has been on a tear recently with acquisitions in numerous categories as well as organic growth. I am very interested to see how much progress the company has made since my last visit with them.

Metaswitch too has been growing quickly and they've made a few acquisitions as well.
