Boingo, GigSky, XCom: Why my Europe Connectivity was Awesome

April 23, 2014

A while back, I had a chance to go to MWC (news and analysis) in Barcelona, Spain and like many of you who travel internationally, I was concerned about my cellular bill as I enjoy the relative generosity of multigigabyte 4G data plans in the US. In Europe however the costs can grow quickly. When headed overseas, Verizon charges $25 per 100 MB of data. As many US devices are locked, it becomes a hassle to bypass such restrictions with multiple devices and a bevy of SIM cards.

March 18, 2014

ShoreTel Touts Low TCO and Cloud/Premise Integration

I just had a chance to meet with Mark Roberts, CMO of ShoreTel to a get a handle on what the company has been up to lately. He has been at Polycom and Mitel in the past and is just embarking on his fourth month in his new role but seems very excited to be where he is. This is in-part because he beleives the ShoreTel roadmap is the correct one to navigate the ever-evolving communications market.

Sennheiser Rounds Out Portfolio

March 17, 2014

The UC space is alive and well even as it moves from the customer premise to the cloud. To learn more about the market I had a conversation with William Whearty (pictured), VP Sales & Product Marketing at Sennheiser where he told me their 70-year history of making microphones and headphones shows we know how to reproduce sound.

Now, the company is making an aggressive push into various segments of the UC market and is working to add certifications.

Barry O'Sullivan joins Altocloud to Boost Marketing & Call Center Integration

March 12, 2014

“Marketing is eating sales,” said Barry O’Sullivan the new CEO of Altocloud, a company dedicated to producing solutions which can be used to create happier customers. Simply stated they have an analytics platform which integrates your contact center and marketing automation software in order to allow instant insight on what your customers are doing and more importantly, helping them receive increasingly personalized experiences with smarter interactions and faster resolution.

And having Barry on board carries a great deal of importance. He not only was a VP/GM at Nortel when the company was doing well, he also spent 11 years at Cisco, most recently as SVP & GM UC & VoIP.

Why I'm Neutral on the Comcast, Time Warner Cable Deal

February 14, 2014

There has been lots of controversy over the merging of two of the largest cable companies Comcast and Time Warner Cable. Concerns range from fear of a monopoly to worse customer service to higher fees and data caps. Jim Edwards at Business Insider for example says you will get screwed if the merger goes through.

Consumers Union thinks if the merger happens, prices will increase and service will suffer.

Why You Should Be Bullish on Technology

January 22, 2014

In the past, the price of just about everything increased over time but thanks to technology, many products and services are getting progressively cheaper and in many cases, better. In the 1980s, you could have paid 25 cents per-minute for a domestic long-distance call and dollars per-minute for international long-distance. Not only has the price of a long-distance call dramatically decreased over time, today, IP communications assigns no per-minute cost to communicate. In fact, you can now use Skype to set up a free baby monitor a continent away with HD quality video and audio which puts the phone company's quality to shame.

ZipWhip: What if Every Phone Number Could Text?

November 12, 2013

Back in 2005, yes, 2005 I wondered when WiFi phones would allow text messaging – I suggested there was an opportunity for companies to take advantage of the merging of the VoIP and consumer electronics spaces. Of course eight years later the world is a different place. The iPhone was two years from being introduced back then, Blackberry was in the early days of becoming king of the smartphone market and Microsoft and Nokia were strong players. Now Apple and Google are dominant and the others mentioned above are scrambling.

NFV Roadmaps Are Affecting Carrier Purchases Now

October 12, 2013

The view from Asia

I had the chance to catch up with a top exec at a major Asian telecom equipment manufacturer and he told me customers are asking for NFV and they are busy working with a number of carriers in Europe to provide suitable solutions. This exec thinks that NFV will have the greatest impact in the gateway space. He went on to say he doesn’t believe the technology will have as much impact beyond the gateway because interoperability may become a problem – meaning whose throat is there to choke if things don’t work properly?
