We’ll here about progress with the Fring Alliance, Nuvia cloud UC as well as Kandy proof points.

There will be lots of discussion regarding network modernization.

Extreme Networks Puts the SDN in Skype for Business

May 13, 2015

As Skype for Business continues to gain traction in the enterprise – regardless of how many name changes Microsoft’s UC solution has gone through, the one constant is the need for bandwidth on corporate networks to handle the increased load of voice and video calls. For this reason, Extreme Networks has been focusing on helping customers set up software-defined networks allowing for bandwidth to be requested and granted on-demand in order to ensure communications has the required bandwidth it needs via OpenDaylight integration.

The Extreme Networks OneController... An Open, Standards-Based SDN Controller Providing Simple, Fast, and Smart Automation and Orchestration

In addition, at Interop 2015, Extreme touted a bunch of SDN enhancements it has made including:

  • Group Based Policy - Integrates Extreme Networks' NetSight management application with OpenDaylight Group-Based Policy (GBP) to deploy consistent network policies across a multivendor network.
  • SDN Applications Store - Offers an online repository of paid and free apps for customers and technology solution partners' Software Defined Networks.
  • SDN Developer Portal - Provides third-party developers of SDN applications with the necessary information needed for developing, submitting and managing their applications in the Extreme Networks app store.

At the show I met with a number of people from the company including: Markus Nispel, Vice President Solutions Architecture and Innovation, John Hanahan, VP Product Management and Marketing and Derek Granath, Senior Director Product Management and they seemed quite enthused about recent wins such as a 32-school system in the town of Enfield, Connecticut and University of New England in Australia.

Revolabs Pushing Audio Quality Boundaries in Conferencing

May 8, 2015

A typical telephone call these days still relies on quality limitations of compression and filtering designed in the 1960s! Before VoIP, the percentage of such calls would have been 100. For a short time thereafter, VoIP calls may have even sounded worse in some cases than the PSTN – the 1960s technology I referenced.

Fast forward to about 20 years after VoIP was launched and we live in a world of HD voice potential.

Fring Alliance Aims to Become Carrier VoIP Cooperative

April 3, 2015

Fring may be one of the more interesting stories in the telecom space. The company launched one of the first VoIP apps I used on the iPhone – if not the first. They then sold to GENBAND some years later to be the core enabler of a hosted VoIP platform carriers could purchase from GENBAND and resell to their customers. In short, a simple cloud-based white-label way to compete with OTT without massive investment.

AT&T Partner Exchange Adds Features to Gain SMB Share

March 27, 2015

Ma Bell knows it's all about ecosystem

Companies rare really focusing on their solution partners (SP) – especially when looking to court small to medium business customers as the SP owns the relationship. As reported by Tara Seals on TMCnet recently, Nimble Storage, AT&T, HP, Equinix, NTT America and others are deploying similar strategies to court this market.

In fact, two years ago, AT&T Partner Solutions decided it wanted to attract more customers with up to 20,000 employees and as a result, they decided they would change the way they do businesses. In a recent meeting, Brooks McCorcle, president of the division says they now act more like a Silicon Valley start-up.

While it isn't uncommon for companies to become more nimble in the face of growing competition, it is impressive to see any division of an established carrier making such a claim.

Will YipTV do to TV What Vonage did to Voice Calls?

March 11, 2015

The VoIP market literally revolutionized the way communications worked – allowing among-other-things, a company to provide over-the-top services which were decoupled from the phone company. For the first time you could go out and buy broadband from one company and phone service from another. The poster-child for this movement in the US had to be Vonage, and the company did a great deal for the fledgling VoIP market at the time. Thanks to Vonage, AT&T launched a competitive service called CallVantage out of fear.

Acision Fights Creative Destruction with Innovation at #MWC15

March 4, 2015

At Mobile World Congress (MWC) in 2015 Mark Zuckerberg gave a keynote speech for the second year in a row and to me it really seemed like keeping your friends close and your enemies closer. After all, WhatsApp and Facebook are responsible for billions of lost dollars in messaging revenue for global wireless carriers.

I couldn’t help but think of this as I met with Acision yesterday. Some years back I was in their corporate offices in Texas where they told me the threat from advertising based tech models to SMS was unsustainable.

TCS Shows Telemedicine Improvements and more at #MWC15

March 2, 2015

TCS had a wealth of interesting news at MWC - probably the most interesting was their VirtuMedix solution which is a HIPAA compliant virtual telemedicine solution allowing doctors and patients to securely communicate in order to minimize the need for in-person visits. In a live demo they showed me how a patient could get added to a queue after paying a fee for service and the doctor could then choose to take the audio or video call. From that point they communicate via WebRTC and can share photos if needed, of a rash for example.

The doctor has a fully integrated portal which links to billing and prescription systems and patients for their part get help entering their malady as the system is prepopulate with popular ailments.

In all, this is a very slick solution - they even have an integrated refund which can be sent to a patient if it is deemed they are better off going to the emergency room after all.

TCS is also working on connected car solutions - helping to harden the solutions to prevent buffer overruns and other issues which could be exploited by hackers. Penetration testing via range checks is one of the way they do this.

How exactly is the WebRTC Revolution Different than VoIP?

February 11, 2015

There are many parallels between the disruption being caused by WebRTC and what happened in VoIP. During the IP telephony days, Dialogic was one of the key infrastructure providers to carriers, call centers and companies of all sizes. Likewise in WebRTC, Dialogic is playing an interconnecting role and the company helps WebRTC scale and moreover provides the tools to add value to web communications.

The reason I bring this is up is because Jim Machi of Dialogic gave a keynote at WebRTC Expo in San Jose last year which you may have missed.
