About eight years ago I held up DiamondWare as a shining example of what communications should be – HD, stereo and 3-D. Nortel later purchased DiamondWare and integrated it into its Project Chainsaw initiative which allowed avatar-based communications. Then these assets were sold to Avaya as part of the Nortel bankruptcy. I am fairly disappointed that this technology never went mainstream. People it seems aren’t yet ready for avatar-based communications or stereo conferencing for that matter.

So you can’t blame Avaya for not pushing this technology more forcefully as the market didn’t seem to bite.

Now there is an app which works on Android and iOS which enables much of what DiamondWare did and it’s called Voxeet. I tested it earlier and Tom Keating reviewed the service as a result. In-short, it is rough around the edges but allows stereo, 3-D conference calling with crystal-clear quality. And it’s free. What’s not to love?

Sure, they need to work out the kinks but to me this is how communications is meant to be – the way we naturally hear it, with both our ears and the ability to clearly discern where voices are coming. On a busy conference call, the capability to drag participants to the left or right and front and rear could make the difference between understanding what is said and getting confused.

For casual conversations this may not be a big deal but if you are having an M&A call, it helps to know whether the lawyer speaking is on your side or not.

Recently I had a chance to have an in-depth conversation with Avaya about the trends they see for 2012 in the communications space. In particular I spoke with George Humphrey a Director and Line of Business Owner at Avaya and Diane Royer, Senior Marketing Services Manager.

The trends below are at times augmented or enhanced with my thoughts.

1) Mobility raises the expectation of availability

Voice is morphing in the enterprise and becoming more consumer-driven and as a result everyone is connected at all times and moreover everyone wants immediate action. Consumers want to know right away if that widget on the website is compatible with European power or if the red color of the lamp online is closer to burgundy, beet or pomegranate.

Consumers are walking around with smartphones today that are the computing equivalent of supercomputers of a few decades back. This means we not only can do anything anywhere from a voice and data perspective, we will need to in order to maintain our customers and jobs. This is certainly not a new trend – a huge jump in being able to work around the clock took place in the nineties when voicemail allowed executives, salespeople and others to check messages without being in the office. BlackBerrys continued this trend and the web and e-mail turbocharged it and today’s powerful devices, WiFi and 3G/4G networks have supercharged the trend.

2) Contact centers test the value of voice

More companies will calculate where voice communications fit into their value stream, from pure cost to revenue generation. This is straight from Avaya - I didn’t get into this one as I thought some of the other bullets were more interesting.

3) Contextual data spans the last mile of personal productivity

For those of you were around during the 1980s in the call center space, you may recall the call centers who could invest millions of dollars were able to connect their Rockwell ACDs to their IBM mainframes to allow a database dip when the phone call information appeared via ANI and this in turn allowed a screen pop on the agents desk when they answered a phone call. What could be “popped” depended upon what was in the database but the idea here is we can do “screen pops squared” today because a call can come in and we can leverage CRM repositories, enterprise search tools, social networks, blogs, wikis and you name it. It is really just a matter of organizing it all. The idea is the more information agents have, the better they can serve their customers and in turn the more loyal the customers will be, resulting in higher ARPU and stickiness to borrow some terms from the wireless space.

4) Businesses advance from social media to social business

The idea here is we are about to cross the chasm of social adoption in companies – the social company or social enterprise is around the corner which in tech adoption turns will likely take 5-10 years. Interestingly at a recent conference I attended one vendor told me about a financial company which installed a state-of-the-art social platform for their company to use. Problem was the majority of the company was made up stock brokers who were – let me put this delicately, closer to retirement than college. Basically the old folks couldn’t figure out the newfangled pokes, circles and the like. Who says I have to be diplomatic all the time? :-)

Point being once again, this will be a journey, not a destination we reach in the next few years. Are we there yet? No. Quit your whining and be patient. :-)

5) Social media and customer care enter into an arranged marriage

My family came to this country from one in which arranged marriages were the norm. Let’s just say you didn’t necessarily fall in love you were I suppose “told” to love. Keep that in mind when you integrate your contact center and social strategies as customers have to feel like the two are seamless and agents need to be able to navigate the Venus of the Contact center and the Mars of social with aplomb. Just keep in mind, you really need to get it right the first time as there is no prenup I am aware of.

The rest of these are straight from Avaya – stay tuned for more comments from me after number 12:

6) The SIP is raised again

early adopters have completed implementation of, and captured initial ROI from, SIP-enabled infrastructure; now they’ll begin deploying SIP-enabled applications to gain the next level of value.

7) Social interactions expose customer care’s flaws

Businesses can’t fake who they are in a “social” setting, because social interactions ultimately expose “the real you.” Some businesses will discover they aren’t portraying an image they prefer, so they’ll be compelled to reinvent what customer centricity is all about.

8) IT support staffs converge, part two

In many companies, voice and data support teams converged with the advent of Internet Protocol (IP) telephony; with the deployment of unified communications applications, more companies will blend their applications teams as well.

9) Continuous connectivity drives communications support services

Communications support services increasingly will involve proactive problem resolution via secure access links and live interaction when necessary via innovative Web environments.

10) “True” UC apps proliferate

IT departments will be compelled by business units and enterprise users to adopt more user-centric applications and devices.

11) UC managed services/outsourcing facilitates alignment between IT and business units

As business unit demands increase at an even faster clip, more IT departments will adopt managed services/outsourcing business models to keep pace. IT groups that resist will continue to struggle.

12) Clients take control of managed services

As IT departments better understand industry best practices around infrastructure management, they will become more discriminating about the services they purchase, their expectations for transparency into those services, and how they hold service providers accountable.

-----

A few important points - on number eight, the company believes there also needs to be an evolution in IT meaning the director of infotech for the call center needs to understand data, UC, UC apps and be more savvy about MSP-based solutions. And on number ten, the concept here isn’t CEBP or Communications Enabled Business Processes it is more about BYOD – so think mobility.

I also asked the company how these trends are or aren’t manifesting themselves into sales and the response was more clients are seeing true value in UC and app-centric communications. Moreover, they are looking to more creative ways to procure solutions meaning the manufacturer becomes the systems integrator and moreover they are looking for more MSP-based delivery models.

I also asked about Avaya’s Flare collaboration environment which the company rolled out a short while back and they said it is available on the iPad – I downloaded it and it is pretty slick. In the future we can expect it to become video-enabled on this platform and Flare for Android and PC are coming in the spring of 2012.

I also asked about the company’s A175 tablet and didn’t get the sense this device is lighting the world on fire. Let’s put it this way – I knew it was tough to compete with the iPad at $500 when the A175 costs about $2,000. Now there is an Amazon Kindle Fire priced at $200. Believe me there is no comparison between the capabilities of the A175 and these other devices as it is multimedia-enabled and is really a super-powerful device for road warriors. It’s just that Avaya doesn’t have the appeal or consumer electronics name of an Apple or Amazon and this presents a challenge.

Another interesting point is that customers have seen cloud advertised so often they are interested in these types of solutions but they don’t necessarily need their system to be in the cloud. In other words it can be a solution which is MSP-based and OPEX oriented. In other words Avaya is trying to listen to customer needs and cut through the catchy cloud computing and cloud communications buzzwords to determine how they can solve their customer’s needs.

You can also see Avaya’s original thoughts on these trends if you are interested in seeing them without my added perspective.

You can see Avaya live as part of TMC’s ITEXPO where they have consistently been running their Technology on Tap events. It will take place Tuesday, January 31, 2012 from 5-10 pm EST in Miami Florida at the Miami Beach Convention Center (not the typical hotel setting you may be used to). Moreover the keynote will be given by the Author of Cloud Computing for Dummies, Judith Hurwitz. The company kindly requests you register in advance, thank you.

And surprise, most people will pay for apps

Games, weather and social networking apps are where people are spending a tremendous amount of their time followed by mapping, news, music and entertainment. These are the results of a new survey from Nielsen which asks what apps people used in the last 30 days. iPhone users who are mobile gamers play about 30 minutes per day on average or 14.7 hours per month while Android users play 9.3 hours per month.

Nielsen supplied chart of apps which smartphone users have downloaded in the last 30 days

While we see mega deals in the video game world for titles like Angry Birds and social companies like Zynga preparing for multi-billion dollar IPOs - let's keep in mind part of the reason for this is that everyone it seems will pay for games on their phones. Consider in fact Nielsen found 93 percent of app downloaders are willing to pay for the games they play. In contrast, only 76 percent of downloaders are willing to pay for news apps. This is a 22% increase and in a terrible economic environment. If the economy was better the number would likely be close to 100%!

What is fascinating however is that iOS users will spend twice as much time playing games as the average mobile gamer - part of the reason of course is feature phone and RIM users have less attractive platforms for gaming.

Another interesting tidbit is communications in the form of IM and VoIP are used about 20% of the time and sadly, education/learning is the second to last category at 11%.

While 93% of users would pay for game apps only 76% would pay for news apps. Navigation apps scored 84% and this makes sense as the cost of such apps can be deducted because users won't need a separate GPS unit.

The takeaway here is the app economy is alive and well and growing fast.

Stuxnet is Victory at Entebbe 2.0

The Stuxnet worm alleged to be the work of Israel and the US was designed to target and disable Iranian centrifuges by increasing their speeds to dangerous levels while reporting to operators that all was well. The latest report from the New York Times shows this worm has also hit five industrial sites in the land of Ahmadinejad.

It’s no secret most of the world does not want Iran to get nuclear weapons and the best weapon being used to deter the country’s nuclear program was sanctions and if they are working it would be tough to know it as the country are prospering greatly as the price of oil is much higher than what Iran has budgeted.

So electronic warfare is a nice and neat way to disable a portion of the country’s operations without the need to go to war, risk lives, etc.

Because of the nature of this attack some predict the Iranian nuclear program has been set back by two years, making this attack historic in its ingenuity. It is really Victory at Entebbe 2.0. As you may recall, Operation Entebbe was a daring hostage rescue mission pulled off by the Israel Defense Forces in 1976.

Cyberattacks are not new by any means but the level of sophistication and damage created by this attack make it something bad guys everywhere will be trying to emulate. And this means as we interconnect more systems from smart grids to smart homes… From automobiles to transit systems and full cities, we need to understand the stakes are higher than ever. Rogue countries and terrorist organizations have a new standard to try to beat and it is not out of the question to see countries engaging in more frequent cyberwars in the future. This could be in conjunction with conventional wars like when Russia and Georgia had their recent conflict or full out cyberwars like Stuxnet or when Russia targeted Estonian web servers with DDoS attacks.

For the tech industry this means massive new budgets will be allocated to not only defending against such attacks but developing ingenious new ways of disabling enemies.

And while cyberwar sounds less ominous than having bombs dropped on your head, there is no telling what sorts of damage citizens of the future will be facing if cyberterrorism and cyberwar escalates.

I decided to risk my life to take the picture above while driving - I could have pulled over but hey, I was late for my first meeting and I would do just about anything for you, my faithful reader. Attention law enforcement professionals - some elements of this blog post may have been overly sensationalized in order to provide dramatic effect.

But getting back to Connecticut where TMC is based - one coworker who lives in Danbury, CT said it was -11 degrees when she left her house this morning. And that's nothing. If you can believe it... CBS News reports temperatures with wind chill hit as cold as -50 degrees F!

BTW, in AP biology back in high school we learned that -40F is the same temperature as -40C - this little bit of trivia courtesy of Mrs. Beers my 11th grade teacher. Hope I spelled her name right.

Oh, but back to the point of this meandering post... It is freezing out. There is one show in Miami next week where you can go to network with those who matter in the world of tech and telecom. Almost forgot to mention it is called ITEXPO East 2011. Every important topic is to be discussed from super WiFi to SIP to open source to virtualization and cloud computing. It is all there - in Miami under a single roof where you will also get to hear keynotes from former FCC Chairman Kevin Martin as well as executives from BT, Adobe, Aculab, GENBAND and Digium - the creators of Asterisk. Its the only industry event with a networking party at Mangos, one of the hottest spots on South Beach. Yes, there are other places to network as well.

So I hope to see you there and I look forward to greeting you in person.

Here is the ITEXPO show site, collocated events, free workshops, exhibitor list and giveaways you can win such as a new Jeep.
Stacey Higginbotham points out $25/MB is a tremendous amount of revenue and a great reason for carriers to love M2M. Another reason carriers love it has to do with the fact that that the old models of ARPU, churn and device subsidies go out the window. Sprint's Wayne Ward explained this to me in October of 2009 and went on to say you don't even need to deal with customers regarding rates as the machines do all the talking.

Finally, he explained you can even use your older networks as M2M apps typically do not require tremendous speed or throughput.

Obviously these are some of the reasons why carriers are excited about the M2M market - not to mention market projections of 2.1 billion M2M connections in ten years. This is up from 61 million today.

Steve Hilton Principal Analyst at Analysis Mason says, "With a year-on-year growth rate of between 36% and 52%, M2M seeks to be one of the fastest-growing connectivity sectors in the next decade."

All this M2M talk reminds me of the upcoming M2M Evolution conference in Miami in two weeks. The official conference program is now available and contained in this press release excerpt below for your viewing pleasure.

For those of you who attended the ITEXPO and related events last year in Miami, you remember it was a very strong show with great attendance. The conference usually draws from all over the world – especially Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, the Central and Eastern US and of course Canada.

The even better news about this upcoming event Feb 2-4, 2011 at the Miami Beach Convention center is the numbers are trending much better than last year. My marketing team just sent over the comparable stats and here they are:

Overall attendance up 52% over same time last year

Paid conference attendance up 54% over same time last year

Loews hotel block up 31% over last year

The event has certainly grown and there are currently 13 collocated events as follows. We believe there is no finer or more complete place to learn about the important technologies which will enhance your career and bottom line.

I hope to see you there and thanks to all my readers who have decided to register and/or sponsor attend the event.

I recently spent a tremendous amount of time with Cisco's Murali Sitaram (pictured) the VP/GM of Cisco's Enterprise Platforms unit to learn more about Cisco's Quad initiative which ties together synchronous and asynchronous communications via a very social-networking friendly interface. The name Quad of course is a play on the campus quad which is often a meeting place at universities. And as you've no doubt guessed, the goal here is to create a virtual meeting place which has all the social benefits of the real-world coupled with the strengths of search, databases and real-time communications.

Cisco Quad aims to unify synchronous and asynchronous communications

At the moment Quad is targeted at enterprises with 100,000 users and up and in the future we can expect a cloud-based Quad solution provided by service providers for smaller companies to use.

There are a few very real business reasons to seriously consider enterprise social networking and without a doubt providing a familiar workspace for the "Facebook generation" is one. Beyond that it is apparent to me after a brief demo of Quad that enterprise social networks can become a living and breathing repository of knowledge and business process. The productivity benefits of being able to research past mistakes in excruciating detail to avoid repeating them cannot be underestimated.

And of course you can analyze your past successes as well and hopefully repeat them across workgroups.

Cisco supplied some screen shots and the text in the green boxes is from them. I deemed these descriptions useful and devoid of excess marketing spin so I left them in. Click on any image below to enlarge.

One other reason for adopting a business-oriented social network platform is the retirement of the baby boomer generation - a full 10,000 (PDF) baby boomers per month will be eligible for retirement as of January 2011. The question companies need to ask themselves is how do they keep the knowledge and expertise of these retirees in a form which can be leveraged in the future?

Cisco hasn't directly acquired the technology behind Quad but it has a string of dozens of acquisitions which amplify the usefulness of the new service and Sitaram told me they are building an architectural pillar which chases after the collaboration market estimated to be worth $38B in 2012.

To me, Quad seems like the interface of an iPad - simple on the outside yet infinitely complex behind the scenes. When using it you get the sense you are using a social network which Apple had a small part in designing but unlike many Apple and even traditional Cisco solutions there seems to be a more open ecosystem approach to Quad than you might expect.

Now I know what you're thinking and you are absolutely correct. How many companies have tried to launch the next big thing in communications and failed. Perhaps the biggest recent example of failure is Google Wave which was supposed to transform our communications in a similar manner to how Google transformed our searches. We expected this fusion of social networking and email to take the world by storm and it just didn't. Perhaps it was the confusing UI or perhaps it was the complexity of it all.

I asked Sitaram his thoughts on the failure of Wave and he said that while it tried to enhance e-mail, Quad is trying to change the way people work. He went on to say Wave was one-dimensional and that in order to be successful there needs to be cultural and process change. He said companies need to tear down their intranets and rate employees based on their participation. He further mentioned the transition is a 3-5 year process.

Cisco has experience in using this approach as the company is transitioning its intranet to Quad over the next 2-3 quarters. As you may recall the company also rolled out IP telephony internally fairly early - around eight years ago, as a proof of concept for its customers. This is a smart move by the networking giant and it further allowed Sitaram to show me the features of the system via his own account and he was able to inject the passion and enthusiasm which any proud parent would display when doing a demo.

It seems like a good time to relay some of the things Quad can do for an enterprise. First off it allows a user to update their microblog status like Twitter for the enterprise provider Yammer. There is also Twitter integration and by selecting a checkbox you can enable your status to be broadcast across the open web. Moreover there is a personalized dashboard which can contain custom apps and the calendar seamlessly integrates with Microsoft Outlook while presence integrates with Microsoft OCS (Tom Keating has a scoop this product has been renamed Microsoft Lync). Moreover there is integration with SharePoint and Microsoft FAST Search Server.

I mentioned the open ecosystem above and Sitaram reinforced the point by mentioning Cisco's goal is to leverage the tools companies have but make them better. For example you can see photos of people coming to your meetings and a click of the mouse allows you to IM via Webex or call them. This by the way is where the asynchronous world becomes synchronous as video and audio communication is seamlessly built into the system meaning you can think of Quad as your corporate Facebook and Skype rolled into one. This is an oversimplification but it gives you a good idea of how Quad can change communications for the better.

Other important features include a visual voicemail widget, RSS feeds and iGoogle support. As you might expect you can list your interests and further view the reporting structure of others. Moreover you can (depending on privacy settings, etc) view the WebEx, telepresence meetings and shared documents of others.

Moreover there is community support allowing conversations to take place on various topics. These communities can be open, direct-invite or hidden - as you would likely want to do when dealing with a confidential topic like an acquisition or merger. You can further allow partners and contractors into Quad and of course permissions play a crucial role in allowing them access to just the information they require. Furthermore, the system supports tags and as a result allows a tag cloud to be built and searched upon. This could come in handy if you are looking for a PowerPoint on virtualization security which is recent.

How Cisco views Quad fitting into the enterprise

Information as you can imagine is not just pulled from the system - you can build default lists when sharing - allowing you to quickly ensure the appropriate people are kept up to speed.

It goes without saying but is important enough to specify the system can be the centerpiece of your internal video distribution as well like a corporate YouTube.

In terms of security - the solution currently only works via VPN - or within the firewall and all you need is a browser - no local applications need to be installed.

One important question I had was what category Quad fits in and I was told Quad could be considered enterprise social software but is broader and crosses over into enterprise content management, search and unified communications.

I next asked how Quad competes with SharePoint, the Google Search Appliance and Salesforce.com's Chatter. The response was that none of these systems include real-time collaboration - the ability to immediately initiate a real-time collaboration. Murali explained that SharePoint is a toolset while Quad is an out-of-the-box solution. Moreover, he added that Cisco has embedded policy and security into their system - in-part thanks to their acquisition of Securant a company focusing on the entitlement management space.

He went on to say the system includes semantic search which of course pits them against Google in the enterprise space. Other benefits of Quad over the competition according to Sitaram include allowing organizations better control of their data - a single copy of documents with versioning and comments preserved. Moreover, they are working on iPad and iPhone apps as well which they say Microsoft is less likely to do. He went on to say, "Cisco wants to be an any to any company."

A final differentiator was that Quad will be one of the first apps on the new Cius tablet.

I further asked why there is no project management in Quad and he said this is a direction the company would like to go in. This led to a discussion of the included open APIs which allows a company to tailor the system to vertical markets such as insurance.

I asked how Quad compares to wikis and he said that one of the benefits of Quad is the ease in which you can find content.

I also asked about the perception of Facebook being a time drainer - after all, even actress Betty White thinks this about Facebook. This one was diffused quickly as Sitaram explained all the content in Quad is work-related.

I next asked if people will jump off FaceBook and Twitter and the response was that people will go where their work lives and they will further need to "Quad" to find documents and this will allow them to work faster and more efficiently as they will now have more rapid access to documents.

I also asked if Cisco uses Yammer and was told they do and it will be replaced by Quad - he further went on to say this about the enterprise microblog service - information once it scrolls off the screen is useless. It is worth mentioning Yammer does have a search feature and is very similar to Twitter in most respects.

From there we went into a discussion of productivity as I asked about how you can prove ROI with such a system. This question occurred to me as Sitaram explained a bit earlier that a county in the UK they are working with has deployed Quad as part of a solution which saves 50 million pounds annually. One reason the Cisco solution was deployed had to do with allowing workers who were once in offices to work from home while feeling a sense of community.

As many cities, counties and countries find themselves with massive amounts of debt they may never be able to pay back, one has to wonder if selling off real-estate and using collaboration is the smartest way global governments can streamline themselves without implementing ever-more suffocating taxes on the most productive elements of their societies.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the meeting was learning how passionate Sitaram is about Quad. He truly believes its what's next with IP communications. He exclaimed, "This is what sits on top of it!"

We are confronted with new paradigms and technologies on a monthly basis it seems and some become hugely successful and others like virtual worlds utilizing avatars gain rapid momentum and then fade.

After seeing Quad in action it is obvious that a system like this is the future of collaboration and communications. I don't see email going away in the foreseeable future but we have seen that collaboration technologies like web conferencing, IM/presence, SharePoint,Facebook, Yammer and Twitter are flourishing. Doesn't it make perfect sense that there needs to a be a single data store and set of access policies for all collaboration information which is accessible by a clean and uncluttered web-based GUI? Of course.

I am bullish on the prospects of Quad but I am also cautious as predicting time frames for technological leaps which require user behavior to change as this is an easy way to destroy a writer's credibility. Moreover, what is there to stop Google, Salesforce.com, Microsoft, Facebook and/or Twitter from evolving to target Quad? And then there is Oracle, IBM and HP - don't expect them to sit down and watch a lucrative new market get taken away by another company. And if competition heats up will it splinter the market causing it to slow down or speed up? So I will end by stating simply a collaboration solution like Quad is likely the future of enterprise communications and for now Cisco seems to be even better positioned to differentiate itself in global enterprises and soon SMBs.

Today is the last day to save hundreds or thousands on registration

We have been seeing an incredible stream of registrations for ITEXPO and related events and as is always the case, my team has done its absolute best to make this show better than ever. At TMC we take education extremely seriously and in a trade show market where companies regularly fold up and go away, we are proud to be putting on industry-leading events for 24 years.

What I have personally learned over the years is if you provide the best education to your customers with a wide enough array of topics, your attendees walk away very happy. The challenge is to be broad enough while allowing for a laser-like focus on the important topics of the day.

What can you learn about at ITEXPO? Here is just some of the awesome content we have assembled under one roof and at one time:

IP communications

Unified Communications (UC)

M2M (Machine to Machine)

Mobile App Development

Here are even more happenings.

And yes, we are still raffling off a car to one lucky attendee (details forthcoming) who is present at the show and yes the exhibit hall is free if you book in advance.

Please be aware that airfares and potentially hotel rates will be higher than you expect this year so you want to book your travel and hotel immediately to not waste money.

I personally know from decades of experience that this conference is the only one where you can learn virtually everything you need to in communications and technology and this one trip will allow you to stay on top of everything you need to in the market. I wouldn't be caught dead making a purchase in tech or telecom without attending this event or one very similar to it.

Having said that we are very proud to point out the combination of participating companies at ITEXPO and collocated events has not been duplicated anywhere and you can only meet with them at ITEXPO this October 4-6, 2010 in Los Angeles. I truly hope to see you there.

Many of you in the communications and technology spaces already know Andy Abramson as he is a well-known and influential blogger. But what you may not realize about Andy's company Comunicano is it is a major player in the world of influencer relations. By capitalizing on a strategy which Andy describes as the boulevard of communications, his company works with his clients to ensure their news turns into stories which are told and retold throughout the web and other media outlets.

As you can see from the inverted pyramid above, Comunicano segments the disparate audiences necessary to push a product along the influencer road to ultimately convince followers to purchase. It all starts with taste makers who influence trendsetters who in turn influence opinion leaders and so on.

Leveraging the combined power of the BAM community which represents bloggers, analysts and media, Andy explains in the video below how the goal is to get a product and/or company to have its buzz-level heated up as if it was in a pressure cooker of influence. As more heat is added to the system, an eventual rapid boil of influence takes place for the client.

In the old days a PR firm handled just public relations which meant cranking out press releases and scheduling meetings and trying to convince editors to write stories. It is interesting to see today that PR firms who are successful have morphed into new areas such as social media, SEO and content creation. Comunicano has taken these ideas and others and combined them in a way I haven't seen other firms successfully deploy. Moreover they have morphed themselves into a new segment of the market which didn't exist. As an added bonus, Andy is so technically savvy; he actually helps his clients do a final test on products and services before they are rolled out. As the PR and marketing world have evolved and continue to do so, the most savvy marketers and CXOs should be paying attention to what this company is doing as Abramson takes the complex concept of influencing people across channels and disciplines and is able to distill it down to a few logical concepts and sound bites which when put into practice are working well for his clients.

Next Week, my team and I will be hosting meetings in San Jose where the technology and communications markets will have unprecedented access to TMC editors and the ability to tell their story in TMC's video newsroom. Since I blogged about the opportunity a while back we have already scheduled over 60 meetings. We are subsequently flying more of our team out to the west coast to handle the meetings. The good news is there is still some more space left for meetings now that we have decided to send more resources cross-country from our headquarters in Connecticut.

Moreoever, this event now has networking potential meaning you will not only meet editors but others in the industry. Based on past experience there will be solid networking taking place.
