Microsoft is jumping into the music business and this is perhaps the biggest news of the day and possibly the week. Redmond is now offering ad supported music streaming and going up against Sirius XM, Pandora and Apple’s iTunes all at once. Boasting a 30-million strong library of songs, users can listen to playlists for free or download to own music across their TV, computers and smartphones. The ad-free version is $9.99 per month and includes access to music videos as well.

News from TeliaSonera, Stage2 Networks, Sidera Networks and More

September 13, 2012

There's been lots of activity in the TMC newsroom with many new guests coming to our Norwalk, CT studio to tell us what is new and exciting at their companies.

At around 170 million mobile subscribers, TeliaSonera is a major mobile carrier supplying much of Eastern Europe and Russia. Ivo Pascucci of TeliaSonera discussed how his area of the company company differentiates itself in the wholesale carrier market. Services include wave services, collocation and wholesale IP transit for carriers, content providers and gaming companies.

From there Joe Gillette from cloud communications provider and NY-based Stage2 Networks told me about the company’s thoughts on hosted voice services.

The iPhone 5 is Missing This Crucial Feature

September 12, 2012

I am just going to come out and say it – the iPhone 5 is yet another incremental upgrade to the iPhone line of products. Yes, Apple deserves great credit for making smartphones ubiquitous – they have turned mobile devices into web-surfing gadgets and so much more. But this doesn’t mean that Apple is innovating as fast as it could be.

In fact, TMC writers have discussed with me in private that Apple may be purposely holding back on their phone upgrades to ensure people will keep buying new devices on a regular cycle.

Apple to Launch a Pandora Competitor Next Week?

September 6, 2012

Apple is said to be getting into the music streaming business and there’s a chance we’ll hear more about it at the iPhone 5 launch event next week. As you may recall I surmised Apple would get into the home streaming market when it purchased LaLa in December of 2009. At the time I thought they would likely compete with Sonos and moreover mentioned there would be obvious implications for Pandora and the rest of the group.

Integration with iOS and possible tight links with iTunes were some of the areas of differentiation I pointed out we may see.

Clean up on Aisle Six; the Doctor Will See You Now

June 6, 2012

Look no further than to Wal-Mart when you need your next checkup, physical exam or other medical test. You see, cloud-based video collaboration tech has allowed Dr. Raj Shah of Telemed Ventures to set up shop in Wal-Mart and he plans on expanding his practice virtually to more of these stores to serve rural customers.

As the video above shows, a nurse takes some vital readings like weight, height, temperature, blood pressure and an EKG reading when appropriate.

Telemedicine has been around for many years but it is possible this new move in the US will help the concept gain more traction in the third-world as well.

Microsoft to Improve Multi-Monitor Productivity in Windows 8

May 21, 2012

If you use multiple monitors you have no doubt noticed it can get annoying to have to go back and forth between them to access specific functions like the Start menu. Well, it seems people at Microsoft too have noticed there is a productivity hit to having to move your mouse back and forth across potentially huge screens.

And a result Microsoft has released its multi-monitor improvements in its Windows 8 Release Preview and the good news is you can access essential Windows functions on all the monitors connected to a system. This is great news not only for users who have multiple monitors of the same size but for those who are accessing a display on a projector or a large screen TV.
